Summary: Can't Put Pearson DOWN! Gripping !
Review: The latest in the Lou Boldt series grabs you with the attack on a female detective during the blue flu that is running rampant in Seattle. Is it personal, a reminder from a fellow officer because she is not joining the sick out? Or part of the series of violent burgularies on singles that is puzzling the scant forces still on the job trying to cover all the bases? Boldt is everywhere working with rookies who do not know how to handle crime scenes, to fellow officers who seem to be standing in the way of justice. Again Pearsons cast of characters are wonderful. Highly recommend.

Summary: MIDDLE OF NOWHERE ABRIDGED AUDIO BOOK
Review: RIDLEY WRITE. DON'T READ! RIDLEY PEARSON IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS. HAVING LISTENED TO MANY OF HIS BOOKS, I PREFER AUDIO SINCE I AM ON THE ROAD ALOT AND DON'T FIND THE TIME TO READ LIKE I USED TO. HE IS CONCISE, CREATIVE, SPELLBINDING, AND KEEPS YOU GUESSING AT EVERY TURN. HE IS A TRUE MASTER OF HIS CRAFT! YESTERDAY I RECEIVED "MIDDLE OF NOWHERE" AND LOOKED FORWARD TO HEARING A BOOK WHICH HAD RECEIVED GREAT REVIEWS AND SHOULD BE ON THE BEST-SELLER LIST. I SLIPPED IT INTO MAY CAR'S CASSETTE PLAYER AND WITHIN 20 MINUTES HAD NEVER BEEN SO DISAPPOINTED WITH AN AUDIO BOOK. RIDLEY WAS NARRATING HIS OWN BOOK...AND JUST BECAUSE HE IS A SUPERB WRITER...DOES NOT MEAN HE CAN NARRATE! WHY DO AUTHORS DO THIS? HE WAS BORING, LIFELESS, HAD NO ENTHUSIASM IN HIS VOICE, AND QUITE FRANKLY I THINK MY SIX YEAR- OLD SON COULD HAVE DONE AS WELL. I HAVE MANAGED TO PUT UP WITH A FEW POORLY READ AUDIO BOOKS, BUT NOT THIS ONE. TO DATE THERE I HAVE LISTENED TO ONLY TWO AUTHORS WHO DO AN EXCELLENT JOB OF NARRATING THEIR OWN AUDIO BOOKS...JOHN LECARRE AND LAWRENCE BLOCK (TRULY THE PERFECT BERNIE THE BURGLAR.) I USUALLY SHARE MY AUDIO BOOKS WITH MY PUBLISHER BUT THIS TIME I WILL NOT BECAUSE I AM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE QUALITY. IF I CAN FIND OUT WHO NARRATES THE UNABRIDGED VERSION, HOPEFULLY NOT RIDLEY, I WILL PURCHASE IT AND HIDE THIS ONE. MR. PEARSON PLEASE DO NOT BE OFFENDED BY MY COMMENTS BUT I HAVE LISTENED TO 530 AUDIO BOOKS BY 149 AUTHORS AND I CONSIDER MYSELF SOMEWHAT OF AN EXPERT ON THE NARRATION OF AN AUDIO BOOK. HOPEFULLY YOU WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS AGAIN. STICK TO WHAT YOU DO BEST. WRITE! LET THE PROFESSIONALS NARRATE YOUR BOOKS.

Summary: One of the Best Thrillers Around!
Review: Ridley Pearson's Middle of Nowhere is an extremely fast paced and interesting novel. It grabs you from page one with an action packed prologue. I had a hard time puting this book down and found myself reading until all hours of the night.

The characters in Middle of Nowhere are well developed. You seem to feel some of the emotions that Lou Boldt and Daphne Matthews experience. I definitely got feeling from this book as I got a case of the "uneasies" walking upstairs in the dark after reading.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a great book that is enjoyable, but also causing you to think about the plot. I loved it so much that I just bought another Lou Boldt series book by Ridley Pearson, and I can't wait to get to it!

Summary: Never achieved its potential
Review: This is the first book by Ridley Pearson I've read, but it didn't inspire me to pick up any others. The plot has some truly clever twists, but the entire book seemed more like an outline than a fully developed work. There were several points at which some magnificent character development could have taken place, but instead it was only sketched in during a meager paragraph that just hit the highlights. I felt as if the characters were just going through the motions, much as I was in trying to finish the book. Still, the characters are engaging, and I can see the value of following them through a series of stories -- perhaps that adds the details I found lacking.

Summary: Not my cup of tea....
Review: Well, this book was not my cup of tea--but I read the whoooollle thing. It's a bit too action-packed for me, something that probably appeals more to male readers. I intend to hand this to my husband and ask him what he thinks. He'll probably like it--right down to the little cutie stripper-girlfriend.

I am old enough to have actually read Agatha Christie's novels when she was still alive and publishing them, so my age may also be a factor in my preferences. I like mysteries that linger over the afternoon tea, describe the surroundings in detail, occur in exotic locations, and conrast civilized behaviour with horror (i.e., make you feel secure in your little armchair by the fire away from the big bad world out there). And please, show women as threatented or already dead--no torture scenes for me please.

Mr. Pearson seems to be a whiz at telecommunications tecnology, and his digressions on this subject and the connection to his plotline are interesting (I'm retired from AT&T so I may be biased). Some of Boldt's scenes with the other male police could have been edited. His interaction with various female characters is relatively entertainining. Boldt reminds me of many men I have known. So many women, so little time. Mathews may be beautiful, but she is either an egomaniac or a dumb cop --psychologist or not. Geez, I realize the book has to have some action (female victim saved by big boy cop), but why are women cops in novels so dumb?

This was my first Ridley Pearson book and I think one must read the earlier books to get some of the connections between characters. This is true for books by Patricia Cornwall and Deborah Crombie--but I have read all their books and know the history of the main characters. I don't care enough about Ridley's characters to go back and read his earlier books.

Summary: Exciting, Top-Notch Thriller
Review: Ridley Pearson sets the suspenseful tone for his seventh thriller featuring Seattle Police Lt. Lou Boldt in the prologue when officer Maria Sanchez pulls into her driveway, gets out of her car and is brutally attacked. The realism will make the reader apprehensive about pulling into their driveway and opening their car door for a very long time! As Boldt investigates the assault and officer Sanchez lies in the hospital on the brink of death, a case of "Blue Flu" takes over the police department. Boldt teams up again with police psychologist Daphne Matthews and Sergeant John LaMoia, to hunt down the people responsible for the assault on the officer as well as other victims of such beatings and a recent string of robberies. The investigation progresses, to the annoyance of the officers who have staged the first sickout in the history of the police department, to two brothers, both with extensive criminal histories. A common thread connects the crimes - a telemarketing operation based in a prison, an operation using hardened criminals to call unsuspecting people to tout their wares. Things heat up even more when Boldt is tempted to rekindle the flame of his affair with Daphne. Pearson is one of my favorite thriller-writers. He is a dynamic author, skillfully using real-life stories straight from the newspaper, expounding on them and landing them in the reader's lap. This one will make you sleep with the lights on! If you haven't discovered Ridley Pearson, it's time you did!

Summary: A book you will not BOLDT from
Review: Ridley Pearson had me rivited to the chair from the first word of this book. The story is filled with suspense, from the attack on a fellow police officer to the many plot twists that are not contrived at all but constant and intriguing. This book is a winner through and through. The characters are human as shown with Lou's feelings for his wife and Daphne which he tries to keep in check and the dialogue is also snappy and realistic. I look forward to the next Lou Boldt novel already, as the characters are people you can relate to and want to find out what happened to them next.
