Rating: Summary: Don't get the book - Buy a homeless person a meal Review: Book would not have been published if from a first time novelist. I didn't care much about the main character or ever feel that he was in peril. Definetly not a page turner.
Rating: Summary: Grisham's worst book todate. Review: This book would never have been published except for the author's draw. I read it in about three hours. There is no suspense. No courtroom drama and a main character who is totally unbelievable. I felt the book must have been written in a couple of weeks, just to meet a deadline. Have never been so disappointed in book.
Rating: Summary: GOOD LORD Review: Any suspicions about Mr. Grisham's desire to be a screenwriter first and an author second are confirmed in this pathetic story of a yuppie lawyer who discovers, quite by accident, the remarkable fact that there are homeless people in Washington. This story of a young lawyer's journey from the marbled halls of his former law firm to the grungy floors of homeless shelters attempts to blend social commentary, suspense and a bit of romance, and fails in every respect. Mr. Grisham purports (and thinly, at that) to enlighten his readers about the plight of the homeless by introducing us to Mordecai, our hero's mentor and advocate for the homeless; unfortunately, the author completely discredits Mordecai by giving him dialogue that reads like a CCNV fact sheet. The element of suspense, such as it is, surrounds the taking of a file -- yes, a FILE -- and, ironically, is no matter of suspense at all, since we know from the beginning not only that this is a legitimately actionable offense, but also that HE DID IT. And frankly, the David-vs.-Goliath theme Mr. Grisham appears to be adopting as his modus operandi is an unwelcome addition to what used to be some pretty good storytelling. Ultimately, this attempt at social consciousness discovery simply crumbles under the weight of its pomposity and the sea legs of its weak plot line.
Rating: Summary: Don't even think about making this one into a movie Review: I agree with many others. This has to be the worst. The story is so shallow and predictable. A very easy read but not because I couldn't wait to see what happened. Let's hope the next one is better.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good Review: Not as good as the Partner or his earlier greats like A Time to Kill, the Firm, and Pelican Brief but still a page turner when considering the only tension is in the beginning. Mr. Grisham is definitely on his soap box but being i pretty much agree with him, that's ok. A great first work for any other author however i expected a bit more from Mr. Grisham.
Rating: Summary: Good social message, but lacked drama. Review: Being a Grisham fan, I always enjoy his books. The Street Lawyer presented a social message that is long overdue. The book barely held my attention, but I continued to read, anticipating that a final plot would unfold that would give an interesting twist to the book. That did not happen. I am not sorry I read it, but hope that his next book will be more like his others.
Rating: Summary: The Street Lawyer Review: Just completed the new one from John Grisham - The Street Lawyer. Really enjoyed the book. The characters are very likeable and the story is very current.
Rating: Summary: One of Grisham's best. Review: I enjoyed this book almost as much as The Pelican Brief and The Firm. Grisham managed to explore a troubling issue within the context of an attention holding story. I highly recommend the book.
Rating: Summary: A Book Only a Grisham Collector Could Love Review: I read the reviews before the book, and I must admit to some skepticism. I have every John Grisham book. I still think The Firm was his best, but I thought The Partner was fantastic too. The Street Lawyer was an interesting book, but it should have been longer - make me care about the characters! And why not list some agencies that help the homeless? How much of the profits went to the homeless? Not his best.
Rating: Summary: Another soapbox for Grisham Review: My wife and I have enjoyed John Grisham's books greatly. We often disagree over who will get to read the book first (always buying the hardcover as soon as it hits the shelves). I usually get the first crack and use an index card to keep track of all the characters since they often can get confusing if it takes you more than a few days to read the book. The Street Lawyer was my second big disappointment from Grisham (The Chamber was worse). There were few characters to keep track of; none of them were particularly compelling. The plot was very limited compared to prior books. But the worst part was the moralistic preaching about the plight of the homeless (much like the plight of those on deathrow in The Chamber). I'm sure that we have serious problems in this country in how we deal with homeless people. But I resent having to pay over $20 to receive a sermon on the problem. I can get that for free from the liberal press. I'm sorry to see a great writer like John Grisham so thoroughly miss the boat. I wish I could get my money back on this one. My wife will probably read the book against my protestations.
