Rating: Summary: Fabulous suspense! Review: I was sick this weekend and read this book practically in one sitting. I'm a ... for style and I have to tell you it wasn't just the spinetingling suspense that drew me in, it was Ms. Gerritsen's gift for crafting an unforgettable and moving sentence. Even the smallest scenes, such as the one between Detective Moore and his dead wife's mom, were beautifully drawn. She makes her characters both sympathetic and accessible, so that we actually care when their lives and sanity are threatened. This is one author who just keeps getting better with every book. After reading GRAVITY and now THE SURGEON, I'd put her right up there with Tami Hoag and Stephen King.
Rating: Summary: Great writer, good story Review: Compared to previous works, this endeavor doesn't compliment Ms. Gerritsen's usually high standards in story-telling and inventiveness, as previously displayed in Gravity or Bloodstream. Rather, this seemed just another proto-typical, scripted psychotic killer story so prevalent lately. It doesn't cover new ground or stretch her writing skills, but seems to be an appeal to satisfy the masses with a quick money-maker. The story seemed so hastily contrived that I'm not even certain I understand the motivation behind the killings and the choice of "trophy".On the plus side, Ms. Gerritsen's writing prose is always easy to read and entertaining and this edition certainly offered more of the same. I just was expecting more of her excellence.
Rating: Summary: A Great Rainy Afternoon Read Review: Although, I read this book over three days, I just did not want to put it down. It left me in suspense, and I admit my blood curdled on more than one occasion. Even though part of it is predictable, the ending will grab you. This is a fun book to read on a wet or cold day; it clips. I particularly enjoyed her varied locales and the characters of each. I also thoroughly enjoyed the author's last book, Gravity. Dr. Gerritsen is talented and should keep us turning pages for sometime.
Rating: Summary: The Surgeon Review: Fantastic read! Every now and then I read a book that I just can't put down and this is one of them. I highly recommend this one!
Rating: Summary: Defeating evil: a thriller for our post-Sept.-11th world Review: I've read all but one of Tess Gerritsen's books and The Surgeon is my favorite. Page 1 pulled me into the worlds of the characters and their actions where I willingly remained until the last page, despite experiencing occasional knots in my stomach. Her lucid writing, lively dialogue, and attention to detail brought characters such as emergency room physician Catherine Cordell and homicide detective Thomas Moore vividly to life. She took me for an informative, believable, empathic, and non-psychobabble journey into the mind of the book's serial killer. I felt warmly when reading her sensitive portrayal of a developing love between two of the characters--a beautiful piece of writing. With the exception of this portion of the book, the characters were too serious and intense; I would have appreciated more lighter interludes, perhaps even a dash of humor. I appreciated her deft oscillation beween gradually turning up the suspense of her well-constructed plot and gradually disclosing the personalities of the characters. I experienced a satisfying sense of closure at the end of this believable and absorbing story of evil and its defeat, of failure and ultimate success, and of the vicissitudes and satisfactions of love. Tess Gerritsen, I rise out of my seat to applaud your virtuoso performance and hereby add to your M.D. degree a doctorate in detective and thriller writing.
Rating: Summary: Whirl Wind...Hold On!!! Review: Awesome book. What an incredible story. I loved the characters of Catherine, Thomas and Rizolli. I simply could not put this book down. I think the fact of the matter is, Tess being a Physician made this even more thrilling, she knows what shes talking about!! If you like medical thrillers, you will love this one. The murderer is not who you think it is!!!! You gotta read this one!!
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: What a great book! Couldn't put it down! I hope there will be a sequel to this. One that will include not only Warren Hoyt (the Surgeon) but also Catherine (Cordell) and Thomas Moore!!!!! Can't wait to read more of Tess Gerritsen's work!
Rating: Summary: Good Review: A solid page-turner. Topical, too, when you consider the recent medical serial killers active in real life! Best thriller since Craig Furrnas' THE SHAPE.
Rating: Summary: Best Book!!!! Review: I could not put this book down, it was just soooooo good that I had to keep reading it until the very last page!!! It scares you, thrills you and makes you feel for the characters. But Tess Gerritsen puts you right in the middle of th eaction, and you can see what is happening as if you were a character in the story. This book is for everyone, and I suggest everyone reads it!!!
Rating: Summary: Grabs You and Never Lets Go..... Review: There's a serial killer loose in Boston, first torturing and mutilating women in a very methodical way and then viciously killing them. The press have dubbed him "the surgeon". His crimes are grisly and he's very clever. As the body count rises, homicide detectives Thomas Moore and Jane Rizzoli are working the case round the clock and getting nowhere fast. That is, until they discover that two years ago an almost identical crime spree occurred in Savanah, Georgia. There, the killings stopped when the last victim, Dr Catherine Cordell, was able to fight back and shoot her attacker. Now she's living and working in Boston and though it's impossible, "the surgeon" seems to have followed her there..... Turn off the phone and lock the door because The Surgeon is about to keep you up reading, all night. This is an intricate medical thriller that has it all: a tight, tense, well-paced plot, full of intense and riveting scenes, crisp, suspenseful writing, terrific well-drawn and engaging characters and a diabolical villian who makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Tess Gerritsen has really honed her craft and her indepth medical knowledge and great attention to detail add real credibility to the story. Add to that a stunning climax and satisfying ending and you have the makings of a superb read that shouldn't be missed.
