Rating: Summary: Excellent Book and (Sadly) Closer to Truth Than Fiction Review: I found this book both insightful and disturbing. Although it is a work of fiction, much of scene-setting is based on historical fact. Basically, the plot describes how a government that has run amok and violating the Second Amendment rights of its citizens and how some of those citizens react to defend themselves. This would make an excellent film and a great counterpoint to the drivel of "Bowling for Columbine". However, given Hollywood's political bias, the chances of this reaching the 'big screen' are remote at the best.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic and engrossing! Review: The sheer length of this novel seemed daunting at first due to my time constraints. But when I glanced at the Publisher's Weekly review, I had to pick it up. After all, when a reviewer is too obtuse and politically jaded to understand the assault on JUSTICE on the front cover, choosing instead to describe the scene as simply a jack-booted thug assault on a "buxom," partially naked woman, it would be a crime not to examine what got the critic's panties in a wad. The historical glimpse into the roots of gun control fascinated me. It cemented my already-existing views about gun control and its racist, controlling views. It made me understand, in horrific detail, that a society will create its own shackles and gladly don them, gradually, obediently and silently. It made me see that control of the mind and the spirit are ultimate results of gun control. It's not about guns, although taxing and controlling a constitutionally protected basice right is abhorrent to its very core. It's about the subjugation of a populace and the slow, systematic creation of a police state. Unintended Consequences traces this slow, arduous march toward police state tyranny, examining its growth from seed to full-grown oppression. It examines America's "gun culture" and its rape by power-hungry, ignorant politicians. But while the novel is a thought provoking examination of a man pushed too far by tyranny, it's a fast-paced page turner. It's gripping, unabashed, gritty and action-packed. It's a tale of true survival in an America controlled by lies, power, bureaucracy and corruption. Definitely a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down.
Rating: Summary: Great read! Review: The Biased reviewer shown on the main page from Publishers Weekly compares this book to "The Turner Diaries" in an attempt to marginalize the author, the book and it's readers. It's more proof of the left wing bias the "main stream" media has. The biased reviewer doesn't have the courage to review the book so (s)he just stoops to mudslinging. How sad and typical. The book's a great read, pick up a copy and see for yourself!
Rating: Summary: The Case of the Clueless Critic Review: For someone who keys on Unintended Consequences' cover image as "nearly summing it up," the Publishers Weekly critic seems amazingly unable to understand exactly what he's seeing. The "semi-naked, buxom young woman," so-called, is Justice. The white blindfold and robes are what we call "clues."
Rating: Summary: Tell me spirit, are these the shaddows of what will be...? Review: John Ross has taken some of the most important events in the history of gun legislation and overlayed it with a handfull of "ficticious" characters. This novel does an outstaning job of pointing out the absurdity of our gun laws and the 'unintended consequences' of an over reaching government. Throughout the book, I found myself remembering a line from Ebenezer Scrooge during his nightmare - "tell me spirit...are these shaddows of things that might be or that will be?" Any IRS, BATF, FFA, or FBI agents with the nerve to read this book will be asking themselves the same questions. The authors detailed knowledge of firearms, law, politics, history, and the human psyche makes the novel both informative, believable, and entertaining. I give this book my highest recommendation and suggest that it is requried reading for gunnies, IRS agents, politicians, patriots, libertarians and liberty activists. I only wish that it were required reading for law and political science students everywhere.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic read and a potential outcome Review: Mr. Ross has written an outstanding book. The detail will appeal to anyone that wants indepth reserach. The book shows in very clear detail just how out of control some of those in government have become. Honest Americans entrapped, imprisoned, lives ruined. It will really make you think. And it paints a picture of one possible outcome if the Constitution continues to be abused by those who we elected to protect and defend it. The majority of Honest Americans are slow to anger. But continued abuses like the ones outlined here are beginning to be recognized by many in America today. With choices between the two dominant political parties limiting what one can do with their vote, some may see this a very possible result.
Rating: Summary: It Changed My Thinking Review: I'm a pretty conservative guy. I follow rules because I find it comfortable to do so. I stop at stop lights and do a lot of things I would rather not do as well as not doing things I would like to do because I find this an orderly and secure way to live. I do recognize that there are many stupid poorly conceived laws and rules but I still comply. I have never thought about starting a revolution because the trivial moronic little rules and regulations that we are requested to comply with are unreasonable in a free society. But that is the topic of this book. Few books in my life have changed my thinking over the long term. Unintended Consequences did this. This book is about the gun culture. How it began and where it is today. I never never never thought about how not only many of the Federal firearms regulations are but in a more global sense how many of our regulations are ridiculous. This may sound like a vague description of a 800+ page book. But this book is so global. It talks specifically about Henry Bowman who grows up shooting guns as a hobby like many others collect stamps or ride motorcycles. Yet he explains very slowly and methodically how his life experiences with his hobby are hampered unreasonably by Federal regulations. You do not have to be a gun lover or hater to appreciate this book. You only have to have a hobby or passion; any hobby or passion. You will see how our Constitution and Bill of Rights have been beaten and changed, how we are losing our individual rights and how dangerous the repurcussions. Please read this book for the message, it will change you.
Rating: Summary: A life-changing book!! Review: We all remember those events in our life that make memories so sweet: Summers with your parents, riding bikes with friends, your first kiss, first lover, finishing high school and then college. This book was a milestone in my life. Being raised a democrat and generally considering my self an independent, I never really gave much thought to the gun rights and gun control movements. Then, 4 years ago, I picked up a second edition copy of John Ross' masterfully written novel and it changed my life. (I now own a signed first edition as well) He is entertaining and lively in describing the firearm culture and development in the early part of the last century. The life of a young man growing up in this culture and becoming a driving force in the novel. The story is a page turner, and one breezes through this tome in no time. A dramatic chain of events in the lead character's life leads to a near revolution in the country. The ending that has you cheering as the good guys win! Since reading this novel, I have read tens of thousands of pages of political thought, historical record and legal documents and have come to understand just where continued gun control is taking us...it is a place I do not wish to go. In the last four years, I have become a champion for the second amendment rights community, a holder of a federal firearms license , a collector with over 60 firearms, a hobby gunsmith and a lobbyist for the firearms community. All this from a person who voted for Clinton just ten years ago! Get John Ross' book, it will open your eyes.
Rating: Summary: Unintended Consequences Review: This is one of the best books I ever read. This is possibly the only book I ever read where I finished the last page, turned back to the first and read it again. For my own personal enjoyment, I would rank this up there with Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
Rating: Summary: a 'frog being slowly boiled'... Review: I am not sure what I expected when I started reading this HUGE book, but I came away with an education and a sharpened perspective. Unfortunately, I fear the book is too long for most people to read, and it contains some unnecessary sexual and violent content rendering it mostly unsuitable for use in schools. I grew up in the 'gun culture' here in Texas in the 60's and 70's, and while I was aware of the ever increasing federal encroachment on our rights, I am sad to say I was the 'frog being slowly boiled.' After reading Ross's book, I feel like I've been plucked out, cooled off and thrown back in! I recommend everyone over 21 read this book!
