Rating: Summary: Keeps you on the edge of your seat! Review: A great story. This was my first Nevada Barr/Anna
Pigeon mystery. I like Anna she's very believeable since Miss Barr does what she writes about. I would just like to know why part of the story
had to include incest. What part did it play in the telling of the story? All in all anyone who wants to read about a great murder should pick up this book.
Rating: Summary: Freezing fear Review: Anna Pigeon is a Park Ranger who has been transferred from the hot Texas desert (read Track of the Cat) to the cold reaches of Lake Superior where her skills as a diver are tested by ghostly images from a sunken ship to the very real danger of a murderer.Nevada Barr does not simply tell the story, but she reveals it through details that give the reader insight into both the world of the Park Rangers and underwater spectacles that delight the imagination. As she learns about this cold world, so do we. As Anna solves the mystery, we feel the fear building because we know that she is in danger and that she didn't get into that danger by ignoring her common sense, but by following her basic intelligence to logical conclusions. Logic can sometimes take too long, which always adds to great suspense.
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: Captures the realism on the dangers of boating on Lake Superior and around Isle Royal. Nevada and I met some yeaes ago while she was a ranger at the Windigo station at Isle Royal. Tommy's Toy
Rating: Summary: A Superior Book Review: Compared to Track of the Cat, the first in the Anna Pigeon series, A Superior Death is a pulitzer winner. Cat was transparent in plot and the characters were thin and unlikeable. Superior has a much more complex plot and a true murder *mystery*. Anna now makes sensible conclusions, unlike Cat where her thoughts were silly. The character has much more depth, and starts to be somewhat likeable (she gets even better in Ill Wind). Sister Molly is still pretty awful, and not really used to her potential. As always, the vivid picture of the national park in question, this time Isle Royale, is spectacular. With the second in the series, it now makes sense why it has become so popular.
Rating: Summary: THE VERY BEST!! Review: Each of Ms. Barr's books I pick up is her best! I have read nearly all of her books now. I think I have one to go. It really is like finding an old friend. Anna Pigeon is a real person, with foibles and vulnerabilities, strengths, weaknesses, skills and awkwardness. In this story she is law enforcement ranger again in cold north (Lake Superior of the title) and scuba diving and boat handling. This is an excellent plot. Much like murder in the locked room. How WAS it done? You will be hooked on it. Then you will realize you have become rather fond of Ranger Anna Pigeon, and in the end you will be a fan of Nevada Barr. I know. I have been there. This book, and all her books, I highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: Great mystery; scuba divers would be especially interested Review: Great mystery. My favorite of the 4 Nevada Barr books I've read. Interesting characters and setting (especially for scuba divers).
Rating: Summary: Disappointed in the characters, good mystery and setting... Review: I have had many recommendations to read this book and so I purchased three of Nevada Barr's mysteries. I love the national park settings and enjoy the park as an important part of the story. The murder is intriguing and its solution quite good. However, I'm disappointed in the morals of the characters and the independent choices they make during the course of the story. There isn't much about Nevada Barr's character that I really like...except that she is a gutsy woman ranger who finds herself in the middle of a mystery to solve.
Rating: Summary: Barr Fan Review: I have read most of Barr's books. This one has wonderful descriptions of an area I am totally unfamiliar with. We had to get the computer maps out and see where all the places were - and if they really existed. They do. I did notice a mixup. Molly is Anna's sister. Holly is Hawk's sister. On pages 187 and 188 of the paperback, the name Molly is used instead of Holly. Small matter but it confused me for a moment. Otherwise, write on Nevada Barr!
Rating: Summary: in vino veritas Review: I have read the entire Anna Pigeon series once already. This time I am reading them in order. I really enjoy this book because Ms Barr provides such accurate insight to NPS inner workings. I have known people who have worked for NPS and know people much like Tinker and Damien, who seem drawn to this kind of work. I love the intertwined story lines between Anna and her sister, Molly. In my copy are several typos where Holly is spelled 'Molly' and it was a bit confusing but I straightened it all out. I feel the cold of the lake and although most of the books in this series feel dark to me, I still am captivated by the descriptive prose. And the twisty ending is great (no hints)!
Rating: Summary: Excellent adventure with great descriptions. Review: I have read the first three Anna Pigon books in order, which I recomment. The references back to previous books are good if you have read them. Anna's character grows in each book and you feel you have been inside the author's mind with each read. And that Anna and Nevada share a tremendous amount of characteristics, both mental and physical. Anna is very much in touch with her masculine side, but still every inch a woman, and a very interesting one at that. I am going forward to the other books with relish. Keep 'em coming, Nevada!!
