Summary: Not for the claustrophobic!
Review: This book was good, as are all of Nevada Barr's novels but the cave crawling really gave me the willies. I had a hard time reading parts of it because I just felt SO constricted. That is how good the descriptions are!

I have enjoyed this series and hope it will continue for years to come. Anna Pigeon is a flesh and bone woman with real fears, strengths and weaknesses. This is the most least enjoyed of the series for me (and that's not a bad thing because I still enjoyed it!).

Summary: the best Barr yet
Review: Some of Nevada Barr's earlier books read well as stories but didn't really make it as mysteries: either "whodunnit" was too clear too early, or the reader felt cheated because important clues were not revealed until the denouement. This book works as a mystery, giving the reader (or at least me!) that wonderful "oh, of course!" moment.

The situation is a neat variant on the old locked-room mystery, with only a handful of people who could have committed the initial crime--if indeed there was a crime at all, the only evidence being the testimony of an accident victim who may or may not be able to separate memory from delusion.

Heroine Anna Pigeon's willingness to come to the aid of an injured friend trapped in the bowels of Carlsbad Caverns--the part off-limits to the general public--forces her to wrestle with her own claustrophobia-induced demons. In doing so, she places herself in greater physical peril than in most of the earlier books... or perhaps it just seemed that way to this somewhat claustrophobic reader.

The central character remains one of the more interesting and three-dimensional amateur sleuths around today, and while the supporting cast is not necessarily so well defined (and there are moments when readers who hadn't read the earlier books might have to struggle a little too much to understand relationships), there is a level of elegance to the writing which is not often found in works that have no pretensions to high literature.

This is a well-written novel with an engaging protagonist and a clever plot. Light reading doesn't get much better.

Summary: Enlightened Ascent
Review: In addition to mesmerizing me with an expertly detailed exploration into the literal underworld of our earth, Ms. Barr managed to change my outlook of Carlsbad Caverns, from an obscure place of little interest to me, to a destination at the top of my family vacation list. But does she REALLY expect her readers to believe that a person as cool, sophisticated, educated, and utterly handsome as Curt Schatz, exisits!

Summary: I guess my expectations were too high
Review: I had heard the author interviewed on NPR and was very much interested. But the interview was more entertaining than the actual book. Barr's use of the English language was better than I had expected in a novel such as this, but sometimes I got the feeling she was too impressed with her command of vocabulary and ability to make obscur references. The character development was thin, the outcome predictable, and her feeling for being in a cave unsatisfying. I was just left with the feeling of wanting more.

Summary: Great book nonstop suspence
Review: Blind decent gives the reader a chance to go deep into the earth and chance to see the un song hero's in the NPS.

Summary: the best Nevada Barr book so far!
Review: I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in the Anna Pigeon series but "Blind Descent" is the best of the bunch so far. Barr's books are always interesting and well-written but the previous ones sometimes didn't have quite enough clues with the result that the endings came as a bit of a surprise. "Blind Descent" not only has the requisite number of hints, but they are so skillfully interwoven into the story that you will find yourself thinking, "oh of course" at the end. This is a terrific book, the descriptions of the cave are harrowing, the other characters are well-drawn and intriguing and the pace of the book is fast.

Summary: GREAT BOOK!
Review: Another great story by a great author. Underground adventure at its best. For those that can't bear to step underground, this book is the next best thing to being there. For more underground stories don't miss Steward's "Tales of Dirt, Danger, and Darkness."

Summary: I love this book!
Review: Amazing. Ms. Pigeon is just as fascinating, if not more so, as she was when we first met her in Track of the Cat. Fascinating characters, both lovable and not, and unexpectedly beautiful scenery make this one of my favorite Barr books thus far. For the last two hundred pages I literally could not put it down. Well done Ms. Barr.

Summary: Another hit!!!!
Review: Once again, Nevada Barr has written a winner. This book had me on the edge of my seat during the whole time Anna is underground! I was actually biting my nails. The suspense is great, the details are immaculate and Anna is as likable as ever. I do wish her sister, Mollly, was in it more, but oh well, that's my only "complaint". This may be the best mystery I have read all year long. Try it out, you won't regret it.

Summary: Intriguing...
Review: Much to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found it engrossing, entertaining and suspenseful. I've read about Scarpetta & Warsawski and they're OK at best. Anna Pigeon I like! She's unpretentious, she's interesting, she's smart, she's woman-ish... As my first Nevada Barr read, I have to admit, I'm impressed - and hooked. I'll be reading her again.
