Summary: not great, but well done
Review: Overall a good effort. Only systemic problem for me was the Lucas character. Extremely non-dimensional. I don't even recall a physical description of him in the book. In fact there wasn't much much of any character development at all. I've not read any others of the series, so maybe I'm just uninitiated, but Lucas was just a cardboard non-entity. Still don't know anything about him-- how did he get to be an "expert" on weirdo killers? One last thing-- when did any body, EVER, try to be a sniper using an M-16? A short-range, extremely inaccurate assault rifle to take out a hostage-holding bad guy? Better off throwing a rock. Police don't use M-16s for ANYTHING (they use the AR-15, the non-fully auto civilina law enforcement version) let alone "sniping". Come on JS, you should know better.

Summary: It's Cold Out There
Review: People are dying all over the small town of Grant Wisconsin. Police there aren't particularly experienced in murder investigations. There are no obvious suspects. The killings don't even seem all that related. Wisconsin police ask retired Minneapolis Police Officer Lucas Davenport to help. Davenport takes on the case and begins a slow and careful investigation that makes the parish priest the most likely suspect. Yet of course, what1s obvious is often not likely. Through cold and blinding snow, Davenport leads the reader through an elaborate maze of clues to get to the real killer. A well developed cast of characters set in a challenging environment keeps the read a good one. A look inside the killer's mind throughout the story gives us the inside edge. Yet it's no easy guess at who we come to expect the killer to be.

Review: The "Prey" series is one of my favorite. This one had me feeling cold while I read it. Wonderful!Sandford creates some really great characters in this series and one great detective in Lucas Davenport. The stories are always gripping and believable. The action is fast paced and nerve racking. Most importantly, unlike so many other detective novel series by other other authors, the ending doesn't cheat the reader. Start with the first book in this series and work your way through - you won't be disappointed.

Review: THE "PREY" SERIES IS A MUST READ. "WINTER PREY" DELIVERS YET ANOTHER PUNCH! LEAD CHARACTER LUCAS DAVENPORT IS THE TRUE HARD-NOSED DETECTIVE DETERMINED TO STOP AT NOTHING TO PUT HIS CRIMINALS AWAY. THE CHARACTERS COME ALIVE WITH DETAILED DISCRIPTIONS OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL FEATURES. THEY ARE NEVER DULL. IT WAS HARD TELLING WHO THE BAD GUY WAS IN THIS MYSTERY/THRILLER. LUCAS BRINGS ON THE ACTION/SUSPENSE/HUMOR/AND ROMANCE. THIS BOOK HAS A GREAT ENDING. IT WILL MAKE YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT "PREY" NOVEL. JOHN SANDFORD IS AWESOME!

Summary: Track a killer by following clues that reveal the culprits
Review: The story begins with the actions of a serial killer who is attempting to cover his involvement in a sexploitation ring in Minnesota by killing the members of a family. When he is unable to recover an incriminating photograph by torturing the teenage girl, he sets fire to the house in an attempt to destroy the picture. The killer is referred to as the Ice Man, due to the detached and brutal manner he carries out his attempts to avoid being discovered.
Due to the nature of the murders and others that may be related, Lucas Davenport, a tough detective renowned for catching serial killers and recently 'retired' to the area is asked by the local sheriff to help with catching the killer. Davenport takes on the case and for some time remains a step behind the killer as he tries to determine what the real motives are. Finally, he recovers the photo, only to learn it is of such poor quality that there is nothing of value. However, he does get a break, obtaining a copy of an enhanced original, and the evidence is immediate and clearly identifies the killer.
The story is intense and it was difficult to pull myself away towards the end. I listen to books on tape in my car as I commute to work and several times I sat in my car for several minutes listening until a break point was reached. Like all good mysteries, there was a clue very early in the book that strongly pointed to the killer, but it was subtle enough so that it was not obvious.

Summary: Non-stop heart pumping action and a daring killer...Iceman
Review: This book was one of his best in the series. Once you start reading one of John Sandford's books, it is very hard to set them down. Lots of snow, low temperatures, humor, sex scandles, action, and a killer that has to eliminate evidence. Bundle up!

Review: This is my favorite of all the "Prey" books although Rules of Prey is really close. John Sandford spoils you for reading anything else. Wish he could write faster. Lucas Davenport is a great person to live through vicariously!
