Summary: Disappointed
Review: This was the first Scottoline novel that I have ever read. I selected it based on reviews, and I expected it to be a "jaw dropping" mystery/suspense novel. Overall, I felt that the characters lacked depth and the story line, particularly the ending, was too "contrived." If you want a quick read, go ahead and buy it, but I suggest waiting for the paperback edition or, better yet, borrow it from the library.

Summary: Go Mary!
Review: Timid and sometimes aloof Mary gets a case of her own and immediately doubts her client. Join Lisa Scottoline for a great story... Great characters and I really like how she includes Mary's family into the story line!

Summary: Great Book!
Review: This is the first Lisa Scottoline book I have read and I loved it! I liked her characters, expecially Mary, and her character development. I found the plot to be complex enough to be believable. Its not a heavy-duty legal thriller, i.e., an interesting book but with so many different names, roles and agendas that you have to keep a list. Moment of Truth is a good mystery - with an interesting plot, terrific characters, well written and suspenseful. I will definitely read her other books.

Summary: PAINFUL read
Review: I'm not exactly sure why I didn't give up on this book after the first few chapters. I think I was interested to see how ridiculous it would get. Detailed in all the wrong places and just plain silly in most others. Please don't make the same mistake I made - choose a different book!

Summary: Engaging writing revives tired plot
Review: An engaging protagonist and an ability to connect with the reader lifts Edgar-award winner ("Final Appeal") Scottoline's latest legal thriller out of the humdrum ranks of murder among the rich and dysfunctional.

>From the first page we know that Jack Newlin, wealthy estate lawyer, has framed himself for the murder of his wife in order to save his teenage daughter. Switching to the daughter, 16 and pregnant, we learn that she has indeed killed her mother, in a drugged-out rage, with the help or at least knowledge of her sleazy, drug-dealing boyfriend.

Newlin hires inexperienced Mary DiNunzio who not only recognizes his innocence but begins to develop a crush on her client. Mary's close-knit Italian-Catholic family, though riddled with cliches, serves as a warm contrast to the arid polarity of the Newlins.

The police embrace Jack's confession wholeheartedly - all but one, a somber black detective - and the overzealous DA decides to go for the death penalty. It's up to Mary to save the man who wants to give his life for his sins as a parent.

Obviously there are surprises or there wouldn't be a story. And Mary's energy draws out vulnerabilities in the spoiled, gorgeous daughter and the man whose life was on hold, apparently, during the whole of his marriage.

Summary: Superficial at Best
Review: There is absolutely no depth to this story. One wonders how the murder was solved because each character appeared to be more ignorant and bumbling than the last. I believe all female defense attorneys are probably thoroughly disgusted with Scottoline's character "Mary" (who appears to be a total ditz), and I doubt police detectives, portrayed as too stupid to be believed, are happy with this story either. This is my first time reading Scottoline, and probably my last. If this book hadn't been recommended and loaned to me to read, I would have thrown it out in frustration!

Summary: Be warned...this is not a good read!
Review:

I have enjoyed most of this author's previous books, but this one felt "phoned in."

I never bought into the story, didn't care for the characters, and saw through the entire scenario after the first 50 pages.

I wish promising authors weren't pushed to publish and could take their time to develop plots and characters we can enjoy.

This book was a waste of my time and I won't be asking the library to hold anymore of her volumes for me. My spare time is too precious to waste on such nonsense.

Summary: A PAGE-TURNING LEGAL THRILLER
Review: Jack Newlin is a lawyer in a prestigious Philadelphia firm, he has also confessed to murdering his wife...To ensure his conviction he hires inexperienced lawyer Mary DiNunzio. Mary knows her client is lying but WHY??? Mary sets out to prove her client is innocent and bring the the real killer to justice. Lisa Scottoline has written a fast paced legal thriller with enough plot twists and surprise ending to have you finish the book in one sitting. Scottoline has been called "The Female John Grisham", I have to say she is MUCH better!! If you have not read any of her books start with this one and then go back and read her earlier novels.

Summary: Page turner
Review: I read this book in one day - had no desire to do anything else. It held my interest, was direct and to the point, there is no beating around the bush with words, the twists and turns created by the author to reach the end are insatiable.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: author comes into her own
Review: This is the best book I've read by this author. Benny needs to stay "out-of-town"! Mary is a more interesting character to focus on. Her family background and her Catholic-induced guilt just really give her view of being a lawyer a different twist. This book has many different surprises and just when you think you have it figured out, you don't!
