Summary: Filled with suspense, horror; a real page turner.
Review: Dr Catherine Cordell is fairly new in town, and in the Hospital where she now works. No one knows much about her past. In reality she is attempting to run far enough away that a horrible secret she carries with her is never revealed. And then the murders start. Young women, found tied to their beds, blood everywhere, and their bodies mutilated in a horrible way. They each had her uterus removed. It is determined they were alive and conscious when the surgeries were done.

When the two detectives, Moore and Rizzoli, came to her office, they knew her history. She had been a victim and managed to escape. It was such a terrible memory for her, she didn't want it known...didn't even want to think about it.

When they asked for her help she didn't want to agree. Her attack was in Savannah and here she was in Boston two years later, and it was happening here. Had her attacker managed to follow her? Was he going to attempt to get her again? She is again plunged into a world of fear, looking behind her, waiting to be grabbed and tied down again... could she help prevent another woman being killed in this way by this monster? Who is he? Does she know him?

This book is filled with suspense, horror and is a real page turner. I was almost afraid to turn the page, yet something made me keep reading. Its a winner.

Tess Garritsen has to her credit a NY Times best seller, Harvest.... She lives in Maine.

Summary: Very bloody medical thriller may nearly scare YOU to death !
Review: Having enjoyed the author's "Gravity", a medical thriller set mostly in space (aboard the shuttle), we wanted to try one of her earthbound offerings. Shake in a bag: Stephen King, for blood-curdling horror; John Sandford, for serial killings galore; and Michael Palmer for a physician's description of real life in the ermergency room; and this book might just fall out. Written in first voice of the killer to at times get us inside his head, and narrated at others by the leading lady and intended victim, Dr. Catherine Cordell, we share the chills from both perspectives as the bad guy stalks the good doctor. Cordell had once before been brutally raped and nearly executed by an attacker, until she is able to defend herself and shoot the perp. Two years after relocating to Boston from Savannah, some copycat killings lead to the impossible conclusion that her stalker is at it again. Boston PD Detective Moore, a widower who tries in vain to ward off his romantic attraction to Cordell, and his colleague, Judy Rizzoli, a tough female cop trying to make it in the "man's world" of the homicide squad, pursue innumerable clues and chase new murders as they attempt to unravel the puzzle, ID the killer, and eventually hunt him down. Gerritsen skillfully lays out the clues just slow enough to maintain gripping suspense, but just fast enough to keep us vitally interested and turning pages. An entertaining conclusion wraps things up quite nicely, even though a bit in Hollywood style.

Readers should be warned this is no happy little tale. There are a great deal of explicit scenes featuring bloody brutality to women, as well as the discussion of rape and fear that much of the action generates. The tension between Rizzoli and the men on the squad (and actually, even in her own family) is palpable and, unfortunately, probably quite realistic; and adds to the uncertainty of the plot. "Surgeon" is not for the weak; and Gerritsen has more than amply demonstrated she can fight and claw along with the best of this genre. Do we envision a movie in the making??

Summary: Tess Gerritsen Knows What Scares Women.
Review: I've never been the victim of s sexual assault, never had a prowler come through my window at night, never been helpless in a harrowing situation-- but these are all fears that women live with every day. Gerritsen drags them into the light of day with this book. The very idea that there is a specific word to describe sexual excitation caused by stabbing a knife into flesh is creepy.

On one end of the spectrum in this book is Catherine Cordell, a successful surgeon, on the other is Jane Rizzoli, a female homicide detective who is struggling for recognition in her own field. Between them is a serial killer who preys on wounded and vulnerable women.

Gerritsen has put far more thought into this book than is normally done with a serial killer story. My reaction to it was rather like my reaction first to reading Red Dragon-- Scary, even repulsive at times but I couldn't put it down. She has managed to find a fresh take on an overused plot.

Summary: Law Enforcement beware....
Review: Law Enforcement beware. Take a lesson from Tess Gerritsen's tense thriller, The Surgeon. Less than enthusiastic and complete investigation due to a lot of assumptions can result in erroneous conclusions and tragic consequences. In this fast paced book, a series of rapes, mutilations and murders match a similiar series committed at another time, in another place. The problem is the perpetrator of the earlier series is dead. Right? Tess Gerritsen sets forth a clever, realistic plot demonstrating the folly of assumptions. This is a story which will keep you on edge and leave you thinking.

Summary: A worthwhile story
Review: Without rehashing the story like other reviews here is my take on the audiobook version:
1) The production was written well enough that even though the reader used the same voice you never get confused on who is talking.

2) The main protagonists are not all beautiful, but more realistic. This was enjoyable.

3) Yes, there is some romance in this story for those of you wanting not just a serial killer/cop book.

4) My only negative comment is that once you find out the motivations of the primary female detective you can figure out some of the story early on.

5) Great villian/serial killer. Also, nice pace in dropping the clues that help the reader try in figure out the mystery.

6) Great use of "action" scenes (medical emergencies) in where the the doctors respond to the emergency and SHOW characterization vs. the author telling us.

OVERALL: Book is worth investing time in to read. It was enjoyable!

Summary: Excellent, Entertaining Read
Review: A fascinating story of the serial killer genre. Besides being about a serial killer, this story is told in an original way and is totally unique. The medical aspects accurately reflect today's medical procedures and are truly part of the core of the story - not simply described to sound "cool" as in sooooo many other medical thrillers. I have friends who are not thriller or horror fans who loved this book and found it highly entertaining. My favorite part was the intelligent, realistic portrayal of the leading female and male characters. I would reccommend this book without hesitation. Anyone who has the appreciation of a great story will like this book.

Summary: Good serial killer novel
Review: i dont think i shall try to give an approximation of the plot...after all, i expect many have done that beore. plus, this is one of those novels where it's best to have little to no idea of the plot all. Basically, its a serial killer novel set in Boston, about a killer who seems to be mirroring the crimes of a similar monster shot dead by one of his victims two years previously...

I shall start by saying that if you like Kathy Reichs/Patricia Cornwell/Karin Slaughter, you should certainly buy this book. It's slightly different, and yet also strikingly similar in that it has a rather medical, forensic focus, which fans of those authors are guaranteed to enjoy...

The characters are good, if nothing out of the ordinary. There are no really new or original concepts (after all, the old "female trying to make it work in a man's world" bit is very much present), but the characters relationships are certainly interesting, and most of them are very interesting in themselves. Especially the lead trio.

The plotting is tight, the writing style quick and efficient. There are surprises and shocks constantly throughout the book, which was something i enjoyed very much. The occasional passages about the killer are also fascianting and engrossing. However, in terms of plot, there is little here out of the ordinary...It's a great, fast paced, tremendously enoyable thriller, but if you read serial killer novels regularly, it seems like nothing out of the ordinary (not like Boris Starling's Messiah, for example, which is a masterpiece). However, if you read this kind of novel rarely, or only ust occasionally, you will probably find it excellent. It's probably just me...i do tend to read books like this quite a bit...maybe i should take a break from the genre for a bit, i dont know.

So, yes, although nothing special (the plot's great, but theres little within it that hasnt been done before, is basically what im saying here) to readers who read within this genre a great deal, im sure that most readers will really like this book, and i do highly reccomend it to them.

Summary: Need something more than cliche romance
Review: I think the story line regarding the search of real killer is fine. However, the image of the romance in the book is so 17- year-old!! A woman is definitely romanticly vulnerable no matter how strong she achieves in life and in career. A woman has to screen and to be emotional. A good ending of romance has to be the news of marriage. A guy is attractive only being strong and "St. Thomas". These are such a drawdown of the reading value since it is so predictable and that makes the characters seem to be so green and immature.

Instead of using tease of romance, there are so many things to keep readers interested. I think Tess should really focus less on lady's imagination of love and more on other taste of life which echos adults' life experience.

Summary: The Most Terrifying Of All Possilbe Murders!
Review: This book, "The Surgeon", has got to be one of the best crime/mystery/thriller books I have ever read. Tess Gerritsen constantly keeps you on your toes throughout the entire novel with twists and turns that add to the thrill. When you think that one thing is going to happen, it doesn't, something else takes you on this path of mystery and intrigue of the human mind, something we can never be too sure about. This book makes us think that people could be kind and caring on the out side, but really they are just thinking of ways to mutilate your body, that was the most disturbing part. But with that said, it was still a book that was a great read and work the terror that it brought to you! Have fun reading it, I will suggest it to all my friends who enjoy reading about this sort of thing!

Summary: Throat grabbing and endless desire to read on
Review: This is my first book that I red by Tess Gerritsen. It is a wonderful, easy to read, stong story. The language is easy to follow, the story flows by itself, keeps you on through out every page and is a great book to read on vacation. The story told me more about a strong woman's personality never giving up and always fighting to the end. Marvelous, Tess Gerritsen!!
