Rating: Summary: Reviewing without reading Review: Although I am the author of IF SHE SHOULD DIE, I think I should be entitled to comment on the scathing remarks made by an anonymous contributor on July 8. I find it hard to believe this person has the nerve to call a book garbage, along with a number of other unflattering names, when they admit they haven't even read the book. Call me naive, but I believe you should read a book before offering a review.
I offer a rating of four stars only because a rating is required.
Rating: Summary: For Those Who Don't Like a Simple Whodunit Review: A good, solid mystery. The characters are well developed and the tone of the book is good. You won't automatically figure out the guilty party, but the person seems to be pulled out of nowhere.

Rating: Summary: A Page-Turner Review: Carlene Thompson always writes thrillers with complex psychological plots and engaging characters. She has done it again with IF SHE SHOULD DIE. Christine Ireland never got along with Dara Prince, the daughter of the man who took in Christine and her mentally challenged brother Jeremy after the death of their parents. However, she never hated the wild and mysterious Dara, although Dara resented Christine. Then, in her late teens, Dara disappeared. She had threatened to run away many times, and most people in town weren't surprised. But Christine always had the feeling that harm had come to Dara. Her fears are confirmed when a body later identified as Dara washes ashore during a flood of the Ohio River. Christine, along with Deputy Sheriff Michael Winter, delves into the case and discovers that Dara had another reason for wanting to leave town beside boredom and resentment of Christine and her brother. Dara feared for her life. And the deeper Christine investigates the life of Dara, the more she begins to fear for her life, also. Thompson has created some characters that are likeable, some that are unlikeable, but all are complex. She also includes twists in the story that kept me guessing about the identity of the killer until the exciting conclusion. Thompson fans will not be disappointed with this book. I can't wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: Master of twists and turns! Review: Carlene Thompson is a master of suspense. She creates characters that you really "get to know". I have probably read every one of her books, and I am always surprised at the end. I hope that she keeps the books coming!

Rating: Summary: Good Review: I found this book extremely boring. All characters were painfully one-dimensional and I just couldn't bring myself to care about anybody there. The little lovestory (Christine and the Deputy) made me laugh. it was sooo weak....the book was too long and there were too many characters in there. This has been my last book with this author.
Rating: Summary: Thompson's Complex Plot Review: I found this book to be one of Thompson's most complex and interesting books. She creates a tale of a girl missing for years whose body turns up wrapped in plastic after a flood in the Ohio River. Shortly afterward, Dara's diary is found, giving clues as to who might have killed her. Christine Ireland, a woman who knew Dara and found the diary, sets out to find the killer, therefore putting her own life in danger. Christine's dilemna lies in the fact that she learns too late that the finding of the diary has also jeopardized the safety of her mentally challenged brother, Jeremy. Luckily, Thompson walks a fine line in characterizing Jeremy. While he is "slow," with an IQ of 70, he is not "cutsy" nor helpless. Think Forrest Gump--stong and skilled in some ways, childlike in others. I admit to being an avid fan of Thompson's, and in this book, I feel she has not only created a dark and haunting story, but several unforgettable characters.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly Disappointing Review: I have read all of Carlene Thompson's previous books and loved each one of them. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about this book. Ms. Thompson's usual page turning supsense writing was not evident in this book. Characters were introduced and then almost forgotten. Can someone tell me how and why people like Streak Archer, Rey, Patricia and Deputy William's ex-wife are even involved in this book at all? The entire book was boring. The preface of this book was that the main character, Christine, finds the diary of her guardian's dead daughter, Dara and then proceeds to delve into Dara's mysterious past. However, Christine never does delve into the past. But someone begins to stalk and attack her, why? No one in the book comes close to figuring out who the murderer is, but the murderer for some reason starts killing different characters. It seemed that Ms. Thompson may have been confused or disgusted with her own book based on the hasty and uneventful ending. Usually a story ties together and a reader can understand the events that led up to the climatic ending. However, there are no chain of events that even begin to explain what leds up to the ending, and the ending only makes you wonder why you stuck with the book at all. I still look foward to any future books that Ms. Thompson publishes, I just hope that this disappointing book was just a fluke.
Rating: Summary: A Classic Review: I have read all of her books, none are predictable. I could not put this book down. I am offended by those you call this part of her collection as mediocre. Far from it! She just gets better and better. I love the way she describes her characters and the community. I feel drawn in. I believe that is Carlene's goal. Thank you again for a great Read.
