Rating: Summary: Happens All the Time. Review: It seems astounding that Neville says she wrote this book in the 1980s, it was updated and published in the early 1990s, yet everything described in it is happening again all over the world today. I loved A Calculated Risk so much that I've read it three times (probably for fantasy escapism, since I work in international currency exchange) and I sincerely hope there will be a sequel. My favorite Neville novel!
Rating: Summary: Somebody should tell them about Tandem Computers Review: It was a nice book. But from a former programmer I would have expected something better from the Charles Babbage interface. Do you have any idea how hard it is to write a soft-bound language independent gramatical user interface interpreter? If you write a book where the heroin uses a computer interface it should be backed up by some realistic technical and functional features. Understanding plain english is not one of them. By the way even in the eighties computers existed that were specialized in On Line Transactional Processing that did not needed to be shutdown every night: Tandem Computers.
Rating: Summary: Good read, fast and to the point> Review: Kind of makes you wonder just what is happening with your money, doesn't it. Guess bankers aren't as stuffy and unimaginative as we thought.
Rating: Summary: A Fanatic Review: My sister doesn't like to read much. But one day I left this book (thank God, just finishing it) at her house. Well, she grabed it, read it, and called me: "hey, why you'd never told me how fascinating is to read this woman named Katherine?" I asked her: Ah....this is not her best book...was his first, it was updated during the 90's....but it was written in the 80's. -"You are kidding me". Click.Since then, she became a fanatic. I wont tell you my phone number, but I am sure, that if you read this book, you'll like to call and say: "Hey...thanks".
Rating: Summary: Fascinating Bankers? Amazing Imagination! Review: Some of the bankers who have written in here just serve to demonstrate those attributes that most people think all of us bankers share: lack of imagination, of humor, intelligence, and wit. Luckily, Neville's fun story of cutthroat politics in international finance lacks none of these elements. Some of my fellow bankers could take a few pointers from her zippy style. PS - I worked on the Chips system many years, so I know!
Rating: Summary: Huge Disappointment Review: The Eight is a favorite of mine so I was really looking forward to her next work. It felt like she had to meet a deadline and rushed thru this without doing the research that made The Eight such an enjoyable read. A Calculated Risk is a forgettable caper story.
Rating: Summary: Good book and not out of print Review: This book is an intriguing and well researched suspense thriller. It can be purchased at any bookstore.
Rating: Summary: Give Me A Break Review: This book is even worse than The Eight, which at least had a very interesting plot, plot devices and a host of fun historical characters. This one has a terrible plot and awful characters (actually they are the same ones as in The Eight but with different names). I can't believe Ms. Neville used to work in a bank, her plot device is so incredibly hokey its hard to believe there can be any element of truth or realism in any part of this book.
Rating: Summary: An interesting primer for the financially inclined Review: This is a good introduction for anyone who doesn't know too much about the world of high finance. Neville explains her plot in clear, unambiguous prose.
Would, however, that she could flesh out her characters the way she does her banking terminology. They are all cardboard cutouts, to one degree or another - some of them have a little more personality than others, but it seems that Neville has been working in those cold heartless banks just a little too long.
The three-star rating is for her explanations of financial terms and transactions; her previous book ("The Eight") was far better.
Rating: Summary: A Romantic, Financial Thriller-Fantasy Review: This is a wonderful book which will probably appeal more to women than to men. I especially enjoyed this book as my background is in banking, as is the main character's. I am an American woman, who started as a stockbroker back in the 1970's, when there were few women in the brokerage and banking areas. This book reminds me of what women went through in that time, especially with the "old boys' club" and "glass ceiling" types of problems. Yet this character is able to overcome all of that and pull off an incredibly thrilling finanacial caper. In the background, a romance develops with an absolutely dazzling, incredible man. So many incredible things happen in this book that it absolutely has to be termed a fantasy in addition addition to being a romantic financial thriller. A thoroughly enjoyable "escape" book for every woman who has ever worked in business (or who has ever been frustrated by men's behavior in business). This is the first book I have read by this author, and I hope to read more!
