Rating: Summary: Superb Review: A beautifuuly brooding and somewaht moving. piece of crime fiction. Out of all his novels, this for me is his finest. Some of his subsequently work has been a little bit repetitive, but still generally a class above the competition. This, however, is superb
Rating: Summary: A story about real people that do what they have to do. Review: A great story about Dave's life and troubles. Filled with "real" people, problems and places. A truly memorable cast of characters.
Rating: Summary: Another good book! Review: Any Dave Robicheaux book seems to be a good book, and "A Morning for Flamingos" is no exception. The only reason I didn't give the book 5 stars is the unlikely plot element of Dave going undercover. Don't these crooks watch TV or go to the movies? One minute he is supposed to be a good guy, the next minute a dirty cop - and the crooks buy it? Anyway, read the book - it is another winner in the series.
Rating: Summary: Louisiana's Finest Review: Being a Southern California-based mystery author with my debut novel in its initial release, I realize that there is quite a bit of debate about which crime fiction author best captures the ambience of my native SoCal. There is no debate involving Louisiana. James Lee Burke is clearly the master, and I believe A MORNING FOR FLAMINGOS is Burke's strongest work. Dave Robicheaux is left for dead during a prison escape, yet he doesn't die. He ends up back on the New Iberia police force going after a drug-kingpin named Tony Cardo. Clete Purcel tags along to guard Robicheaux's back, and they wouldn't mind catching up with the man who nearly killed Robicheaux. A MORNING FOR FLAMINGOS has a marvelous plot and well-drawn characters. Reading this book is like visiting that fabulous state of mind known as Louisiana.
Rating: Summary: One of Burke's fine Robicheaux's stories. Review: Burke is one of the few mystery writers who writes literature. His work should be studied in classrooms to illustrate how a down and dirty complex mystery story can be told with style, depth and thoughtfulness. His use of the English language is superb and his ability to share his world goes beyond vision; there is smell, touch, and feel.
Rating: Summary: Back at the bayou.... Review: Dave Robicheaux - Tommy Lee Jones; Ellen Barkin -Bootsie Giacano; Tony Cardo - Robert DeNiro; This book will make a great movie. You would only have to blow up two used crop dusters, a real clean hanger and a couple of pickup trucks.

Rating: Summary: Burke On Track Review: I had just about given up on James Lee Burke. After being stunned with the genius of "Neon Rain," I found most contemporary Dave Robicheaux novels rather gloomy and over-described affairs. Went back to "Black Cherry Blues" his Edgar-winning novel and was disappointed. Now, I feel I've read another gem. I am doubly pleased because from reading and seeing interviews, I think James Lee Burke is one of the most charming authors around. "A Morning for Flamingos" begins with the death of Dave's partner while transporting two prisoners, Te Beau, a New Iberia boy to whom Dave has certain obligations, and the menacing Jamie Lee Boggs. Dave is left critically wounded and remembers little of the actual escape. The story leads to underworld figures, voodoo, and the sordid, steamy underside of New Orleans. The pace and brooding menace never let up, and Burke allows no loose ends to annoy the reader. The characterizations are sharp, descriptive, and unforgettable. The solution is elegant and exciting. I liked Dave all over again.

Rating: Summary: The Dave Robicheaux series keeps getting better Review: I'm reading the Dave Robicheaux series in order. The Dave Robicheaux of A Morning For Flamingoes is very different and a bit more likable than the one we me in Heaven's Prisoners. He is also one of the most complex characters I've ever encountered in a book. The book gets you hooked right from the start and introduces most of the books significant characters. As in the first two books, Dave finds himself being drawn into a world he doesn't really want to visit. Disturbingly, he doesn't seem to try to hard to get out, which is just another aspect of his character. Speaking of character, this book is fulled with fascinating characters, with Tony Cardo being the most interesting. It makes you hope that some of these characters will return in future volumes. I'm eagerly looking forward to A Stained White Radiance.
