Rating: Summary: ANOTHER 5 STAR PLUS BY ILES Review: In short: Jordan Glass has a twin sister missing, possiblly dead. She helps the FBI solve the missing women being painted by an unknown artist. Read the book for the details. I don't know how he does it but Iles keeps you in suspense for over 450 pages wihout a killing or foul word on every page. His respect for women shows through the love scenes. His love of natural beauty comes throuh the characters' eyes. You know the characters as he takes the time to develop them and still keep you in suspense, never boring you. He doesn't blast you with a gorey scene on the first page. Instead, he gently seduces you into the plots and climaxes, inticing you into the big climax when you realize you have come to the end of the story, breathless with the final action. He is a master at this and I have enjoyed every one of his books so far and ready to read another one.
Rating: Summary: Too Preachy Review: I was disappointed in this book. I enjoyed the plotline and it kept me somewhat interested, but the main character, Jordan, was kind of annoying. The author should have let the actions of the character lead us to discovering the character traits of Jordan. It seems the flow of the story slowed as we had to read speeches about what a strong, tough independent woman she was; how she had been in so many dire situations, etc. This could have been done more subtlely in my opinion, not hammered home at every instance. Some of the reviews here say Iles other books are good, so maybe I give his new release a read based on the clever plot here that kind of fell apart at the end.
Rating: Summary: Iles does it again Review: Greg Iles has once again proven why he is my favorite author. He starts a little slower (but not much) with this one than some of his previous novels, but the ending is well worth the reading to get there. Iles' prose is always a pleasure to read even in the slow parts of the plot.I have yet to find an author who has a better grasp of human behavior. All of the little details of daily life that we take for granted Iles incorporates into his characters activities. I've never seen another author do it as well. This helps to make his already well defined characters seem that much more alive. With Dead Sleep Iles' takes on the task of writing a first person POV story with a woman protagonist. In my opinion he also does this better than any male author I've ever read. Jordan Glass is much more realistic than T. Jefferson Parker's Mercy Rayborn (The Blue Hour, Red Light) and much, much more realistic than Patterson's Lindsy Boxer (1st To Die). This book, along with anything by Greg Iles, is a must read. I also recommend: Plum Island - Nelson DeMille, Tell No One - Harlan Coben, and The Devil's Teardrop - Jeffery Deaver.
Rating: Summary: What a Disappointment Review: You have got to be kidding. I wasted my time reading this one because this book received such good reviews. Yes, I think Greg Iles is an excellent writer. Twenty-four Hours was really exciting. However, I had to force myself to finish this one. I continued to read it because I thought it might get better. Save your time and money on Dead Sleep. You might just fall into a deep sleep while reading it.
Rating: Summary: Greg Iles has a knack for thrillers!! Review: This is the first book I have read by Greg Iles, and I'm telling you, it won't be the last!! "Dead Sleep" has engaging, believable characters, a thrilling plot, and a double-whammy of an ending!! Jordan Glass, the main character, travels to Hong Kong as an ex-photojournalist. She spots paintings known as the "Sleeping Women," and she sres herself in one of those pictures, or her long lost twin sister who vanished into thin air over a year ago. But what is also startling about these paintings, is the women are nude and appear to be sleeping, but actually are believed to be dead. Now Jordan is determined to find out the truth of her sister and hunt for the killer. Not only is she hunting for the killer, but the killer is hunting her. Soon, Jordan finds out how someone knows a lot more about her family than she is willing to accept... A great novel, an all-time thriller!!! Don't pass this one up!!
Rating: Summary: Hollywood, here I com Review: I agree with many reviews. This is my 5th or so Iles and he is terrific. Great suspense here and very good writing. Then comes the Hollywood screenplay ending. Then I see at the back of the book "24 Hours, now called "Trapped" is "soon to be a major motion picture". So will this one and his next and so and so on. Too bad for such a fine writer. Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Another great suspense thiller from Iles... Review: I could not put this book down! Greg Iles has a great writing style that captures the readers interest within a few pages and keeps them at the edge of their seat the entire time. This book has a great plot-twisting ending that was unbelieveable! I've read a number of his books (The Quiet Game, 24 Hours, etc) and this is my second favorite after The Quiet Game. Iles can write a good story from a women's point of view which some other authors have a harder time keeping "male" ideas/opinions out of their characters (Grisham). Another thumbs up for Iles on this book!
Rating: Summary: Great thriller, original and twisty Review: This is a very good thriller. I'm new to Iles, and this is a good first taste. I don't think he has a very individual style...as a prose writer, there is little to really set him apart from many others. You would not think upon picking this book up without seeing the cover "Oh yes, this was definitely written by Iles", like you would with some writers such as Jeffery Deaver and John Connolly. But that isn't really very important... What is important is the fact that this is an ingenious, bizarre and very incredibly original thriller. In these days when the genre is swamped (forunately, it's swamped almost entirely with excellent authors) it is quite hard to turn out a book which is completely original, and yet writers like Iles manage to do it again and again. This one stands out particularly. Even the lead characters profession is original. The story has more twists than a rollercoaster, almost none of which you cna preempt. (Especially the last great twist which comes really near the end.) The plot is intriguing, and unlike anything i've read before. It's not quite as enjoyable or thrilling as some i've come across, but it's brilliance makes up for that. The characters are human and sympathetic, and the relationship between the two leads is handled subtly and well. These are characters we definitely care something about. One point: at one stage in the book, Iles uses the old "Does not happen half as often in real life as fiction writers would have us believe." lecture, but then immediately goes on to include the thing which he is talking about as part of the solution. Which sort of spoilt the illusion, but whatever. Last Word: A very original and enjoyable thriller which twists and turns its way to a satisfying conclusion.
Rating: Summary: Suspense at it's best Review: From the first page to the last this story just gets better and better. Will Jordon find her sister, dead or alive? What about her father? Who really knows the details of the Sleeping Women and the true story behind her father? Each page is another page of suspense and mystery. Greg builds his characters in this book to the point you feel like you know each one of them as you would know your friends and neighbors. Some would not be your friends, others you learn to love. This is the type of story you want to take with you on a long plane ride. The time will go so much faster. Anyone who loves mystery and suspense mixed with friendship and love needs to put Greg Iles at the top of his/her reading list.
Rating: Summary: Dead and Disappointing Review: "Dead Sleep" is a gripping murder-suspense-thriller that leaves you disappointed at the end. While I was addicted throughout the book to the story of the heroine, I was embarassed and mad at Mr. Iles for feeling like he had to tie up every loose-end possible at the end of the book. The story would have ended just fine with the heroine being saved. It's almost as if the ending was tacked-on at the last minute to satisfy the comments from a screening of the novel. I highly recommend buying this book used.
