Summary: Stuart, Keep Stone Stories Coming!
Review: This is another Stuart Woods novel starring the former detective turned lawyer Stone Barrington. If I remember correctly, he was first introduced in NEW YORK DEAD, a novel that held me fast from start to finish. I was glad that Stuart Woods decided to make him a recurring character (and he continues on again in SWIMMING TO CATALINA). Barrington saga, Woods has Stone leaving NYC just before a terrible winter storm for what is supposed to be a romantic vacation with his erstwhile new girlfriend and lover Arrington. The storm and other factors (namely a famous Hollywood actor) prevent her from making the trip and instead, Stone finds himself embroiled in the defense of a woman who sails her husband's sailboat into St Mark's harbor less her husband. The charge is murder and if Stone fails, his defendant will hang.

Woods keeps us going with his usual fast pace. As Stone prepares his defense, he soon forgets the hurt of Arrington's absence and becomes involved with his client. That's another thing Stone does well; he attracts women like a moth to a flame. If a woman did what Stone did, people would call her a slut. When Stone does it, male readers must think, "what a lucky guy!"

The courtroom drama continues and the tension heightens. Stone has to deal with the political aspirations of a native prosecutor who wants to be prime minister of the tiny island nation (formerly a British colony). But it makes for fast and interesting reading.

The ending is somewhat predictable and yet somehow ironic. Stone also loses someone he wants to stay connected with and his vacation with Arrington never comes off because she doesn't make it to St Mark's. Woods did a credible job with that piece of the plotline because it created an opening for the sequel SWIMMING TO CATALINA.

Like most of his books, this was a very quick read. But the tension is there and it becomes his usual great page-turner and it also leaves the reader hungry for more Stone Barrington. I hope that Woods will keep the Stone character alive for many more installments. I think it would be possible for him to mine enough stories so that Stone Barrington could become Woods' version of Robert B. Parker's SPENSER. There is no reason why there shouldn't be a series just like Parker's and I think they would be gobbled up as quickly as the SPENSER novels.

Keep it up, Stuart and please keep Stone around for a very long time.

Summary: Not bad
Review: A friend of mine gave this to me, and being the print addict that I am, I read it. Interesting storyline, but Woods doesn't go very deeply into character development, except for when it's time to cook something. A pleasant beach read, but that's about it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Thoroughly Enjoyable
Review: By accident, I read this book after its counterpart ("Swimming to Catalina") which was supposed to be the second one. Reading them in reverse order actually made this one more enjoyable for me. They are both excellent reads...real page turners...and highly recommended by this reader.

Summary: Dead in the Water: Page-turner extraordinaire
Review: Stuart Woods' novel Dead in the Water is a suspenseful tale of murder, romance, and deception. Woods has crafted a story that captures the reader's attention from the opening paragraph until the closing lines. Never is there a dull moment in this thriller. The reader follows the adventures of Stone Barrington, an ex-cop turned lawyer who is intriguing yet refreshingly real. Stone's tropical vacation is interrupted when he meets murder suspect Elizabeth Manning. Through his own good will, he decides to defend this mysterious beauty who stands to lose her life if found guilty. The case has a new twist at every corner, and somehow it never manages to get dull. The story rises to higher levels of suspense as Stone and his client become romantically and passionately involved. The characters develop nicely throughout the novel. As the story line progresses, the reader develops a seemingly intimate relationship with the novel's protagonists and exhibits genuine concern for their well-being. Woods should be commended for this stellar literary accomplishment. By constantly introducing new elements into the complexity of the plot, Woods manages to keep the reader guessing. In fact, the novel's outcome is not clear until the final pages; therefore, no reader can willingly put it down without finishing. The story's conclusion is slightly far-fetched but enjoyable and ironic nonetheless. Woods' endeavor is a page-turner extraordinaire and a treat for anyone lucky enough to pick it up. Dead in the Water receives four out of five stars. Highly recommended.

Summary: GREAT BEACH READING
Review: So it wasn't War and Peace but it was a Stone Barrington sequel and I love his charachters and the characters he finds and socializes with. The ending was not a complete surprise, however Mr.Woods drew it out instead of just figuring it out and ending it there. I will now read Swimming to Catalina.

Summary: Stuart Woods brilliant as usual
Review: Stuart Woods reunites us with Stone Barrington. Okay, so the guy is a cad, but he is fun to be with. And he cheats on his girlfriend. He knows it is wrong, but where is this supposed love of his life? Rushing to meet him on this romantic holiday? NO! He might as well enjoy it as he intended. I find Stuart Woods extremely entertaining and an easy read. He gets to the point and you dont want to put the book down nor skip paragraphs of techno-babble. I wait with baited breath to read "Swimming to Catalina."

Summary: By the end I realized that I really enjoyed the story
Review: This is my first Stuart Woods book I have read. I was a little put off at the relationship between Stone and Allision. I found it to be unrealistic. Because of this relationship I was convinced in her guilt. I found that there were moments in the when I was in total shock. I will definetly read another of his books. All in all, it was a thrilling story

My first Stuart Woods book....not disappointed though.

Good story line. Character development was outstanding. He did a marvelous job of explaining all the in's and out's of the legal system in another country. Outstanding.

The ending was really a surprise. I didn't expect it!!!
