Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Excellent story, as always! I loved the characters - they were very believable, and likable. Great story, with many twists, and a touch of romance, which I thought rang very true. I love how Harry Bosch's name was mentioned towards the end, in reference to the artist, not the character that has made Iles famous! I thought that was a cool touch! Anyway, fantastic story, great plot, excellent ending, and real characters - what more can you ask for? Iles has yet to disappoint!
Rating: Summary: Excellent thriller!!! Review: Greg Iles delivers one of the best thrillers I've ever read, if not the best. He certainly details everything little thing and the book is well-researched. I recommend this to all Greg Iles fans and anyone who likes a good thrill.
Rating: Summary: A super read Review: Iles is masterful with this one. It is believable, complex and entertaining. I read it very quickly because I could not put it down. I eagerly await his next book.
Rating: Summary: ILES' BEST SINCE BLACK CROSS Review: A great, great book. Full of suspense and twists. A must read that you can't put down once you start. This is his best work since the two WW II books. Best thing about this author is that all his books are different- he does not fall into the pattern we are all so familiar with now with most authors. Looking forward to his next book.
Rating: Summary: A Ten If There Were More Stars Review: Jordan Glass, a world weary photographer who has seen more death and destruction than one person normally even reads about, has also endured more than her share of personal tragedy... most recently the kidnapping and supposed murder of her twin sister. Jordan is on assignment when she walks into a museum in Hong Kong and happens on an exhibit of nude women who appear at first sight to be sleeping. Actually they may be dead. In either event the paintings are compelling, and as Jordan walks along the exhibit hall, she comes face to face with a painting of her kidnapped twin sister who had been taken from her home town of New Orleans. Jordan leaves Hong Kong as quickly as she can run to the airport and calls the FBI from the plane. Before going on to Washington as directed, she stops in New York to visit Wingate, the art dealer who had sold the paintings to the museum in Hong Kong. Before she can learn what Wingate knows about her sister, the building catches fire and Wingate is dies in the blaze. Jordan narrowly escapes to make her way to Washington to finally connect with the FBI. John Kaiser, the FBI agent who works with Jordan as they work their way through this incredible maze of clues and misdirection makes a great second character in the book. Dead Sleep is impossible to put down once begun. John and Jordan are written so well together that it would be shame to let them go at the end of Dead Sleep. They would make a great new team for a series.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Fabulous! Review: After reading this book within a 24 hr period of time I am prompted to write my first book review ever. I love Greg Iles' books and this one was a quick paced unforgettable story. Couldn't put it down. I'm glad I was on my vacation when I decided to read it. Each chapter draws you more and more into the story and it becomes impossible not to finish at one reading.
Rating: Summary: This book was GREAT!!! Fast paced suspenseful thriller!!! Review: This book was wonderful! I started reading Greg Iles only recently when he published 24 Hours (which was also 5 stars!!!). I have since then decided to go back and read his previous novels. I read this book in about 3 days. I found myself thinking about it throughout the day when I wasn't reading. It had a lot of action, so it never got boring! The main character was an independent, professional female. She reminded me of Tempe, the main character in Kathy Reichs novels (Deja Death, Deadly Decisions, etc). I truly enjoyed this book!!! I don't think you'll be disappointed!!! Go out and get it today!
Rating: Summary: The Master of the Intelligent Thriller Review: Greg Iles is, simply put, the best thriller author working today. There are many others who are good, but all have evident weaknesses. Cornwell? Artificial dialogue and unrealistically ornery characters. Grisham/Crichton/Deaver? Formulaic writing and inconistent ability to write subtle, textured stories. Etc. Iles scores big points with vivid characters, sympathetic villains, flawed protagonists, and enough perverse coloring to keep things edgy. He has never fallen into the trap of sticking with one subject - Nazi intrigue, Internet Sex, Serial Killers, Kidnappers, Civil Rights - all fall within his realm, and he puts in the research and elbow grease to write about his subplots and not around them. I enjoy Iles' ability to bring characters to life through their passions and careers without pulling the focus away from the spiraling plot. Jordan Glass is a photojournalist, while the antagonists of this book are artists in the paint medium. This juxtaposition of careers and filters through which to view the world enables the characters to communicate through a common thread which facilitates impassioned dialogue. Writing through the eyes of a beautiful tomboy also makes it clear that Iles can capably write circles around others who try this type of narrative risk (eg. James Patterson). He pulls off the trick to make her appear strong yet wounded, willful yet needy. There are no artificially difficult FBI agents who infiltrate almost all the run-of-the-mill thrillers and even the secondary characters are well fleshed out and interesting in their own right. Jordan's FBI "partner" John Kaiser is a Vietnam vet with a difficult past. Her sister is her identical twin, which in and of itself provides many interesting moments. The mysterious semi-antagonist, semi-protagonist M. De Becque is somehow established as a full-fledged character despite very little actual dialogue. The four primary antagonists are some of the most textured and charismatic I have encountered in thriller fare. Their actions are explained, there fears are bared and their commonalities with the protagonists are explored. I could write a plot summary, but others here will handle here. Unlike a Deaver book in which you can generally guess that the most unlikely villain is indeed the villain, Iles refuses to insult our intelligence, and lets the story unfold in a natural light (hmmm.). The ending is not wasted on contrivance - instead it expresses, as do other Iles books, that the end-game in human life is survival and in the excitement and rewards life can bring through its trials. This allows him to finish his novels with a flourish where others fall flat. As Wilde once wrote "They think a murderer's heart would taint each simple seed they sow. It is not true! God's kindly earth is kindlier than men know, and the red rose would but blow more red and the white rose whiter blow." (Ballad of Reading Gaol). Enjoy.
Rating: Summary: A unique thriller Review: While some of my favorite authors have seemed to be rehashing earlier works, with the exception of Dennis Lehane, Greg Iles has continued to totally amaze me with his engrossing story lines. Dead Sleep is no exception. You may wish to read other reviews for the plot synopsis. All I will say is that this was a real innovation in the serial killer genre. Combining photojournalism, twins, the art world, schleraderma, and a New Orleans setting was informative and exciting. Tired phrases but true..."must read" and "I couldn't put it down."
Rating: Summary: WOW!! Review: I love Greg Iles and after reading this book I am stunned by how talented this author is!! I loved this book as much as I did "The Quiet Game" and that is saying a lot. I never wanted this book to end. I loved Jordan, the protagonist, very much and am awed by how Mr. Iles can portray a woman. Her name, Jordan Glass, made me wonder if Greg Iles might be the infamous author that has written the Susan Shader series, but I don't know. Like I mentioned, he sure is adept at getting inside a woman's mind like the author is in that series... Anyway, this book is remarkable as you never know what is going to happen next and the characters have such depth. Mr. Iles writes pure quality novels that make a lot of bestselling authors seem rather, well, shallow. This is a very meaty and thrilling story and I guarantee that once you begin reading you won't want to stop!
