Rating: Summary: Gets better and better Review: I am almost afraid to start Tanenbaum's latest book (The Enemy Within, which is sitting at my elbow as I type this) because I fear it will be a let-down after his wonderful tale of True Justice. I have enjoyed all Tanenbaum's books and have been made aware of much about the spirit of the law from them. But even though his writing is always irresistible, his characters have not always been appealing. It seems as though over their years of living and loving together, Butch Karp and his wife Marlene Ciampi have become better people. It is the way a good marriage should be. The protagonists do not lose their edge, but they become somehow easier to identify with. This is ludicrous, because any people more unusual than Butch and Marlene and their daughter Lucy would be impossible to find in real life, but Tanenbaum is a master at making the unbelievable believable. There was one tiny thread that was left a little frayed at the book's conclusion and this nagged at me; it was the philosophical acceptance of fate by one well-centred character who did not deserve it. But knowing Tanenbaum, it is quite possible that this interesting person will appear again in later books, and perhaps we will learn more then. The author's characters are never truly archetypal. They all have good and bad points and are not defined in one-dimensional aspects. It gives the impression that Tanenbaum has, in his lifetime, actually met every single one of these people, and probably he has. And he can be very funny. I laughed aloud in at least one scene. This humour was an unexpected bonus that caught me by surprise. Tanenbaum's knowledge of the law is admirable in itself, but the fact that he is so compelling when he reveals it is a gift, God's grace, as his character Lucy might say. We are fortunate he chooses to use it in this way, sharing it with so many of us.
Rating: Summary: A Great Find! Review: I consider this book to be a great find. Looking for something to read one day in a discount store, I picked up this book and from the start was hooked on Tanenbaum's style and the Karp and Ciampi storyline. I have ordered several more of the series and can't wait to get into them.
Rating: Summary: What a let down! Review: I found this book to be boring....The author gave more detail than necessary and seemed to rattle on and on about nothing...I found myself daydreaming and waiting to get back to the main plot which was in itself marginally interesting...I read about 1/2 of the book and thought I would put it down, but I kept hoping that it would get better cause this book had such good reviews...by the way the book didn't get any better...In fact the ending was so predictable and was such a let down, I was mad at myself for finishing the book in the first place...what a waste of my time!
Rating: Summary: True Justice truly entertaining...... Review: I found this book to be not only entertaining but thought provoking as well. In the begining at the mention of infanticides I wanted no mercy and did not understand the mercy with which Butch and Marlene viewed these incidences. However by the end of the book though not quite as liberal as these two on the subject I did feel there were two sides to the story. I like the development of Lucy and it's good to have Marlene back in the courtroom. I don't want to give anything away as to plot so let me just say the reaction to the killer at the end seemed unbelieveable to me. But this is a minor criticism. If you have not read this series I would start at the begining, you will appreciate the characters all the more. I too feel it is refreshing to have a married couple, with kids who are not portrayed as boring or imbeciles! <ree-views>
Rating: Summary: Tananbaums Latest is Top Notch with a Few Missing Persons Review: I have loved all of the previous Karp novels and this one was no exception. The way Mr. Tanenbaum writes his characters (Butch, Marlene, and Lucy), I feel I know them. The only teenie negative in his latest tale was the absence of Harry Bello, Ray Guma, VT Newbury and for the most part Tran. I know these characters cant always be a part of the Karps lives but I sure did miss them. Not a whole lot of suspense but on the whole, a great story. Can't wait til next year for the next Karp adventure.
Rating: Summary: One of his better books Review: I have read all of this series and believe this is one of the better ones. I enjoyed this book and have enjoyed the way he has created the conflicting careers of the man and woman who became husband and wife and the complications those personalities and careers create. Good series, good book.
Rating: Summary: A letdown Review: I have read all the previous Karp series and found them to be real "page turners". True Justice had too much philosophy and not enough action for me. There were many boring pages scattered through the book promoting gun control and abortion, and agonizing over the unfairness of prosecuting minorities and drug users for the crimes they commit. If these lapses had been woven into the plot a little better I could have stomached them, but they seemed to me like disconnected stand alone lectures which the author dropped into the middle of the main story.
Rating: Summary: Read It NOW Review: I have read every Robert Tanenbaum novel and True Justice was everything that I enjoyed in his previous novels: the complexities of morality, religion, right and wrong, violence, and the expectations of society and ourselves. Tanenbaum's last two novels have been slightly disappointing, but this one makes up for it! Lucy is a real piece of work and I was glad that Tran was still slightly in the picture for her. I always thought Tanenbaum saw himself in Butch, so knowing that he was the "real-life" attorney for "Sarah", it was very interesting to see his experience reflected through Marlene instead of Butch. He managed this with great flair, blending legal strategy with the feminine attention to emotions and still kept all of the character of Marlene that keeps me coming back for more. I can't wait until Enemy Within hits paperback.
Rating: Summary: continuing saga of the Karp family Review: I haven't missed a Tanenbaum book yet and cannot wait for the next one. Marlene, Butch, Lucy, Zik and Zak, Harry-- all of em are my favorite characters. oops--missed Sweety and Tran.I've enjoyed following them from the beginning, and especially like the development of Lucy, as the adventures continue. Wonder when the twins will start solving crimes? It is after I finish a new book that I go back to previous Karp adventures and re-read. My husband thinks re-reading is silly , so please Mr. Tanenbaum, start on a new one soon! An insatiable reader in NWFla
Rating: Summary: Great listen! Review: I really liked this book though the mysteries were more or less open and shut, it was how people thought of them, moralized through them. Lucy, the daughter comes off as a bit incredible, in her talents and religious convictions but it's a nice addition. The concept that a teenager is thinking deeply on the Universe was a welcome change. I would definitely keep my eyes open for another book about this family.
