Rating: Summary: Do you treasure your freedom? Review: This book was magnificent. Every American should read this book since it concerns all of us. Even if you are not "into" firearms, you should still read it because it concerns your freedom. I applaud John Ross for his masterpiece.
Rating: Summary: Drags a bit at the start and then takes off like a jet. Review: Started reading the book and found that I couldn't get as involved as most of the people that I had talked to. About 40% of the way through the book, it took off and didn't let up till the last page. I'm a long time gun buff and I learned lots and I also learned lots about the law making practices in the US. Thanks to Ross for a really good read.
Rating: Summary: A Must Read, But Several Problems Review: Besides an entertaining, inspirational plot with colorful characters, Ross gives us many easily digested history and economics lessons, plus loads of detailed info on all types of firearms. The only technical glitch this gun neophyte detected was Henry Bowman's flying a turbojet Citation without a type rating. Were I wealthy enough to own one of those, I wouldn't risk insurance cancellation by letting an uncredentialed pilot fly it, especially when that pilot's trying to keep a low profile! Ross also lets several of his otherwise astute characters depict the 1861-65 (it wasn't "Civil" in any sense of the word!) War in the United States as having been fought over slavery. Oppressive federal taxes caused that Secession and the North's desire to protect its Southern tax base caused the resulting horrible conflict. Slavery, because it is abhorrent, and because the South chose to defend it, was just a very useful issue for rallying Northern support for the invasion of the Confederacy. Constitution-loving people who don't buy the statist gun control B.S. shouldn't swallow the slavery rationale for the War. That said, Ross does a great job showing how well-meaning, but totally misguided people let themselves be used by various opportunists, and eventually have to suffer the consequences of their folly. For this cogent description of the undermining of the U.S. Constitution, UC deserves 5 stars. UC gets only 3 stars from me, though, because of its completely humanistic viewpoint. I think a noble, complex undertaking such as Henry Bowman carries out could only succeed with Divine Guidance. God's hand is there as the events of this book unfold toward its conclusion; it's just never acknowledged. I think UC may well foretell what lies ahead of America. If so, we'll need all God's help we can get, especially when we consider that Ross' fictional President, who eventually does what's right, is an honorable man.
Rating: Summary: Where was the editor? Review: This could have been a very good book. It is well-plotted and well-written,but it is interminably long. The author writes a comprehensive biography of practically every character in the book, giving detailed accounts of actions that occur decades before the events of the main plot and which turn out to have little or no bearing on the story. Mr. Ross knows how to write interesting and realistic scenes, but needs to be reined in. A pity, since the book makes some important points about the tendency of our government to slide toward tyranny. I doubt if many people will expend the effort required to read it.
Rating: Summary: So good it's scary...could easily come to be! Review: Fantastic for its research and accuracy, I learned more than a few things about the illegal nature of the present gun laws and how they got to the point they are today. The last part is a prophesy of what may happen, and it's not at all far fetched. Should be required reading for all legislators!
Rating: Summary: A great Read and a sad commentary on the state of our Rights Review: Wonderful book, could not put the thing down. I notice that most who have ranked it poorly have done so because they disagree with it's philosophy rather than it's merit as literature. Some will go to great lengths to squash things they done agree with. The book was very long, but after reading it I did not feel like there were ant loose ends, all subplots were explored to length. I thought the sex scenes were PERHAPS a bit overdone, but not enough to warrant a lower rating. I loved it, and agree with it. Do yourself a favor, READ THIS BOOK>
Rating: Summary: Fantastic but the ending is a bit rushed. Review: Most of the events listed as historical did actually happen. This book details the tyranny that our government has become but thru a novel. Very good reading. You flat out won't want to put this book down.
Rating: Summary: It's time to feed the hogs! Review: A fantastic description of the United States we live in today. Mr. Ross's book should be required reading in the schools and by elected officials at every level of government.
Rating: Summary: Turn off your TV! Review: And read a book! You could do worse than to start with this one. I found it fascinating and disturbing, also violent, but no more violent than what was served upon the residents of Waco and Ruby Ridge. I am firmly of the opinion that all responsible citizens should not be interfered with in their right to own and bear arms and that the ATF obviously is not in the category of responsible citizens. My only complaint is that Mr. Ross fails to illustrate WHY the country is falling under ever-increasing Federal power. What is driving the abandonment of our Constitutional Republic? Maybe it doesn't matter, as the mere existence of a faceless lust for power is enough to build a plot. Still, follow the money...
Rating: Summary: All persons who value freedom need to read this book! Review: This is an amazing book. Everyone who considers themself an American citizen needs to read it. I read it in 24 hours at the expense of everything else. It will make you angry, but the ultimate goal I think is to make you determined ... DO SOMETHING! Don't let this happen to us.
