Rating: Summary: "Street Lawyer" actually written by Christopher Marlowe Review: OK, so Marlowe died in 1593, I concede that, but future generations must claim that someone else was responsible for this tree-killing snoozer, since it couldn't have been written by John Grisham.
Rating: Summary: Snoozer! Review: Started of pretty interesting and went down hill from there after. The plot lacked punch and was far to predictable. Grisham spends the whole book trying to point out how white people should take the full blame for the homeless problem. This is the first book from him I have read, but due to his reputation I will give him another chance. Hopefully I will enjoy other Grisham works.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre at best Review: Grishams tried and true formula of putting his protagonist in the middle of a farfetched conspiracy and spending the rest of the novel trying to save him/her fails rather miserably in this novel. I do not think much of Grissham as a writer, but his plotlines are usually compelling. The unflattering and ironic way that lawyers are portrayed in his novels also add to the storylines. There is the none of that here. The reader is presented with a what could be an interesting story, but ends up with a cliched, burned out, alchoholic's account of his trip into the jungle to find the saintly heir who will hopefully bring him salvation. The worst thing that could happen in a Grisham novel happens here. Namely, the characters become central to the novel rather than the plot. A popular novel should never stray into this arena, unless you are talking about Hemmingway. I have read every one of Grishams novels and I still consider myself a fan, but I have no idea what he was trying for in this book. Wait for the paperback if you must.
Rating: Summary: Yeah, right, I'd love to give up a lucrative job to be poor. Review: Until now I have loved all of Grisham's novels (The Client excepted). His characters and stories are believable. Does anyone out there think a lawyer making a lucrative salary is going to throw it all away just to become poor, homeless, helpless, downtrodden, blah, blah, blah, like his clients? And one other thing- -the wife should either have been murdered by someone, anyone, early in the novel, or just not included at all. Mr. Grisham has tremendous writing skills but he fell into the abyss with this one. I find that in the used bookstores I frequent there are numerous hardbacks of this novel that have been traded in. Not so with his others. Enough said.
Rating: Summary: Had a good start, but soon fizzled out! Review: The book had an excellent start but the plot soon ran out of steam. It seemed that Grisham had run out of ideas. The book just did not have that gripping feel that I had come to expect of Grisham's books.Hopefully his latest book The Testament will be better.
Rating: Summary: Grisham at his best Review: Although predictable, unlike The Partner (5 stars), it kept me turning the pages to find out how the big firm would be slammed. I loved the charactor of Mordecai Greene. I would like to see him in a future novel in the courtroom. His demeanor during the settlement meeting with the big firm made me hope they would not settle. I would have loved to have seen him in the courtroom. I would also love to see James Earl Jones play the part of Mordecai Greene in the movie.
Rating: Summary: makes you think Review: Although I am not a big time lawyer, I am a student who is finishing up my undergraduate and then on to law school. I must admit that the lifestyle of a lawyer really appealed to me at one time until I decided on what kind of law I wanted to do-international adoption. I am only halfway through this book and I already feel like I could be doing more. I have never volunteered at a shelter or even given thought to the homeless until I myself was homeless-twice. My situation did not last long but it was still bad and now that I am on my feet and doing okay, I think about those who aren't doing well. This book has inspired me to change my priorities in life. I am a single female with no dependents. I have the extra time to devote and I will. I thank you for writing this book and I hope that it inspires others to do something too.
Rating: Summary: Its good, but... Review: This book has a great intro, but kinda sucks after that. The storyline is lame, the story not original. The Street Lawyer is about some big-dreams kid lawyer who suddenly has a change of heart and decides to do charity work... I wouldn't call this a legal thriller... Then again, maybe it isn't meant to be one.
Rating: Summary: It was good but dull. Review: I think that John Grisham is a very good writer. But I must admit that this book, even though with a good story plot and colourful characters, it lacked excitement. Therefore, it resulted in it becoming duller in the end. It is also hard to imagine why a lawyer like Michael would give up his wonderful law firm job just like that. But I must say ppl like Michael and Mordecai should be applauded and I hope that everyone continues to support John Grisham! =)
Rating: Summary: Great start Review: This was the first time that I've read a Grisham book and after the hostage sequence I was hooked. Unfortunately this hook loosened and I became free by about half way through. There was something there though and if you like a nice simple read on the train to work this might just be you. I will certainly read him again.
