Rating: Summary: Twisted Story Review: There are already a lot of reviews on this book "The Quiet Game" by Greg Iles. What can I add? Maybe that I observed some interesting details in the fast-paced action of this story which is twisted in such a way that it hardly can be summarized.Writer Penn Cage - a former district attorney assistant - comes back to his home town Natchez after the tragical death of his wife. Immediately, he is caught (a) in the investigation of an assumed civil-rights murder from thirty years ago which turns out to involve such celebrities like Edgar Hoover, the present FBI boss, and the former judge of the state supreme court Leo Marston, and (b) between two women, a journalist and editor of the local newspaper on one side and his former high-school love Livy nee Marston. Being a former prosecutor in Texas "who sent people on death row", his motives for investigating the murder are far from idealistic: He wants revenge for the rough treatment of his father by Leo Marston in court which stimulated a heart attack. So Cage is following the hints which connect the murder to Marston... Some FBI guys, policemen, a nanny, and family members of murderers convicted by Penn Cage make a nice body count. The story twists and often brings up new details which make it puzzling unto the final showdown in front of the jury. It is interesting to note how revenge, justice, and punishment are blended in this novel: From the prisen death penalty - which the protagonist still supports but wants to avoid to go to the executions in future - to paying lots of money to a guy blackmailing his father and to covering a crime of his old friend Livy, Penn Cage does not seem to have a clear idea. From the revenge for his father's heart attack via the attempt to solve the civil-rights murder with special emphasis of the situation of the black population in the south to the uncovering of a nationwide scandal: Penn Cage goes through this story like the hero of an old-fashioned screwball comedy, just with the exception that it is not funny. The polarization between "good" and "bad" guys is a bit annoying. Noone basically cares if one of the bad ones gets killed. In some way, of course, that's the way it is in life. The only person not fitting to this good/bad scheme seems to be Livy. But on the other hand, her behavior is so unpredictable that she might be a prime candidate for some sessions at a psychatrist. It might also be that the loss of his wife makes Penn especially sensitive to the offers of other women. But the mixture of his late wife Sarah, the journalist Caitlin (Pulitzer before she turns 29), and his old classmate Livy seems to be a bit too much. In summary: A gripping book with twists in the story of twisted people. Enjoy the reading, and enjoy it also between the printed lines.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: Absolutely loved this book! Greg Iles has an unbelievable talent and imagination! I have been a John Gresham reader and now I have another favorite author! Gripping to the very end!
Rating: Summary: Quite Game anything but - Hold on to your seat Review: Dear Amazon Reader I have read all of Greg's books and without a doubt "The Quite Game" is his best yet. I had the pleasure of meeting Greg when he wrote his first novel "The Spandau Phoenix" in 1993 and knew then that he was a major talent. Besides being one of my favorite authors, "The Quite Game" is one of the best books I have ever read. The plot instantly grabs the reader. His characters feel like you know them and for pure reading entertainment I rate him with Grishim and King. The Quite Game from a reading perspective is anything but. I am looking forward to Greg's latest. "24 Hours due out in early August.
Rating: Summary: Greg Iles gets better and better Review: For me to get satisfaction out of a book, the story must grab me within the first few pages. I can even last for some time if there are interesting characters and/or good dialogue, as long as the story 'takes off' at some point before the last 100 pages. With that intro, every book I have read from Greg Iles has secured my attention from page 1. Spandau Phoenix was a major surprise, Black Cross was a revelation and a joy to read, Mortal Fear a complete change of pace and story, and The Quiet Game ends up probably his best book to date. Greg gets better and better. Very few writers today can write about Hitler, WWWII, computer crimes, and a murder mystery in the deep south in only 4 books, but Greg has done that. We all develop a core group of writers who we follow and idolize and they usually all have the same characteristics. For me, my core group include Stuart Woods, Nelson Demille and John Grisham. Welcome to my group, Greg Iles. This is a magnificent book from first page to last.
Rating: Summary: thoroughly enjoyable Review: Is there more to say? I read books for enjoyment. The Quiet Game was thoroughly enjoyable. Good character development. Great location (definitely knew that Iles was from the South). Excellent story. What more could a reader ask? The only minor points (very minor) I would change would be to make the ending a little longer. What can I say? I want an ending that will be gradual and unforgettable. I would also try to find another publisher...or at least one that will correct all the typographical errors that show up in the hardcover edition. Iles should demand better! Thanks Greg, for a great, fun book!
Rating: Summary: An Outstanding Book In Every Possible Way Review: A quote on the cover of "The Quiet Game" says, "Rivals Grisham's best - Will transfix the reader until the very last page." Sorry! Grisham can't write this well. I read three or four books a week and have for many years. This is one of the best books I have ever read; for plot, for character, for ambience, for entertaiment, for instruction; for every conceivable reason I can think of. I very much enjoyed the other books this author has written but he seems to improve with every subsequent book. I loved this book and I will hold onto it and reread it from time to time. Thank you, Greg Iles!
Rating: Summary: Bravo! Review: Within minutes after finishing The Quiet Game I felt encouraged to write a review about it here. As someone who grew up only a short drive from Natches, Mississippi, reading the book brought back vivid memories of that area that one can only describe properly after experiencing them personally. A true page turner, I read this one non-stop until I reached the end. You'll love the plot. Greg Iles has truly established himself as one of our leading authors.
Rating: Summary: BlackCross Review: After reading this (first one for me) I couldn't wait to read the next one I could find. Finally found them all. After this last one "The Quiet Game" I am looking forward to his next one. They are engrossing.
