Summary: To me, this was a gripping and a real page turner.
Review: I read some of the other reviews and am at a loss when I see others rate it as boring.

From the first page as Charlotte wakes up thinking she is in a coffin, until the little boy, Leo, is back with his parents, the author has the ability to maintain the suspense and interest by the progression of intricate steps the detectives take. It is always fascinating to realize the body of knowlwge and depth of research the author has done because his/her story must contain as much authentiticy and accuracy of forensnic procedures and scientific results. And, in this case , a knowlege of power play in politics and the work place Ms George has written a story with a variety of characters and personalities. She has a good grasp of human nature and humorous behavior of people and domestic animals.

I agree that her detectives have rather dull personalities. But this keeps them from overpowering and deflecting attention from her characters. The characters were not very likable, but where is it written that we always have to be in love with them all the time?

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I read it day and nigh for 2 days!

Summary: THRILLING!
Review: I had never heard of Elizabeth George until this book fell into my hands as a birthday present. Now, I'm sold and I'm already saving money to buy a new book. The best part in her books is the unespecting end. I like books where you can guess and speculate; WHO, and WHY. READ THIS BOOK!

Summary: It is a page turner that will keep you up late.
Review: In the Presence of the Enemy is one of the best books I have read in recent memory. It offers a unique twist, the characters are interesting and sound, and it is as close to perfect as a British mystery can get. I highly reccommend this book.

Summary: Suspensful, powerful and provoking
Review: Reading Elizabeth George is always a pleasure, but her this novel is disturbingly so. If you like your characters predictable and bland, read something else. "In the Presence of the Enemy", the characters will make you angry, baffled and you may even weep. George's tight weave between the kidnapping of a child, politics, London's tabloid press and crime detail is masterful. She writes with a style that makes one become enmeshed in the thoughts, feelings and actions of her characters. This is no mere story-telling. I grew to scorn the Junior Minister, Eva Bowen; wept for Charlie; wanted to have Leo for a son; fair liked to have slapped Corrine silly.I was dead wrong as to the identity of the murderer until the name was announced, something rare for a reader of more ho-hum novels than masterpieces. This story will stay with me for quite some time. Until the next Elizabeth George novel captures my attention.

Summary: A great introduction
Review: This was my first Elizabeth George novel and it was a great introduction. This book had a great plot, even better characters, and a nice twist at the end. Her words flow easily, and she has a good set of regular characters who are believeably human. They made me want to read her other novels to find out some more history on them. The story was fast-paced, with twists and turns the whole way through. A good read for anyone who enjoys a well-written suspense novel.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: After reading the glowing reviews for this book, I was expecting a good story. The only thing I liked about this book was the feeling of hard earned accomplishment I felt when I finally finished it. It's an overly long convoluted tale with few likable characters. On the cover of this book, Elizabeth George was compared to P.D. James which I believe is a gross injustice to James

Summary: A big disapointment!
Review: The first few chapters are a sure cure for insomnia. After you get through the first half of the book it isn't to bad. The first half of the book could have been done in a chapter or two. I doubt that I will try another of her books

Summary: I hope no one purchased the movie rights!
Review: There are more holes in this story than there are on the average New York city street. Sure, the characters have a lot of depth to them, but they also all lack one common ingrediant: common sense. Lynley is boring and dumb. He can't solve crap. Don't be discouraged if you can't figure out who did it. Not even Sherlock Holmes could. There are simply not enough clues and the ending defies all logic and rationale. And why the hell was there a map in the book? If George is the next PD James, I'm Tiger Woods

Summary: Good characters and suspenseful ending
Review: In this installment of the Lynley-Havers series, Elizabeth George has created an interesting situation involving kidnapping and murder. I definitely felt the pace of the novel picked up after Lynley and Havers were assigned to the case. These two characters are much more fully developed than the others (Helen, Deborah, Simon). In particular, Barbara Havers comes alive and is a unique individual. The last section of the book was quite a page-turner; I stayed up into the wee hours to finish the book. I've read all of George's novels and this one ranks quite among her best. If you like British police procedurals with strong characters and surprise endings, you'll enjoy In the Presence of the Enemy

Summary: Don't Waste Your Time
Review: I read this book because it was chosen by my local newspaper as their book of the month. The people responsible for picking this book must be a bunch of sadists. It was a painful experience for me to finish it, but I felt I had to if I was going to comment on it. There have been a few favorable comments so far which really surprises me. I think they must be people who just love anything British. (There's a word for that but it escapes me at the moment) There are so many good writers out there that do the British thing well, don't waste your time with this pretender
