Summary: English perversions
Review: A new detective with the burden of a murdered brother, attempts to solve the murders of five young women. An interesting and promising entry into the mass murderer field will keep you turning the pages towards a smashing finale.

Summary: Good Writing - Sickening Murder/Multilation Details
Review: No doubt there is a market for whodunnits that list every grisley detail of the sick perversions that serial killers visit on their victims. If that "rings your chime" then, this book is a mother lode for you. Too bad for me; I don't get off on that stuff. This is an excellent writer and the personal details of the hero's life are much more fascinating than the murder mystery. But all that virtue is buried under such horrifying, stomach-turning descriptions of bodies hacked, sliced, and violated in every way - that THIS reader lost interest. Who wants this garbage in one's mind? If you do, go for it. I pass.

Summary: Gruesome stuff!
Review: Not a bad little back from first timer Mo Hayder. It is extremely graphical and sometimes the English police terminology was hard to understand, but I definately recommend this book if you can stomach the details and if you don't mind the medical terminology.

The story is sensational even though halfway through you know who the killer is, it doesn't stop there. It is diffcult to reveal the killer half way into the book and still keep the reader interested, but Hayder did it well.

Not as good as Lehane, Pottinger or Deaver but I will definately be getting Hayder's next novel.

Summary: I finally took a breath....
Review: I realized that I had not taken a breath through the last 10 chapters. This book gives new meaning to "I just couldn't put it down!" This book is fantastic and ranks right up there as one of my all-time favorites, and I have read every one from Cornwell, Deaver, Patterson and Palmer. Mo Hayder is to be commended for her first effort. She expertly developed the characters, and created moments in time and people that wove together, building to the shattering and unforgettable climax. It is graphic but not grauitous, convoluted but not confusing. I did find the British police terminology and slang a bit hard to get through, but I could truly feel the pain of the horrific torture until I was released through the turn of the last page. The images from this book will stay with me for a long time. Now we need to see Caffrey and Rebecca work on the next case together.

Summary: MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT !
Review: When this book came out; the publishers were comparing it with Thomas Harris's work, they even went so far as to give a money back gurantee if you thought that the comparison was unwarranted; I really wish I had bought it then.If ever a book had glowing reviews just on the basis of pre-release hype and hoopla, it has to be this one. I tried to get involved, Jack caffrey looked like he was developing into a interesting character but somewhere down the line, the author seems to have given up on the characters in favour of cliches and gratuitous gore and violence and towards the end, it degenerated into just one more serial killer book ; not that i have anything against that genre; but comparison with Thomas harris is going way too far; Red Dragon was and still is for me the benchmark by which all books in this genre will forever be judged. The conclusion of the book was laboured and it did look to me like the author had run out of steam and was hurrying to meet a publishing deadline. All in all, read this book if you do not have any expectations but if you are under the impression that you are going to read anything in Thomas harris's or even Jeffrey Deaver's leaugue ; Fuggetaboutit !

Summary: Oh man this is so gross
Review: fans of Graham Masterton would love Birdman. Awfully graphic descriptions of truly sadistic acts. I cant even remember what the story was about -..

just kidding.. yeah well the story's ok, some good characters and plot twists, not bad for a first timer. Just the truly gross out desriptions of corpses and what the bad guy does to the victims may put some people off. A few times I had to put the book down to get some air.

I didnt think the blow by blow account of the gross stuff was really necessary (see how Jeff Deaver and Thomas Harris do it) but then just my 2 cents.

Summary: Ugly
Review: One reviewer said ugly....yes, this was an ugly little book. It felt like the author was trying too hard to draw readers into the story with bizarre descriptions...rude off the cuff conversation... I read a lot...at least 2 books a week...this would not be an author I would follow.

Summary: MOVE OVER PATRICIA CORNWELL!
Review: Mo, your Jack Caffery is gonna give Kay Scarpetta a run for her money---I know because I've read all of Cornwell's books and you're right up there with her! I cannot belive this is a first book. The plot was intriguing; the dialogue was excellent and fast-paced and the action was as wild as a roller coaster out of control! Loved the plot which kept me guessing all the way through the story. I hope you write many more books with Jack Caffery so we can see him develop even more. Congratulations on a fabulous book!

Summary: wonderful story, sad ending
Review: The thriller had me one the edge of my seat. So much so that I finished the book in two days only to be left unfulfilled at the end. Hayder had many storylines going and unfortunatly something had to give. The ending did not offer enough closer on the issue of the main characters brothers death. Overall great story just wish the ending was a bit more fulfilling

Summary: A Good Creepy Read...
Review: Birdman is an entertaining read - it's not high-art or the pinnacle of literature in the early 21st century. So, don't expect it to be. Having said that, its a good ride.

Taking a page out of the Thomas Harris Workbook for Thriller Authors, Hayder develops a very twisted plot structured around a string of serial killings in London. The characters are well developed. The relationships between characters play out predictably but there are enough twists, turns and surprises to outweigh some of the book's shortcomings.
