Summary: Absolutely corking!
Review: This was a great WW2 novel. It deals with a Tom Jericho, British cryptanalysist, some who deciphers codes, who has suffered a nervous breakdown, and is then re-assigned his post in discovering the code of the U-boat Enigma, a coding maching. When Tom discovers his ex-girlfriend is missing he becomes suspicious and starts looking for clues of her dissapereance. Very hard to explain without giving anything away, so all i have to say is that if you love half-mystery WW2 novels, you will love this novel. Not Jack Higgins WW2 warfare, but a mystery within an enrapturing outside plot

Summary: Great thriller!
Review: Enigma is one of those books, like Harris' other novels, that can not be put down until completion.

The novel tells the story (a relatively unknown one at that) of the codebreakers at Blechley Park during the Second World War. Unbeknownst to the German Army, the British and their Allies had the means to decode secret message traffic using a captured "code making" machine called the Enigma. The novel shows the life of the codebreakers and their race to stay one step ahead of Germans (without letting them know they have the Enigma machine). Also, Harris gives us a glimpse of life during the War, where suspicion and paranoia (some of it justified) were as commonplace as patriotism and nationalistic pride.

Highly recommended to those readers that enjoy a good thriller or historical novel...

Summary: Enigma is a well wrapped mystery
Review: Of the three books by Harris which I have read, Fatherland and Archangel seem to fall flat by the time one gets to the end. Not Enigma. Enigma is everything the other two aren't. Both Fatherland and Archangel work on fictional premises based upon the asking of an historical "what if?" While interesting stories in themselves they lose their believability factor by the time one reaches the end of the books...which is disappointing for premises which start out with such great promise. Enigma on the other hand, is firmly based on actual history which is adroitly fictionalized. This is where the author succeeds in working his characters around already well known history. This and the well drawn characters make for what I believe is Harris' most satisfying offering to date. Enigma is indeed a well wrapped mystery.

Summary: A New Spy Novel Without the Spy
Review: Robert Harris has crafted a great story in his follow-up to "Fatherland." But Harris, a Harvard professor, shuld know how to create the plot and mold the characters that together make a good story. He has added a new element to his mystery, just as he did with "Fatherland." "Enigma" tales a story of British Allied espionage during WWII, but the spy is removed as the main character. Instead the writer focuses on Jericho, a codebreaker for the Allies, and drapes a mystery about discovering a German spy in the background. The great writing weilds enough strength to make a good book on its own, but the added elements make the book more interesting and give the book an excellent rating.

Summary: Anticlimactic ending
Review: When I first picked up this book, I thought the main focus would be on actually cracking the Enigma code. However, as the books starts, we learn that the Enigma code has already been cracked, but that the Germans have changed the key for one of the smaller portions of it. Thus, the code for the U-boats is no longer known. Unfortunately, this also is not the main thrust of the book.

As it turns out, the main plot is trying to uncover the traitor within the system. Once I got over that initial disappointment, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Robert Harris knows how to grab a reader's attention and then keep it. I finished this book in two nights...I just had to see how it ended. That was the only letdown.

After all the intrigue and adrenalin, the ending seemed anticlimactic. Although it was pretty well wound up, I just felt kind of flat after finishing. "That's it?" was my first reaction. I couldn't understand why he'd ended the book that way. Oh well...his prerogative, I guess. Still, it was a very good book. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Another good one from Harris
Review: Once again, Robert Harris's skilful blending of fiction and history has produced another page-turner. "Enigma" is a powerful thriller, packed with suspense and plot-twists. It's also a very vibrant portrait of war-time Britain, with the black-out, food rationing and all those stiff upper lips. The characters are believable and the whole book pays a wonderful tribute to all those unknown men and women who helped win the war.

Summary: The BEST book ever!
Review: I REEAALLY loved this book, given to me by a friend! It's really exiting, and keeps the reader's attention right until the end. The characters are very real, and the book is colourfully written. A definate must for any bookshelf, 10/10!

Summary: Extremely Enjoyable Read!
Review: Don't let the technical aspects of cryptology throw you off. This is an extremely interesting yarn! Throws a great deal of light on what had been a obscure subject. The ending is totally unexpected. Enjoy!

Summary: Enjoyable thriller with interesting characters.
Review: I enjoyed this book immensely & thought it was even better than FATHERLAND. All the code stuff is not too technical for the average reader, or, if it is, you can just skim it. The story itself will carry you along. The characters of Tom & Hester are appealing. It is not easy to make such eccentric characters easy for the reader to identify with but Harris has done it. Also, an excellent recreation of the atmosphere at Bletchley.

Summary: Truly excellent story - and absolutely believable.
Review: What really held my attention was the accuracy of the depiction of the cryptanalytical process. This is a perfect companion to the biography of Alan Turing (also subtitled Enigma), or the BBC documentary "Station X". This book begs to be made into a BBC drama series. It'll be as big as Tinker Tailor. (Spot the Stephen Fry role!)
