Summary: Wow! Wow! Wow!
Review: First of all, I was expecting a totally different reaction when I chose this book to read. But after getting thru a good portion of it, I could not put it down. Elizabeth George has an excellent way of developing characters and relationships as well as, developing the mystery and suspense and tying them all together at the end. I am so hooked!!
The Lyndley/Havers relationship is a story in itself. These 2 get put together by their superior. Havers has a history of not getting along with her partners and Lyndley has the reputation of being a philanderer. They are put together to solve the murder of a farmer whose daughter was found by his side with blood all over her in an almost catatonic state.
There is so many mini plots in the story but oddly enough, it is not difficult to follow.
I can not wait to read the next one!!

Summary: Did Not Deliver
Review: I *read* this book, unabridged on audio, because so many people rave about Elizabeth George. I honestly cannot see what all the fuss is about. This book's mystery was fairly transparent and I had figured out the basics of the case by about page 150. I am not a fan of mysteries but for some reason like them when I am listening to audiobooks in my car!

I think that George's books border on romance (I have now read 3 others so as to give her a fair chance!) and also that she could benefit from an editor who is of the "less is more" school of writing. This book was just much too wordy. The length could easily have been halved.

I thought that some of the characters were contived, almost caricatures, and poorly fleshed out.

One good thing about this audio..the performer was superb.

Summary: Flat
Review: I found the book flat. It readed more like a romance, but without ever getting my interest for anybody or anything. The two "heroes" do nothing special to solve the case, they just happend to be there and look around and talk to people, but they could just as well be two unemployed actors. If not for the last part, I would have rated this book 1 star.

Summary: Fantastic beginning to a fantastic series
Review: I had heard about Elizabeth George, but had never read anything by her until one day at the bookstore when I was looking for something new. I picked this one since it was the first in the series, and thought I would give it a go.
I had not finished half of it before I was on the phone with my husband at work, demanding that he go to the bookstore ASAP and buy me the next two, because there was no way I could finish this and have to wait to read more.
Beautifully written, suspensful, and utterly absorbing. Elizabeth George is amazing!

Summary: Her Best Book
Review: I have read every mystery written by Elizabeth George, and I can easily say that this one is her best. It is a very gripping and chilling story, told in incredible detail. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Diverting and satisfying
Review: I just re-read this book after having given PD James a chance with Cover Her Face and Shroud for a Nightingale. I've read all but the latest EG and gave credence to the favorable comparisons to PDJ... the only characteristic I found them to have in common was authorship of mystery novels set in England, with a male Scotland Yard protagonist. After finishing this book I missed the characters; going back to it again I enjoyed spending more time with them. After the two PDJ books, I still have no clue what it's like to be Adam Dalgliesh. Perhaps my love of Jane Austen explains my desire to understand a novel's characters, and have the author show me what their world looks like through their eyes. EG does this for me: often showing how the same event looked different to Lynley & Havers. Illuminating the perils of false perceptions - not just that they happened, but showing us *why* - is what makes a book timeless and, I think, bodes well for history's judgement of Ms. George.

Summary: Lynley and Havers are Great!
Review: I loved this book - I think the characters of Lynley and Havers are fantastic and complement each other perfectly! The secondary characters are also great - Lady Helen and Deborah are divine.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Good book...but not the best...
Review: I read the entire series backwards. I started when Lynley and Havers were well established partners, but this book details how they became partners in the first place. It is a good book--but it is my least favorite of the series.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Read this--you won't stop
Review: I wanted to start with George's first book and I am glad I did. I can see how the characters will continue their relationships in the next books. The author's writing is easy to follow with the full nuances of England and Scotland Yard. Excellent writing that makes me want to continue through the entire series. I HIGHLY recommend it. Peter Robinson fans-go for it!!
