Review: It's been over a year since I have read this book and it is still fresh in my mind as one of my all time favorite stories. It seems this book elicits strong feelings of like or dislike. For me, I LOVED IT. The heroine is a very sympathetic character - an ordinary and unself-assured woman transformed into something more - beautiful, strong, self-confident - through terrible tragedy. I can't remember the last time I cried reading a novel. Judge for yourself and read it.

Summary: Good mystery, bad romance
Review: This is a GREAT suspense/mystery book to read. It will keep you turning page after page for hours. However, I gave this novel 4 stars because Iris Johansen writes romance in this book which is clearly terrible. I don't read romance so maybe that's why I don't care for it but I think that some (2 in particular) romance scenes were completely bizzare and unprofessional. However, this book is a great suspense, with great character development in Nell, and her revenge to catch the killer.

Review: I read it in 1 1/2 days. I loved Ness' character and how she went from being shy and easily dominated to a strong, confident woman.It's a great story and and it is wonderfully told. I can't wait for the next book!

Review: The Ugly Duckling is the best book I have ever read. I strongly recommend it to anyone who loves to read suspense thrillers with romance wrapped inside. It has plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing and you will love the characters.

Review: I really didn't like this book. I have read many of Iris Johansen books and I have noticed they are all similar. Same story, different details. I couldn't stand it! I got to the last chapter, I was so disgusted I said I don't even want to find out the ending! Maybe you will like it but it wasn't for me!

Review: I have long been a fan of Ms. Johansen's historical romances, so I was interested in reading The Ugly Duckling. From the first teasers I saw, I thought it would just be a contemporary novel. What a surprise when I found out that she was changing genres and had written a pure Suspense novel. The Romance that I have loved her previous novels for was completely missing! So, it wasn't what I thought it would be, but it wasn't too bad for her first attempt. Her determination and training were interesting, although I'm not much on pure revenge for motivation. Since it wasn't what I was looking for from Johansen, I haven't read any of her subsequent suspense novels.

Summary: Wonderful Story, Engaging Characters
Review: The "ugly duckling" hook was the one that got me reading this book, and I didn't regret it. This is one of the best "stories" I've read. I loved the main characters - the author makes clever use of dialogue to make the characters come alive. Nell Calder turns from a plain Jane to Helen of Troy and from a wallflower to a strong, determined woman, but the reason for the change: the loss of her 4-year old daughter, is believable. Jill was her only source of happiness, after all. She needs the help of ex-criminal Nicholas Tanek in her quest for revenge, and their lives entwine in the most delicious way! This was a very enjoyable read, romantic, suspenseful and thrilling.
