Rating: Summary: If you have ever lived with a "fisherman" this is the best. Review: Having "been" married to a fisherman this book was exceptionally funny. Fisherman are funny in their own right, just add some greed and away you go. Carl can always roll it all together, never read a bad Hiaasen. I am always amazed that they call it fishing. This book exposes it for what it really is. Not much just funny.
Rating: Summary: An excellent read, well worth the time and money. Review: Hiaasen has a hit with this book. It's very well written and keeps you entertained throughout. The setting is the back waters of Florida, the characters pro fishermen. The story reels you in with tales of cheating, murder and corruption. The characters are fun, and well built up, so you get an affinity for them. There are plot twists, and turns, to keep you on your toes throughout the story. Hiaasen gives us a good insight into Florida politics as he tells this story. Overall I thought this was one of the best books I've read this year!
Rating: Summary: Fun, Fun, Fun, Till your daddy takes the bass boat away. Review: Hiaasen's best fiction. I don't usually enjoy fiction, but the story is vivid and in the realm of the "incredible but believable."
Rating: Summary: Hiaasen Has His Finger on the Pulse of Redneck America! Review: I grew up in deep East Texas where bass fishing was only slightly less sacred (and only sometimes) to Friday night High School football. Seems like everyone I knew from my childhood knew how to fish, and everyone was always entering bass tournaments for big money. That's why this book hits so close to home for me. It is so true to life in its portayal of the 'fishing elite'. Carl Hiaasen takes the southern man's love of bass fishing, mixes it liberally with criminal intent and televangelism, and comes away with one of his best books ever. R.J. Decker, ex-professional photographer and small-time detective is hired to expose the cheating practices of one Dickey Lockhart, the redneck 'god' of fishing on the bass tournament circle. In the course of R.J.'s pursuit of the truth, he encounters an odd cast of characters, including his ex-wife who he is constantly trying to have an affair with, a bombshell who happens to be the sister of the guy who hired him in the first place (and who absolutely can't be trusted), and the most notorious and loveable of all Hiaasen's characters. It's the introduction of the man known simply as 'Skink'. Once a governor of Florida named Clinton Tyree, Skink has left his old life behind and lives in the woods generally shunning humanity, eating road kill for dinner, reading classic literature, and occasionally acting as fishing guide. All while he hides in trees and wanders around wearing a shower cap and orange rain slicker. Skink's help in exposing the unsavory practices of cheating bass professionals, as well as the owner of the 'Outdoor Christian Network' known as the Reverend Weems (think Robert Tilton mixed with the cast of Hee Haw) is utterly hilarious. And in the process, Mr. Hiaasen also blends in a liberal dose of his environmental concerns for the rapidly vanishing wilderness of Florida, exposing the insidious nature of land developers seeking to exploit the Sunshine State. The result is a pretty fair education into the inner workings of the professional bass fishing circuit as well as the thoughts and maneuverings of some of the dumbest criminals you'll ever meet. It's also a stinging indictment of 'religion for profit', and all the 'faith healings' you see on the programs that are constantly begging the elderly for their Social Security checks (I'm a Christian, but that really sickens me). Mr. Hiaasen's vision of modern-day Florida is admittedly bizarre. There are no normal people in his stories, not even the hero. Everyone has an angle, something that keeps them just a bit off-center. For Decker, it's his need to view life through the lens of a camera. For the Reverend Weems, it's his insatiable lust for prostitutes. And for the assorted cast of bad guys, its their tendencies toward abject stupidity. What we end up with is one of the funniest books about Florida that's out there. If you start it, plan to stay with it awhile. Once this book has its hooks into you, it's not letting go. That much, you can count on.
Rating: Summary: Unbelivably Funny! Review: I just finished Skinny Dip when I ran across this book at my used book store (Skinny Dip was my First Hiaasen). I bought it a devoured it in one night! Who would think a book about Tournement Bass fishing could be so entertaining and so funny! I Enjoyed this book even more than Skinny Dip! Hiaasen is a Hoot and one of my new favorite Authors!
Rating: Summary: Carl Hiaasen is great, but Double Whammy is not his best Review: I like to space my serious reads out and delve into a little escapism once in a while. This is great escapism, hilarious characters and scenarios, and extremely readable. The only issue I had with this one was excessive use of poetic license and direct contradictions. I know little about the pro-fishing circuit, so that's not my beef. Terribly amusing, but not as endearing as the excellent Stormy Weather, or Lucky You, where the endings come together much cleaner (If you read this book, you'll see what I mean when you witness contradictions and great implausibility in the final tournament).
Rating: Summary: Darn funny and entertaining Review: I picked up this book on a whim while looking for another book and I'm glad I did it. Once I started reading I didn't put it down until I had finished it the next day. The plot twists keep coming until the end of the book and its a hilarious book. The situations and characters are so extreme that it makes the book wonderful, I'm going to read all of his books now
Rating: Summary: If you're in the BASS scene, you'll laugh your fins off !! Review: I rarely have time to read a book, but I'm a semi-pro BASS tournament angler so Carl hit a nerve. Quite a lot of B.S.and some poor research but if you haven't "been there" who cares??? Fantastic humor!!! Inspired me to take up reading again,I'm now 3/4 of the way finished with Carls other hit, Tourist Season and it's been real hard to put down........Collect the whole set,Carl Hiaasen books that is. He is truly piece of work !!! Love a mind just slightly more twisted than mine!!!
Rating: Summary: Dreck! Review: I read the reviews and decided to bring this along backpacking. A light book (in ounces) is the thing for backpacking, and something that holds your attention when you're exhausted. This held my attention because, being 50 miles down a trail with nothing else to read, it had no competition once the sun went down. There's only so long you can stare at the stars.
It's contrived like the worst Steven Segall film. The detective, Decker, doesn't solve the crime- Hiaasen instead injects completely unrealistic situations to make the crime solve itself. He uses a wild monster-sized bass that is trained to jump out of the lake into a man's arms. Another guy walks around with a pit bull's head stuck to his arm; he should be dead from the infection. There's two cops that arranage for a 30 cop car escort to the tournament "just to make an appearance". Those are just some of the moronically unlikely situations that happen in this book. And it's not that funny, unless you like obvious humor. This book sucked.
Rating: Summary: Great writer, great dialogue great fun! Review: I read this book a few years ago and have just re-read it. It still crackles with plot, comedy and characterisations. Double Whammy was my introduction to Carl Hiaasen's writing and it still rates as one of the best for me. Buy it, Read it, Have a GOOD TIME!
