Summary: Main character is not believable
Review: The story line is a good one. The characters, especially Bess could not exist in the real world--someone would have throttled her at first mouth opening. People just do not speak as these characters do.

Summary: Engrossing Read
Review: I was hooked from the first page. But... This story was very like Andromeda Strain, which is okay. There were some problems despite the book's ability to hold my interest.

The characters didn't always react as one would expect, and often moved through the story rather woodenly. Bear in mind that people who witness or are themselves victims of great tragedy sometimes withdraw from an outward display of emotions, which is hard to depict when writing without making the characters seem depthless. Some serious introspection into how our hero and heroine were feeling about each other was needed here.

Readers who are expecting a romance are bound to be disappointed, because this was a mainstream book, obviously, not a romance. Viewed as a mainstream, it's not bad, but I know Iris can do better next time.

My hat's off to Iris Johansen. She still produced an engrossing story, even though it could have been fleshed out more in places. There are some interesting twists in this storyline.

I was more than a little annoyed that a hero was allowed to punch our heroine's lights out and then never have to atone or feel remorse or apologize. Abusive men make lousy (impossible) heroes. The heroine had far too much power over these men without there being adequate justification. This element was too much of a stretch for my belief system.

It's nevertheless a book I'd read again. And isn't that saying something?

Summary: enjoyable book
Review: Maybe not the best mystery I've ever read, but it's a good book. The story was good, the characters could have been a little more interesting, but the book was worth reading.......not a waste of time.

Summary: Terrible!
Review: I loved her other books, so I bought the hardcover when it came out. It was so bad that I actually wrote a letter to the publisher. I'm convinced they hired a ghost writer - this can't be the same author -- there is no convincing plot, the dialogue is laughable, the characters are unbelievable. And I'm really wondering about the people who thought this was a good book...

Summary: A pleasant surprise
Review: I enjoy most mystery-thrillers, and I had never heard of this author. But, sitting at the airport, waiting for my plane, I picked up this book because it looked interesting. I was pleasantly surprised. I had a hard time putting this book down, and enjoyed all the twists and turns the author put the characters through. Thank you!

Summary: good
Review: This was the first book I read by Iris Johansen and by what I have read from this book I think I well be reading many more of her books. This book is a about a woman (Bess) who takes pictures of things that are scary and her and her sister was going on a trip mexico. Her sister was a doctor and was going because they had not seen each other in a long time. So they was not expacting to hav4e to take scary pictures. They thought they was going to take pictures of churchs and stuff like that. To find out what happens read this book.So read this book it's very good

Summary: Great book. It has a little bit of everything in it!!
Review: I started reading this book at eight one night and couldn't put it down! I read it cover to cover that same night!!

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A page-turner; a not-to-be-put-down-until-done book ...
Review: I was mildly surprised that I picked this book up to read but the synopsis whetted my appetite... then I was genuinely amazed at how much I enjoyed the book - I am not usually into 'romantic mysteries' and this was more a 'thriller' than a 'mystery' but nevertheless, this made for an entertaining, edge-of-the-seat read... Johansen is now on my 'wanted author' list.

Summary: A disappointment
Review: Save your hard earned cash. This book was a disappointment from page one. I admit, I did find the story line to be intriguing, but the characters were poorly written. Bess was uninteresting, and time and time again I thought if I were there, I'd wring her neck. The only reason I didn't give this one star is that I did become a little interested in the end and actually finished the bok. I can't tell how many times I put it down with no intention of finishing it. I'm glad I waited for the paperback.
