Rating: Summary: Riveting! Review: Raine Conner is shocked when, after hearing her doorbell ring, she peers into her viewer camera to see none other than FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy. What "SupSpAg" Quincy, ex lover, and witness to a rough time in her life, wants, she can't begin to imagine. She is shocked when he reveals that he wants to look into his daughter's accident, an accident that eventually lead to her death. It's been over a year since Mandy's car accident, and Quincy has reason to believe that there was more to the accident than just a case of Mandy indulging in too much to drink once again. Raine thinks that Quincy might once again be playing the white knight for her, and is hesitant to accept his offer of a case. After all, she's just gotten her investigating license, and it seems almost too good to be true that an actually paying customer could already be on her doorstep. And she just doesn't know if she can work with Quincy. She'd trusted him once... Special Agent Pierce Quincy knows there was more to his daughters' accident that what was concluded. He knew that she'd had a drinking problem, but she'd been attending AA, and her best friend claimed that she'd had nothing to drink that night. So where did the alcohol come from? And what about this guy that her friends claimed that she'd been seeing? Why hadn't he shown up for the funeral, or even to visit her in all the time she was in hospital? It just didn't seem right to him, but he didn't want his superiors to get the message that he was just one more father unable to let go. So, even though they had a lot of baggage that remained unclaimed between them, he feels the answer is to hire Raine and have her investigate. As Raine begins to investigate, she realizes that there is definitely more to be known that what they'd thought. And when Piece's ex wife is found dead, with all fingers pointing to him as a suspect, the story begins to unravel. Raine and Pierce both find that they definitely care about one another, but that there had been so many other thing's going on in their life, they were unable to see one another. Ms. Gardner pens a wondrous, on the edge of your seat thriller with The Next Accident. The excitement doesn't let up, and she keeps you guessing from page to page. It was great to see two such wounded people as Raine and Pierce, and Piece's remaining daughter, find each other, and working to build relationships from the ashes of what once was. An incredibly gripping read. Don't miss this one!
Rating: Summary: Tepid romance-hotter suspense. Review: Revising the roles of now ex-cop Rainie Conner, and FBI agent Pierce Quincy, Lisa Gardner takes us along on their new battle with evil. Someone is hunting down Quincy's loved ones, finding their most intimate weaknesses, and then using these weaknesses to gruesomely end their lives. The victims know their killer, and those remaining do as well. The question then becomes which trusted friend or lover is it? A master of disguises, he insinuates himself into the victim's lives, and then when least expected, he pounces. Even though the suspense was kept alive by keeping the identity of the killer well hidden from the reader, I was still not satisfied with this book. I feel that these are worthwhile characters, but are in desperate need of development. Is Rainie an independent yet troubled and scarred woman, or is she a wise-cracking vamp? The romantic entanglement between Rainie and Quincy also left much to be desired, will they or won't they? The inconsistencies in the yes's and no's become tiresome after awhile, and soon I just didn't care. So while the suspense sizzles, the romance and characters merely fizzle.
Rating: Summary: A stunning work of romantic suspense Review: Small town police officer Lorraine "Rainie" Connor and supervisory special agent Pierce Quincy worked together, solving a case involving mass murders. Their relationship could have developed into something more but Rainie felt she wasn't good enough for him and pushed him out of her life. Now they are brought back together once again to solve the biggest case of their career or die trying. This case is up close and very personal for Pierce because his daughter is in an auto accident that was no accident and his ex-wife is killed. The local Virginia police finger Pierce as their prime suspect. Pierce moves heaven and earth to protect his remaining daughter Kimberly with Rainie's help. She wants to make sure that the man she cares about doesn't lose anymore people he cares about. She also wants to see him stay alive so they can begin a future together. THE NEXT ACCIDENT is a stunning work of romantic suspense with so many unexpected twists that the reader will not be able to predict what happens next. Lisa Gardner has written a fast paced action adventure plot while never forgetting to create characters the audience so that the audience will feel strongly enough for them to survive and get it on together. Anybody interested in seeing how Pierce and Rainie first met should read THE THIRD VICTIM even though THE NEXT ACCIDENT is a stand-alone thriller. Harriet Klausner
Rating: Summary: Be Wary of Appearances Review: The central two characters of this novel of suspense, Pierce Quincy, a FBI super agent, and Rainie Conner, formerly a small-town cop, continue their relationship first established in The Third Victim. The tragic death of Quincy's eldest daughter, a recovering alcoholic, mentioned in the first novel becomes a disturbing murder investigation over a year later in this one. Soon, it becomes obvious that a psychopath is targeting Quincy, who undoubtedly has acquired numerous enemies in his FBI career.
The modus-operandi of the antagonist is especially insidious, as he becomes intimately involved in the lives of his victims using a variety of impeccable disguises. The victims never see their demise coming. In addition, he is able to place suspicion on Quincy. The story is gripping and moves quickly. The Rainie - Quincy relationship is given much attention and is ever evolving.
In the end the reader may not be satisfied that anyone, regardless of the level of deviancy and motivation, could combine the powers of manipulation and lethality that Quincy's opponent seemed to have. But then again someone with ordinary powers would not instill great fear in potential victims and investigators. Basically the book is another good Lisa Gardner effort.
Rating: Summary: Three Stars Review: THE NEXT ACCIDENT, as with all Lisa Gardner books, is a very well-written and suspenseful book.
Rating: Summary: Chilling Suspense with a Devious Psycopath! Review: This book scared the living daylights out of me. Not because it was full of graphic violence or gory scenes. It's the chilling suspense that just steadily creeps at you until you have to put it down and take a deep breath. Lisa Gardner has truly outdone herself in The Next Accident. The two lead characters from The Third Victim are brought back and we see how much and how little their relationship has developed. Pierce Quincy is still a special agent for the FBI and Rainie Conner is getting her life back together and opening up her own private investigating office. Quincy is confronted with a family tragedy when his oldest daughter who had seemly conquered a drinking problem is involved in a terrible accident that leaves her brain dead. When Quincy's ex-wife, Bethie agrees to take their daughter Amanda off life support you would think they would be able to get on with their lives. But for some reason Quincy can't believe the wreck was an accident. He goes to Rainie and hires her to investigate and perhaps open the door to continue their relationship. As Rainie begins to dig into the circumstances surrounding Amanda's wreck, she begins to unravel little details that don't make sense. Then Quincy begins to receive hundred of terrorizing calls from men that he has either put away in prison or from those who just plain hate the FBI. Someone has given out his personal phone number and address. In fact, someone is methodically assuming his identity and destroying his creditability. The killer is cunning and brilliant. He finds out everything about Quincy's life and those who are important to him. Then he selects his next victim. He stalks his victims learning every detail about their lives. He becomes whatever it is they desire. Unfortunately, what they desire often leads to death with the blame being laid at Quincy's feet. This is one nerve-racking book. The story line just flows, the suspense just keeps on building, and the characters are dynamic with well round emotions. If you love suspense, don't mind being scared, then this book should be right up your alley. I have to say, I love suspense and can usually figure out who the bad guys are by the middle of the book. Not this time. Ms. Gardner has written a fascinating tale of chilling suspense that had me guessing the entire time.
Rating: Summary: Loved! Review: This book was excellent, after reading the third victim, I was dying to read this. It was so fun reading, I could hardly put it down, I should be mad at these authors for making such great books that keep me from sleeping! Would recommend this to anyone!
Rating: Summary: Amazingly amazing Review: This book was excellent. If you read the, Third Victim, and fell in love with Raine, then you'll go crazy in this book as well. Raine and Quicy's characters are developed and we're introduced to Quicy's daughter, Kimberly. Plenty of twist and turns. This book will leave you hungering for more. Though I was able to figure out the vilans, I was captivated at how Ms. Gardner was going to tie it all together. This book will make you miss your train stop, keep you awake at night and spend your lunch break reading instead of eating
Rating: Summary: Taut.....Riveting......Suspenseful Review: This is one of those books that you just can't put down. The author has made sure you are invested in these characters with her previous books and, thus, she can jump right in with the story. FBI SupSpAg Pierce Quincy's family is being diabolically murdered - one by one - by an enemy from his past. The problem is there are too many enemies and too little time to protect everyone he cares about. He calls on the help of Rainie Conner (former police officer and former lover) to assist him while his world falls apart around him. Gone is Pierce Quincy's characteristic control in this novel; now he is the victim that we have often seen him help in Ms. Gardner's previous novels. Putting their lives on the lines, Quincy, his remaining daughter, and Rainie fight back, and Quincy learns a lesson about what's important in life. Perhaps the storyline may be confusing for those readers who have not read Ms. Gardner's previous books(all of which I recommend with a warning that The Third Victim involves particularly difficult and dark subject matter). However, this book is quite good. It reads even better than newer novels by Sandra Brown and Tami Hoag...maybe even John Sandford. Lisa Gardner is going to be around for awhile. I highly recommend this book to mystery/thriller readers everywhere.
Rating: Summary: A Great Suspense Story Review: This was a fast paced page turning story. Ms. Gardner is the queen of keeping you glued to the pages with twists and turns, murder, and a little romance on the side. This was also my first time reading this author and I must say it won't be my last! FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy is being stalked by a killer. His family is being butchered and he must find the one clue that will bring an end to the killing. He askes Ex-Cop and friend Rainie Conner to help him investigate his first daughters death. He is convinced that she did not kill herself in a car accident. Rainie is tough, sweet, and has her own baggage and the history between these two is part of that. (this is from Ms, Gardners other novel The Third Victim) She still goes back to Virginia to investigate the car accident and finds out things are not as they seem. Don't pick up this book unless you have plenty of time to read. I had a hard time putting it down. Ms. Gardner keeps you guessing until the very end of the book as to who is the killer and why he is killing. Don't pick this book up if you think there is a strong romance. The romance is really a background story. Still in all I am going to go back and read some of this authors older books.
