Summary: EXCELLENT...CHILLING AND SUSPENSEFUL
Review: As Jade MacGregor attends a vacation tour in a Scotish cemetery, she witnesses the other members of the tour brutally murdered by a centuries old vampire.

A year later, in the French Quarter, she is still haunted by images of the night in the cemetery, but with the news of murders in a cemetery in New York, Jade realizes the new killings are no coincidence, and that she has been targeted by somebody or something very evil that is set out to destroy her.

"When Darkness Falls" is a gothic, page-turning thriller, that blends horror, vampires, romance, eerie settings, historical flashbacks, and edge-of-the-seat suspense to have readers craving more.

Shannon Drake has crafted a vampire novel that would make Anne Rice proud; it is a well-written, and skillfully plotted book that begs to be read in a single sitting.

A MUST read!

Summary: TOO GORY FOR ME
Review: Frankly I found this story just too gory for my likes. I like ghost stories and such but vampires and blood graphically described just turns me off.

The writing itself is excellent, just did not like the prose.

Summary: Am I the Only One?
Review: I appear to be the only one who doesn't think this book is wonderful. Sorry. In all fairness, I haven't completed it as yet, but that's simply because I just can't get into it.

First of all, the writing style is driving me up the wall. Too choppy and terse with little or no segue.

Must everyone speak with such exuberance?!

Dialogue interrupted with long winded descriptions of the speaker is distracting. Such was the case with both the tour group in the beginning and the party scene at Jade's apartment. Somebody speaks, then we pause for a description of their height, weight, coloring, wardrobe, occupation, brief history, mother's shoe size and Dentist's name. The next person speaks, and we go through the same thing again. This detracts from the both dialogue and characterization. And may I mention, in the case of the tour group, there was little need. I require no detailed descriptions of characters who aren't going to make it past page 22.

Secondly, certain details show an enormous lack of research on the author's part. For instance: Norse raiding ships were not very large, the biggest held only about forty to fifty men. Yet, in the attack on the coast of Scotland, three ships held a crew large enough that many were killed and still left a "horde" to storm the port.

Certain transport vessels had a deeper section amidships, or a false deck over the middle, for storage of goods, but they did not possess a hold below deck.

The success of the Viking raiders lay in their swiftness. They swooped in, attacked, and left with breathtaking speed. Difficult to accomplish when you have to unload and load horses. This is why they almost never hauled horses with them on raids. Add to that, that there was little room for horses aboard the raiding vessels.

These points, in addition to the choppy style and haphazard character development, have me struggling to get through it. I picked up this book not because it was a romance, but because it was a vampire book. There is a dearth of good vampire fiction these days and, sadly, this book does little to alleviate the situation.

Summary: What a nice surprise
Review: I bought this book not knowing what to expect. I was surprised that this book was about vampires. Not an Ann Rice fan myself, I thought oh oh this will be bad. But boy was it good. It had the perfect amount of suspense and yes romance. Go figure. Read and enjoy the life or unlife of Lucian the King of the vampires (but really a good guy) and his lady love. He is out to get rid of the bad vampires and save the one he has loved for centuries.

Summary: Good choice for a satisfying vampire tale!
Review: I enjoyed "When Darkness Falls" just as I have every Shannon Drake novel I have read. She chooses New Orleans, a very "Vampirey" city for a setting and makes good use of the above ground cemeteries. The characters are very engaging and strong, drawing you into their drama. The action is fast paced and suspenseful, keeping those pages turning. I liked the flash backs to the past that told the Lucian's story, how he became a vampire, and how he reached his powerful position. The villians were strong and interesting as well as Jade, the hero's love interest. If you like romances, thrillers, or vampire stories, then you are bound to be satisfied with this one. But beware - if you wait until darkness falls to pick it up, you may find yourself reading until the dawn breaks!

Summary: I love this book!
Review: I happen to be an avid reader (and writer for that matter!)and I readh Christen Feehan, Maggie Shayne, Amanda Ashley, and the like. I LOVE this series by Shannon Drake. No, the vampires are not your typical vampires(is there really such a thing as a typical vampire?? <G>)but that doesn't mean, as a certain reviewer wrote, that her book is a waste of time and money. THAT IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING TRUE!!!! I read this book when it first came out, and I ABSOLUTELY love it. I have read all three of the books... Beneath a Bloodred Moon, When Darkness Falls, and Deep Midnight. I love each of them.

Summary: Amazing
Review: I happened to glance at the preview for this book in another of her books and I was stunned. I was determined to read it. I never imagined that a vampire love story would actually work. But amazingly it does. Drake proves to her fans and new readers that nothing is impossible. Now I'm wanting all three of the books. I can't wait until I get it!! It's non-stop action and plenty of romance. I highly recommend it!!! It's worth it!!!! A true page turner!!!

Review: I have been unable to put this book down. This is the first time I have read a book by this author. I read it in 1 1/2 days working full time. Loved it.

Summary: Very good read!
Review: I just finished reading the book. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the other reviews here but I decided to ignore them and decide for myself. I'm glad I did because this book was excellent! I sat and read page after page. I could not put it down! I am not a fast reader. It can literally take weeks to months for me to finish a book but this one took me no time at all. For the first time ever, I sat and read more than 200 pages in a sitting. It just captivated my attention!

This book is the second in Shannon Drake's vampire series. The story stands on its own so if you haven't read the first in the series, you won't necessarily miss anything. I haven't read the first yet but I definitely plan to. The characters became quite real to me. I enjoyed learning the progression and the twists in the story were perfect.

One little thing about the book though, at least my copy, is that there are many typos. It hasn't interferred with the story for me though
