Review: ------- LONG AFTER MIDNIGHT Iris Johansen Bantam, Mar 1997, $22.95, 542 pp. Dr. Kate Denby and her nine year old son live in Oklahoma where she works at a genetic engineering research facility. Noah Smith wants her to relocate to his pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Washington state because he knows that her current project is closely linked to his own research team's work. Noah has discovered a drug that will cure all the fatal illnesses in the world. Kate has been working on a delivery system that Noah needs to complete his work. Raymond Ogden, owner of a large pharmaceutical company, wants to stop Noah from completing the project because he knows that the panacea will put him out of business. He is willing to buy Noah out, but when that fails, he turns to other means, including killing Noah and starting a congressional and media campaign to end the project. Meanwhile, Kate turns to Noah's friend, mercenary Seth Drakin, for safety as she continues the fight to release the drug onto the market. In between political lobbying and murder attempts, the pair fall in love. However, this couple has a few major problems to work out if they want to consider themselves as a united pair. Seth is a rolling stone, while Kate needs a permanent home. Than there is her son to consider. As the duo fights for what they believe is morally correct, they also battle the demons inside themselves in order for a chance to be together. Bestselling author Iris Johansen has penned a fast-paced romantic suspense that will grab and hold the reader's attention from beginning to end. Though there are moments of questionable credibility in a few of the subplots such as the lack of media attention to a plant explosion, the novel remains brilliant due to the author's clever sleight of hand in fooling readers into believing the heroine will end up with Noah. Suspend belief a bit and enjoy a well-written fabulous romantic thriller. Harriet Klausner M

This book had kind of a futuristic bent to it that hooked me from the get go. I liked it five stars worth. I know I did, because I couldn't put it down.
