Rating: 5 stars
Summary: I nominate this one for the annual Edgar award!
Review: "She understood the worst men could do, and she no longer considered anything to be too cruel to happen. Most people thought murderers killed out of some sort of necessity. Those were the easy cases. Far worse were psychopaths who considered murder to be not only a hobby but a recreational
sport."--From chap. 13

Lisa Gardner, the author of ten romance novels, has switched genres. Following up three successful suspense novels (THE PERFECT HUSBAND, THE OTHER DAUGHTER, and THE THIRD VICTIM), she now offers THE NEXT ACCIDENT as her hardcover debut.

A twisted "mystery man" has a grudge against Special Agent Pierce Quincy of the FBI. In a plot reminiscent of Agatha Christie's TEN LITTLE INDIANS/AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, the psychopath is systematically killing those near and dear to Quincy.

Quincy employs a private investigator, Lorraine Conner, to help him stop the killing game. Quincy's two daughters, Amanda and Kimberly, are at risk, as are Quincy's father and ex-wife, as well as other innocent people.

The sociopath, whose identity is not revealed until the penultimate chapter, has a keen intelligence, much like Sherlock Holmes's archenemy, Professor Moriarty. A specialist in psychological warfare, he is also a master of disguise.

In this fast-paced, pulse-pounding tale, the action shifts back and forth from Portland, Oregon, to Quantico, Virginia, Philadelphia, and New York City.

So many books of this kind are long on promise, but short on delivery. This one fulfils its promise; it does not let us down at the end.

If you are looking for tale of heart-stopping terror, forget about Stephen King and Dean Koontz and read Lisa Gardner. This one is a zinger!

Summary: A good read
Review: After 3 Top Reviewers give The Last Accident 5 stars, I feel guilty. This was a good read. But I guess I should have read the Third Victum first. This was my firt Lisa Gardner book. After Dennis Lehane and Robert Crais, I did not think this book rated 5 stars! I thought the romance was a litte lame but for a first hard cover mystery it was good. I could put the book down after each chapter though and that is not a good indication for me that the book kept me on my toes. But who am I to argue with Top Reviewers!

Summary: Not As Expected
Review: After reading other reviews, I purchased this book. I find it to drag quite often. It does NOT keep one turning pages. Very disappointing book.

Summary: Perhaps Gardner's Best Work to Date
Review: Amanda Quincy watches the telephone pole rushing toward her. She can't escape it. Her Explorer's just one step away from crashing to a deadly halt.

FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy suspects his daughter's death is no accident. He's haunted by the inconsistencies behind Amanda's final moments of life.

Only one person can find out the truth. But she harbors her own ghosts from the past. And they include unanswered questions regarding her relationship with Pierce.

Rainie Conner reluctantly accepts Pierce's case. After being charged with first-degree murder, her new career as a P.I. has left her with a pile of unpaid bills.

Just when Rainie uncovers disturbing evidence in Amanda's totalled SUV, another woman in Pierce's life turns up dead. A killer's closing in and all evidence points to someone on the inside. Someone close to the victims.

No one, not even the FBI, knows who. And no one knows why.

One thing's for sure, though. Anyone close to Pierce Quincy could become The Next Accident.

Lisa Gardner continues her bestselling success with this suspense thriller. The Next Accident is nothing short of a plot maze that will leave you racing toward a shocking conclusion.

Summary: Plotting At Its Best
Review: An ingenious psychopath has assumed the identity of Quantico's best profiler: FBI superstar Pierce Quincy. With chilling brilliance, the impostor then begins to murder Quincy's nearest and dearest--one by one.

A desperate battle of wits ensues as Quincy, nearly undone by horror and grief, and suspected by his own comrades as a possible suspect, strains to end the game before the predator murders his final quarry: Quincy's only surviving daughter Kimberly.

Quincy's love interest, the enigmatic, hard-as-nails private investigator Raine Connor, tries to help while battling her own demons, which are hitting much too close to home for her own comfort.

All of this makes for a fast-paced, well-plotted page turner--a book that is almost impossible to put down. The suspense lasts until the last pages, and to this reader, at least, the identity of the killer came as a complete surprise.

My only criticism of the book, the first I have read by Lisa Gardner, is that it seemed to have been written at breakneck speed. I found myself distracted and annoyed from time to time by grammatical mistakes that urbane Pierce Quincy would never make, for instance. The writing at times is sloppy, almost as if Gardner could not type fast enough to keep up with her own thoughts. The end is a good example, as Gardner ties up all the loose ends in one incoherent chapter that has so much information, I had to read it twice.

That having been said, I still recommend this book. The killer's game is finely rendered and absolutely believable, and Raine and Quincy make a dynamic team.

Summary: Great Plot
Review: FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy suspects his daughter's death was not the result of drinking and driving, but foul play. He hires novice investigator Rainie Conner to look into the matter for him, which seems to open up a hornet's nest. After Pierce's ex-wife is murdered, Rainie believes that the women close to Pierce are being targeted by a psychopath intent on seeking revenge against Pierce.

This is the first book I've read by Lisa Gardner, and I am so pleased to have found a new mystery author to read. The plot was great, full of twists and turns. Great book!

Summary: A Five Star Thriller I Couldn¿t Put Down
Review: FBI Special Agent Pierce Quincy's oldest daughter, a recovering alcoholic, is fatally injured in an auto accident, apparently she had been drinking, but Quincy has doubts. Almost a year later he's still not satisfied with the official explanation for his daughter's death, so he contacts an old girlfriend, ex-cop turned private eye Rainie Conner, to investigate the accident. What Quincy doesn't know is that a vengeful killer has targeted him and is determined to kill everyone he loves, including his ex-wife, his other daughter, his aging father and then, when everyone he cares about is gone, Quincy himself.

The mysterious killers seems to be always just a step ahead of Quincy and Rainie in this five star thriller that I couldn't put down.
