Rating: Summary: Not a sure bet Review: i think that this book had alot of promise however it was not that good because this lucian and jade hardly spent anytime with each other we spent more time on sophia and darian. so really the way i saw it lucian coulden't really have loved jade he probably still saw her as his late wife so i love shannon drake but i think she can do better than that.
Rating: Summary: good, but... Review: I thoroughly enjoy good vampire stories, and I enjoyed this one. My problems with this book were that certain parts of it seem unnecessary, while others needed a bit more fleshing out. Also, there's no mention of what happened to the character Rick at the end of the story. The last you hear of him, Darian (one of the vampires) had him down and was reaching for his knife (which I took to mean he hadn't killed him yet but was planning to) and then all hell breaks loose; while everyone escapes before the building burns down, you don't hear what happened to Rick. I find it hard to believe that such a likeable character, and one who assimilated to his new 'life' as a vampire so well, would have just been arbitrarily killed off, especially as he was the focus of the main femals character for much of the story. It's a loose end that should have been tied up. Also, the number of typos in the books drove me crazy! One thing I really hate when devouring a story is to run across typos or sentences that have been repeated due to bad typesetting; it justs breaks the concentration and the whole mood reading a good book puts you in. But I think several of the characters, including Jade, her sister, Lucian, and Maggie were very interesting; I'd have liked to see more dialogue between the sisters, and between all four characters, especially the few attempts at humor that were made - those were very good. I will say I liked this book enough to go out and get the preceding book in this series. And I hope to see these characters again in a future story. I do think (if he survived, that is) that Rick would make a good character in a story of his own; nothing like the combination of good looks, intelligence, being a cop *and* a vampire to get one's imagination going!
Rating: Summary: I wish the characters were real Review: I thought this book was fantastic. I don't care if he was a vampire, I would love to meet a man like Lucian. He was such a lovable character. It was my perfect type of book. It wasn't overly mushy on the romance and the suspense was non-stop. I can easily say of all the books I've read it was my favorite. It is something I could read over and over.
Rating: Summary: The best one out of the series so far Review: I'm a big fan of vampire fiction, so, I tend to buy/read anything that comes out, regardless of 'genre', (ie: horror, romance, etc..) I've read all of the books in this series, so far, including the one that came out this year...which, technically, was a VAMPIRE book ABOUT A WEREWOLF!?-not to mention mind-numbingly BORING! This book, however, has not only an interesting story and characters--several of which are return characters throughout the series--but a few 'chills' as well. All-and-all: A GOOD read!
Rating: Summary: Do You Believe in Vampires? Review: I've been reading the Susan Krinard series on werewolves, so I guess this was a natural progression. What an excellent book!! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, and the storyline was just scary enough. While we assume that there is really nothing in reality such as werewolves and vampires, the author has managed to describe events and characters that make me a little hesitant to discount such theories.
Rating: Summary: Suspense and romance in a vampire novel Review: If you loved the first one, then you will definitely want to read this! A vampire from back in the times of the viking combats with his maker in this exciting and vivid novel. Couldn't put it down til I was done...which was about 8 hours after started reading it! If you enjoy history with a vampire flair then this one is for you...
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable, despite the lousy editing job Review: In Shannon Drake's second installment of her chilling vampire trilogy, WHEN DARKNESS FALLS, readers meet Jade MacKinnon on what turns out to be the most terrifying night of her life. A tourist in Scotland, Jade witnesses a bloodbath when she takes a midnight ghost tour of Edinburgh's cemeteries. Some months later, her support group of fellow writers becomes concerned on her behalf when the other survivors of the Edinburgh tragedy start turning up dead - brutally murdered. Not only that, but there's no one around to protect Jade: her new boyfriend, gorgeous cop Rick, has come down with some exotic, flu-like illness. Then there's all the mysterious strangers entrancing the erstwhile and fanciful writers...Not the least of these mysterious strangers is Lucian DeVeau, "king" of the vampires. Lucian has arrived to protect Jade from his enemy, Sophia, who believes Jade to be the reincarnation of Lucian's wife Igraine. Rick notwithstanding, Jade is captivated by the handsome, powerful, and enigmatic Lucian. In fact, she falls head over heels in record time. But is Lucian drawn to her, Jade MacKinnon, or is he only interested due to her resemblance to Igraine? Can Jade bring herself to love one vampire while being stalked by two others? Can Lucian see through the face of his old love to the real woman underneath? Can he give up his immortality the way Maggie did for Sean in BENEATH A BLOOD RED MOON? The answers to most of these questions are obvious, but Drake's stunning, take-no-prisoners way of telling the tale keeps readers interested from the first page to the last. Lucian and Jade are good as stand-alone characters (as Lucian proved in Maggie and Sean's tale) and they make a very interesting couple; the chemistry, while rather abrupt, is not farfetched. Jade's optimism, gentleness, and sympathy is a great foil to Lucian's cynicism and protective instincts. The secondary characters, that wacky writers' group, are delightful - comic relief in the face of the pure evil that is Sophia and Damien. The unfolding of the plot in real time and in flashbacks to different points in Lucian's history is superb - Drake has mastered the art of suspense. Like its predecessor, the only real complaint I have about WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is that there are a significant number of typographical errors in the book that can detract from the overall reading experience. It grated on my nerves that Lucian's soulful description of his native Scotland is marred by such a typo: he describes the appeal of his homeland as "like a heartbet." Of course, you know he means "heartbeat," but such a lovely sentiment should not be clouded up with errors. I've said it before, and it's worth saying again: Ms. Drake is a top-selling author who deserves a better editing staff. Nonetheless WHEN DARKNESS FALLS is a compelling blend of romance, mystery, and horror, and I recommend it to fans of paranormal romances. I look forward to reading the conclusion to this trilogy, which, judging by the teaser included in the back of the present novel, should be as gripping as its predecessors.
Rating: Summary: Who said a book about Vampires had to be realistic?! Review: Let me start this by responding to what one of the other reviewer said. She asked if she was the only one that didn't like it.. mentioning that she couldn't get into the book. I have that problem with many books, but NOT here! I suppose I can see how some things might have bothered you but ... be honest, this isn't a history lesson. It's a *FICTION* story, it's meant to entertain. As an author myself I do do my research when I'm using historic information, but as a reader ... I don't care! I don't go running to the history book to see if they got the size of the ship wrong. If they did, does that make the story bad???? NO WAY! I admit it. I love this book. Shannon Drakes vampires are not your typical vamps, and I love that. They aren't like the vampirs I write about, or the others I've read about. It's very refreshing. I love the characters and am anxiously awaiting the third book (I was delighted to discover that it would be out in Feb 2001 and NOT in Oct as I had read in this book) If the third book proves as good as the first two ... I'm gonna be thrilled.
Rating: Summary: when darkness falls and under a blood red moon Review: Loved both books by Shannon Drake. Couldn't put the books down. Hope Shannon continues with the vampire series. Understand she has a novel coming out in October 2001 - read the preview at the back of the When Darkness Falls novel. Would like to know the name of the new book.
Rating: Summary: Avid Vampire Readers... Review: Ok.. I have not read this book yet, so maybe this is a dumb thing, to write a review, but I read one review I found to be disturbing. A person was discouraging people from reading the book, which is her right. but she also said it was a waste of time and money... that is not true. As any avid readers know, whether you arte into vampires or not, if an author writes a series, like the one started with beneath a blood red moon, wich, I will add... is a wonderful book, you could not possibly be satisfied without reading the whole series, if you are going to continue reading it at all. I have also read deep midnight, and I have to say, that too was wonderful.... and it makes me anxious to read this one. So, if you are afraid you will not like it, that doesn't mean don't read it, just borrow it from a library... just for the background on the characters, it will be worth your while. Especially if you have not read deep midnight yet. A few spots were muddy at first, for lack of prior info. I sign off now, hoping that i have not sounded to dumb.
