Summary: Interesting villains can't save a bland heroine or plot.
Review: NOTE--this review goes heavy on the spoilers. If you haven't read ENVY yet, read this review at your own risk.

***

This was my first Sandra Brown novel, a Christmas present. And yes, I'm already done. I read quite fast.

I have to say that I found our main protagonist, Maris Matherly-Reed, to be quite two-dimensional. Whenever one of the villains did something, I tried to guess what her reaction would be, and I was always right. This should not be so in a mystery novel. She was also too perfect, capable of doing no wrong. I like my heroes and heroines flawed.

And the plot of the book is terribly worn out. "Guy that wants revenge is softened by beautiful woman?" No offense, Ms. Brown, but it has been done. Furthermore, she seems to change the plot halfway through. Originally it seems as if Parker's whole intent is to get revenge on Maris, but later his target changes to Noah.

Still, this novel was not without its good points--its villains and/or supporting characters. My favorite kind of characters are the cunning, scheming kind, and watching Daniel, Noah, and Parker all struggle to out-scheme one another was pure delight. In the end, Nadia was a bit more three-dimensional then she'd seemed. And Mike Strother simply stole the book.

Final summary--If you're a Sandra Brown fan and don't have this, you may as well buy it. If not, rent it from the library and give it a read, but you probably won't be checking it out again anytime soon.

Review: The book within a book idea is very creative! Sandra Brown had me clinging to this book, unable to put it down! There was a twist and turn at every corner.

Cannot wait for her next book!

Summary: Pleasant trip
Review: Even though it's pretty obvious where the plot is going, you still have a good time getting there. The bad guys are soooo bad and the good guys are so likeable. Have a good time with this one.

Summary: Best SB book yet!
Review: What more is there to say, except when passed along, it was returned with all in agreement. (We write our brief reviews inside the front cover.)

Having read the 'review guidelines'; even though the book jacket MAY have giving the ending away, having read several Brown book's I was still intrigued to the point of another all-night read. It was well worth the loss of sleep and the jacket DID NOT spoil the ending!

Summary: A Must Read for Sandra Brown Fans
Review: Sandra Brown just gets better and better. When you think you have the ending figured out she twists and turns it again. At first the changes in time are a little confusing but it quickly becomes another part of the spell Brown casts over her readers. I found myself reading until the wee hours. The character development is excellent and always leaving the reader wondering what the next chapter will reveal.

The romance story is steamy but never overwhelms the main plot.
Brown is now at the top of my list of Authors and I am always waiting for her next novel.

Summary: Edgy...Steamy....and completely Fabulous!
Review: When it comes to Sandra Brown, you never have to worry about her delivering a great story, packed with twists and turns. But ENVY tops the charts ! The whole 'book-within-a-book' was masterful. As always, Sandra leaves her reader wondering if the truth really is stranger than fiction with the story of how two friends allowed envy to totally rip their lives apart, and the woman who must be clever enough to wrap together 15 years of loose ends. The insider info on the world of publishing was great to experience, and gives you an overview of what goes on behind the scenes before a book ever reaches your hands. It was informative without being boring. And as always, Sandra's bunch of colorful, strong, and savvy characters will leave you itching for more. Don't wait for the paperback. Grab this one now and ENJOY!!!!

Summary: A Really Great Read!!
Review: This was my first Sandra Brown.....and surely won't be my last. Great plot that kept my attention right down to the end. Only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it contained a couple of graphic sex scenes that really didn't have to go as far as they did. This prevented me from recommending the book to a few of my more conservative friends.....which is a real shame because they would have thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the book.

Summary: Don't need all the explicit sex talk.
Review: I had not read any works by Sandra Brown before, and by recommendation, I thought I would. I was very pleased with her style and character development, but I certainly could have done without the explicit sex talk. While some reference to the matter was essential, a lot more could have been left to the imagination of each reader. I hesitate in recommending it to those whom are offended by such language, but would not disregard it all together. The story was great and the "good guys always finish last" gives a good ending to the whole ordeal.

Summary: Very Good!!
Review: Maris Matherly-Reed is a renowned New York editor and is employed at the family owned publishing company of Matherly Press. She is married to best-selling author Noah Reed. One day while working her way through her slush pile, she discovers the prologue from a manuscript entitled "Envy". Impressed by this unsolicited submission, she feels compelled to track down the author. No easy task since the author identifies himself only as P.M.E. and lists his address as an island off the coast of Georgia.

On an old plantation, she finds the author and comes to understand why he wishes to remain anonymous. Since she is so excited about this prologue, Maris offers to work with Parker as his editor to complete his tale of two friends who charter a boat, along with a woman friend, for a night of celebration--from which only one person returns.

Working closely with Parker, Maris discovers that she is wildly attracted to him and is convinced that his story is more than just fiction. When tragedy strikes close to home, Maris becomes suspicious and searches for the truth about a crime committed fourteen years earlier.

Sandra Brown recently celebrated her twentieth year as a published author. Congratulations Sandra! During those twenty years I have been a devoted fan. Some of her novels are very good and some are simply ok, but whatever the case I will always purchase the hardcover edition as soon as it is released. "Envy" is one of the very good reads. Sandra has cleverly crafted a novel within a novel. This is not a murder mystery to be solved but rather the story of one author's acts of deceit and murder and another author's plan for revenge. Some reviewers have complained about Parker's cruelty, but as the story unfolds, you will understand the reason for his bitterness. Some have complained about the language but I have found the male dialogue to be realistic. All your questions will be answered in the end and you might also find some surprises. This is a very entertaining read and I recommend you get your hands on this novel as soon as you can.
