Rating: Summary: Very good read! Review: I just finished reading the book. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the other reviews here but I decided to ignore them and decide for myself. I'm glad I did because this book was excellent! I sat and read page after page. I could not put it down! I am not a fast reader. It can literally take weeks to months for me to finish a book but this one took me no time at all. For the first time ever, I sat and read more than 200 pages in a sitting. It just captivated my attention! This book is the second in Shannon Drake's vampire series. The story stands on its own so if you haven't read the first in the series, you won't necessarily miss anything. I haven't read the first yet but I definitely plan to. The characters became quite real to me. I enjoyed learning the progression and the twists in the story were perfect. One little thing about the book though, at least my copy, is that there are many typos. It hasn't interferred with the story for me though
Rating: Summary: Lucian Is Yummy, And This Book Is Well Worth The Read! Review: I loved this book. This is Lucian's story and well worth picking up in my opinion. I am new to the Vampire Genre so I picked up these books due to the author, and not due to the topic. I read the first book "Beneath A Blood Red Moon, and that of course led me to this one, and I was thrilled with it. Lucian is the King of Vampires and the story opens with Lucian saving a young mortal woman (Jade) from certain death during a Halloween tour in Scotland. Jade finally returns to New Orleans after her horrific ordeal knowing what she saw, but having no one believe that corpses came alive and killed the people in her tour. She finally begins putting her life back together a year later, and then something odd starts to happen, she starts dreaming dreams about the man that saved her. These are not the dreams that she should be having when she is involved with another man.... Even if that involvement has not led to bed yet. Then something terrifying happens. Survivors of the Scottish Halloween Massacre start being killed. The ritual is the same, only it's now taking place in the states. Jade is in danger, and only one man can save her Lucian. Lucian saves the young Jade and is stunned to see his past finally coming back to haunt him. The killers of the Scottish Massacre are his creator and her lieutenant Darin. They are back and they are looking for revenge against Lucian. Lucian knows that there are rules for his kind and that he is bound by them, but Sophia, and Darin must be stopped. They choose Jade as their victim and use her as a weapon against Lucian. See Lucian, Sophia, and even Darin believe that Jade is Lucian's long lost love and wife from his past, and Sophia will do all she can to destroy her. Sophia hates Lucian, but wants him all the same and will all that she can to make sure that happens. This is a great book and Maggie, Sean, and Jack make a return appearance in this page turning installment of Ms. Drakes Vampire trilogy. Lucian is all a vampire should be, tall, dark, sexy, and just a little dangerous. I loved the added history and background of Lucian. It helped a great deall to understand why he was the way he was. The chemistry between Lucian and Jade is hot, and the secondary characters that introduced this time around are great, I loved the writers group. You won't want to miss this book.

Rating: Summary: Probably the worst book I've ever read Review: I picked up this book as a bit of escapist summer reading - and boy am I sorry I did. The plot in this book is corny to the extreme, and the reader is given hardly any insight into the characters' actions or thoughts - we are only given descriptions of what they do and say but we don't get inside their heads at all. I found especially the character of Jade extremely frustrating, because the author chose not to tell me what went through her mind and why she jumped into bed with Lucian (even though she actually had a boyfriend - the fact that she hadn't slept with him yet was a fairly feeble excuse, in my opinion) as soon as she did. Also, we are told nothing about what Jade and Lucian's relationship is like when they're not in bed together - in fact, they only seem to come together for sex and nothing more. Frankly, I couldn't have cared less what happened to any of the characters by the end of the book, because they were so wafer thin and clichéd (naturally Lucian just has to be dark and brooding and he has to dress only in black and hang around at graveyards and sleep in a tomb). The writing is extremely stiff and clumsy throughout the book, reminding me of the way a 13-year-old might write, and the writer seems to be overly fond of disjointed sentences, apparently intended to convey high drama and possibly stream of consciousness but only ending up being irritating and annoying. Melodrama to the max this book may contain, but it's just so over the top it's ridiculous. Then again, the scene in which Jade learns about Lucian being a vampire is an anticlimax to say the least - she hardly seems to bat an eyelid. Also, there are several factual errors in the book concerning Edinburgh (for example, there isn't a single shop in the Royal Mile where you could buy a broomstick, or anything even resembling one, so why claim that there is?). By the end of the book I was laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of it all, and bothering to finish the book at all was hard work. Frankly, I'm finding it hard to believe this writer actually got this piece of garbage published and was paid money for it. I realize romance novels aren't meant to win the Nobel prize for literature, but, come on, even they shouldn't insult the reader's intelligence. I'm going to sell my copy to my local second-hand bookstore tomorrow, but the time I wasted on this and could have spent on something actually worth reading I cannot get back, and for that I'm sorry.
Rating: Summary: Kitty Review: I picked up this book at work. I love to read, just about anything, and vampire books are really great. This one was okay, by that I mean, it was gruesome in some parts, but not to gruesome. The love scenes were sexy, but not overly so. This was my first read of Ms Drake and I will read more books by her. Already ordered the other two in the trilogy. (...)
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I read the first book and was looking forward to the sequel. But I was disappointed. The sequel definitely does not match the quality of the original. Too much time was spent on descriptive passages and not enough on interaction between the two main characters. I enjoyed the minor characters, but occasionally got lost because there were quite a few of them. I think fewer surrounding characters would have been better. While the suspense and action was very well done, I wish there had been more relationship development between Lucian and Jade. There was so little of their relationship that leaving it out all together would not have materially changed the book. I know Ms. Drake can do much better.
Rating: Summary: An exciting dark tale of love and suspense! Review: I really enjoyed 'When Darkness Falls', more so than I enjoyed the first book of the trilogy - 'Beneath a Blood Red Moon'. 'When Darkness Falls' is filled with rivetting suspense, intense characters, and a sitting on the edge of your seat plot. I hated to put it down. Drake really shows her creative imagination in this one - her back story development on Lucian is fantastic. I also enjoyed her discussions of good vs. evil and all the gray matter in between. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves vampires, suspense, romance or just wants a great read!
Rating: Summary: not bad Review: I really enjoyed this book this was the first one i picked up by her and i also went back and read Beneath a Blood Red Moon and Deep Midnight but this was my fav. i recomed this to any vampire reader or ones that are just starting out with reading about vampires but their is people that are saying that it wasn't any good but if you are reading this then i think you should find out for yourself i know its not for everyone but hey give it a try go to the libray or a used bookstore it has a great story and great charators the romance was also very diffrent from anything else i have read in vampire romance or just romance but check it out.
Rating: Summary: Good read Review: I really liked this book. I thought that the characters were interesting and I liked the plot. I admit that there were a few parts that were alittle confusing and could have been explained better but over all it was a good book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good vampire story. It was well written and I enjoyed reading it. I think Shannon Drake is a wonderful writer.
Rating: Summary: I'm impressed Review: I saw this book at the bookstore, just browsing. It caught my attention because Ms. Drake and I share the same first name. I bought it and when I got home, looked it up on here and was a bit worried from the few not-so-good-reviews it got. But I stayed up all night long reading until I fell asleep and then as soon as I got up turned on the light and went at it again. Talk about a good book! She did use a lot of short choppy sentences and lots of descriptions, but that made it more vivid, real, frightening to me. I fell asleep expecting Darian to come a-tapping on my window and rip my throat out. Considering vampires have never creeped me out in the least, that's pretty cool. I'll definitely be getting the first one for Christmas, and the third when it comes out next October. She made the characters seem like real people, and the humor comes in at just the right times, keeping you on the edge of your seat while giving you a good laugh before the horrors of Sophia and all her evil come back even more menacing and frightening than before. There are times you wish you could just strangle Jade and Shanna and the other characters for being so stupid but that's normal. And Lucian drove me crazy. I loved the guy. I would have taken Jade's place just to be with him. Pretty good when you can create a character in a book that affects a reader's mind so much. Did anyone else notice and find it amusing that all through the book Ms. Drake referred to herself subtly? =) The bar (Drake's), they stopped in Ireland (Shannon, Ireland, to be exact), and Jade's sister was Shanna. I thought it was cute, really. Anyway, this is really a great book, and I'd say give it a try. If it's not your style then it's just not, but I really wouldn't recommend it to kids under 13 I don't think. Around there anyway. I don't know if I'll ever be able to keep the images of corpses coming after me or people having their necks ripped apart and their heads torn off out of my dreams. Just a bit of warning, and the sexual content is a little strong. Not as bad as the dollar store romances, but still. A last word of advice, never invite anyone in, and happy hunting!
