Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: I thought this was a fantastic book! It was fast paced and all of the seemingly far fetched elements came together quite believably. I would recommed this book to anyone who enjoys mystery/thrillers, and I will anxiously await Mr. Baldacci's next effort.
Rating: Summary: Don't worry about staying up too late to finish it. Review: I always wait with anticipation for a Baldacci book -- and plan on a night where I won't be able to put it down. If you absolutely loved Total Control, Absolute Power and The Winner (and thought Saving Faith was good --- but not the page-turner of the others, you will be severly dissappointed with this one. The best I can say about this one is that it kept me just intrigued enough to finish it (though it's definitely not a problem to put it down to get an early nights sleep!)The entire time I felt like the editors had done their best with a jumble of story lines and uninteresting turns, with a few worthwhile characters.
Rating: Summary: Not his best but a good, fun read Review: David Baldacci has rapidly become one of my favorite authors over the last several years. When I am notified of a pending release of a new book by Baldacci, I immediately pre-order it. That said, while LAST MAN STANDING is clearly not Baldacci's best effort, it is still an intriguing book.Web London is the leader of a team within the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team (HRT). HRT can be considered akin to the Navy Seals, Delta, Rangers....the elite. The book opens with Web and his team on a routine mission (if any HRT mission can be considered routine). As they initiate, Web's team is savagely cut down by massive machine gun fire yet Web is seemingly frozen by fear and literally cannot move a muscle. When the smoke clears, every member of his HRT team is dead and he is the "last man standing." Web goes through an enormous amount of guilt and introspection as a result of this catastrophe. Not to mention, the internal scrutiny he receives from his FBI superiors and the pugnacious attitude of the other HRT teams. As he begins to investigate this slaughter, Web begins to think that a leak within the FBI's own ranks might be at issue. At the same time, Web meets up with Francis "Big F" Westbrook, the most feared gang leader in the city. Big F takes a special interest in the assault on HRT that leads Web to a group of neofacists called The Frees, led by a jailed Ernest B. Free. As Web begins to piece together the puzzle between Westbrook, the Frees and the FBI leak, he begins meeting with Claire Daniels, a freelance psychologist for the FBI, in an attempt to "cleanse" himself of the events that led to his HRT team's massacre. At this point, the story begins to go into many, many different directions albeit all tied together in a nice, neat package by Mr. Baldacci by the last page. This, more than anything else, is why I believe most of the negative reviews are present relative to this offering. While I agree that the relationship of the paths taken by Baldacci in developing the plot are arduous, its certainly not impossible to follow. However, Baldacci does make the reader "work for it" and when reading a novel for pleasure, this can be disconcerting. In the end, this is worth the read although this is definitely not his best effort.
Rating: Summary: Boring and unfocused Review: I was very disappointed in this novel. It starts slow and plods for 500+ pages. It has no gripping focus. Too much information about horse farming that adds zero to the plot.
Rating: Summary: FBI-HRT (Hypnotizing Readers Too) Review: Having been fascinated and enthralled with every Baldacci book I've read so far, I was really looking forward to this one. The first thing that struck me was that the quality of the writing is nowhere up to par with the other books. The characters are not really believable and are either attributed too much or too little "personality." I found several typos, sentence structure errors, and at least one mis-stated fact: London's mother could not have graduated from Amherst College - there were no women admitted until about the 70's. But worse than all that was the excessive amount of shooting, killing, maiming, and not enough development of story line. I wanted to like Web London, but he became sort of a comic book character who was hit, shot at, etc and never seemed to sustain significant damage. The most appealing character was Kevin and even he seemed larger than life. The other characters were so two-dimensional as to not cast a shadow. Please, Mr. Baldacci, go back to your old page turning, breath holding style of Absolute Power and Total Control!
Rating: Summary: Awful! Review: There may be all of the elements of a good story here, but it got lost in the telling. I found the writing to be confusing, the characters to be without depth and the plot to be aimless. Since his first few novels, Baldacci has clearly been off his game and this effort only continues his troubles.
Rating: Summary: Vulagarity Review: Very well researched book, very good writer, and excellant plot. Only disappointment was the unneccessary vulgarity which kept it from being a great book which could be recommended to a wider audience.
Rating: Summary: just can't finish all of 'em Review: when i started this book and read the first chapter, i thought man o' man, this is classic baldacci. but then, just like someone snapped their fingers, it was over. what i forced myself to read turned into a bunch of mush about everything hrt. the concept was good, but it seemed like the author tried to tell us everything he learned in research in a chapter or two. as i was reading i caught myself thinking, i just don't care about all this extra. can we get to some story here? this book was incredibly boring to me and i never made it past the third chapter. sorry if i am ruining anyones day, but i loved the other baldacci books and this one is simply not up to the caliber he has shown before.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: I am extremely disappointed in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed all of his other books (especially "The Winner"), but this one was slow & uninteresting. I have read 225 out of 548 pages and have finally given up on it.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the poor reveiws Review: This book was off the hook! If you dig on Baldacci, then this one is required reading. I bought it the day it came out and finished it in 3 days. I lost sleep over this book. Serious sleep. I have read all his novels, including Wish You Well, which actually wasn't that bad. I'm not going to say much about the book, except that it is sweet, because I don't want to ruin it. DON'T LISTEN TO THE BAD REVEIWS! Read this book!...I give this book my seal of aproval. A perfect TEN!
