Rating: Summary: For my first John Grisham book.... what a disappointment Review: As an avid reader, I enjoy all types of books. This was the first book by John Grisham I have ever read. I was so disappointed that such a renowned author could have written such a terrible book. It will be very easy for me to never read another.
Rating: Summary: Made me sleepy Review: This is only the second Grisham novel Ive read(the Firm being the first)and I have to say,the Street Lawyer was disappointing. The beginning was promising, but it slid downwards gradually from there. The ending was too tidy and perfect, while the middle was boring. There wasn't enough action or suspense,or anything really. However, the book did give me some insight into the world of the homeless, but it was too preachy for my taste.Ill try A Time to kill, which seems to be getting better reviews.
Rating: Summary: John must have been really smashed when he wrote this novel. Review: I don't know what John was thinking when he wrote this garbage. I hope that nobody else wasted their money on The Street Lawyer. It should be called, I was Drunk when I Wrote this book. Have a good day.
Rating: Summary: Not Grisham's strongest, but surely his noblest Review: Grisham's strengths lie in character and plot, not evocative description, and in this book he does far more describing than his prose gifts can enliven. The plot is thinner, less intricate, and more predictable than his other books. Yet this book breathes compassion, and the characters are wonderful. As I read this, my experience was colored by knowing that Grisham himself is an extremely generous man. A few years back, a do-gooder organization for which my mother was working received a congratulatory letter from its national office for the extreme success of this unit's fundraising. The figure quoted in the letter was about 300% higher than what they'd actually raised, my mom thought. Inquiries were made. Turns out that Grisham had quietly given several million--that's right, "several" and "million"--to the national office in the local organization's name. I read this book as a gift, a gift to the homeless. Grisham surely had no intrinsic need to write about them, especially since describing their plight required a kind of book that is not his forte. I believe Grisham used his considerable fame in the same way he uses many of his considerable millions. That doesn't make this a blockbuster piece of writing, but it makes it an act worthy of admiration.
Rating: Summary: It was a extremly compelling story line. Review: I loved this book and was hurt to find it not a bestsellar. Plus amazon only gave this book 3 stars, but the storyline was so compelling that i definately think it should have been granted more stars. This storyline kept me on the edge of my seat and i think that everyone should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Not Grisham's best but good Review: I love John Grisham's books. He has made me laugh, feel outraged and cry (especially with A Time to Kill). But The Street Lawyer falls short. The book started off with promise but towards the end I just didn't care what happened to the characters. Not the best book I have read but far from the worst.
Rating: Summary: A dissapointing effort from an otherwise excellent author Review: John Grisham is concerned about homelessness and poverty in America. He is disgusted by lawyers and others with wealth who do little to help them. This point is made abundantly clear in the first 50 pages. Yet, the entire book serves as a platform for Grisham to wax on endlessly about these, admittedly, serious problems. The book has no fluid motion. He weaves together several flat story lines, all of which end in a climax both dull and too neat. The story isn't well developed, and neither are most of the characters (save Mordeci Green). If he spent a little less time trying to prove how bad homelessness is and devoted it to story and character development, this might be a worthwhile effort. Save your money...and if you are new to Grisham, try "The Runaway Jury" or "A Time To Kill" for some of his better stuff.
Rating: Summary: Good Message But Not Grisham Review: This is a very tedious book. Do not get me wrong it had a good messge but the plot was dull. I had some hope of the plot getting better yet I lost it. The court room battle was boring by far and nearly everything after the first chapter. The last to pages did have an alright ending(compared to The Partner). I would have given this book two stars but like I said it had a good message.
Rating: Summary: Bubble-gum book -- the flavor's gone in 10 minutes! Review: This was my first Grisham book (though I've seen a few of the movies), and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. The protagonist is disappointingly flat as a character, although supporting cast like poverty lawyer Mordecai Green are both realistic and admirable. Not much of a build-up, and the climax was disappointing as well -- everything came too easy. Brock's declaration at the very end about how his life did a 180 in 30 days sums it up -- upon finishing the book, the reader has merely lost the few hours it took to read it. If word processors could write a book on their own, the Street Lawyer would be it.
Rating: Summary: This was my first of Grisham's.......Thumbs up !! Review: I loved the begining. It was a great opportunity to read about the world of poor, homeless people. The settlement at the end was a little disappointment, as I was expecting more of leagal actions, but still, it was worth to say...Thumbs up!!
