Summary: A lawyer's conscience is a luxury!!
Review: I have read most of this author's books, and those I have not read, I have watched in the movies. This book really affected me. When one starts law school, one is full of ideas about making a better world. This book has reminded me about my dreams and hopes when I started law school and why I studied law.

I think the author clearly shows the internal struggle of all of us (lawyers or not) between following one's impulses and conscience, one's principles and figthing on the innocent and poor's behalf; or chosing to pursue other goals in life: money, power, social status, luxury, etc.

The story is excellent and very compelling. One can not help flipping the pages over and over again, watching the character's internal struggle, until you find out what kind of life he will chose, what decisions he will make. The description of the heroe's thoughts, feelings and life felt very real. This makes it easier for the reader to identify with the story. This book clearly shows two different and opposed ways of working: in a big and well-known law firm or in a small office, with a very strict budget and very poor clients (defending the poor vs. the big companies and wealthy clients).

In conclusion: a great book.

Summary: Same Grisham, Different Plot
Review: True to his form, Grisham has churned out yet another page turner that's hard to put down. As far as the plot itself goes, however, The Street Lawyer is far less compelling than some of his previous works. That's not to say that the premise isn't interesting: the story begins with the shooting of a homeless man and is centered around the money of the rich trampling on the rights of the poor. It's the intricacies of the plot twists that make it hard to feel satisfied. Much of the drama centers around one stolen file, the suspense around victims who are already dead, and the side plot around a lawyer trying to save a drug addict.

Nevertheless, Grisham keeps you reading. Don't know how he does it - but once he's got you into one of his books, you'll be hooked. As such, it's a bearable way to pass the time and stay awake.

Summary: A Friendly Compassionate Lawyer?
Review: If you suspend your belief for a while this book is a decent read. In retrospect it isn't so hard to believe that someone (even a lawyer) could have a change of heart, but what Michael turns his back on doesn't seem realistic to me. Maybe I am a cynic, but read for yourself. It isn't Grisham's best book, I think A Time to Kill, the Firm, and the Partner are the best ones and it certainly rates better than the Chamber or Runaway Jury.

Review: John did his research on this book. His excellent abilities as a stroy teller were combined with some real insight into "street smarts".

Summary: The Street Lawyer
Review: The story begins when a bum walks into a rich firm and holds ten attorneys. He has dynamo strapped to his body and is holding a gun. He asks one lawyer to give him the facts straight of the IRS reports: how much money have each of these big-time lawyers donated to charity? By charity he doesn't mean the local symphony or the high-up charities they give money to in order to get their name mentioned, but money given directly to the poor homeless people on the street or the soup kitchens, free clinics, homes, etc. that help them out? Of course the lawyer can't give a very big figure. Although no harm results from this short hostage-holding-session (except to the bum, who is shot by a sniper outside and whose brains explode all over the lawyer who was assisting him with the figures) and it seems like the bum was just trying to make a point instead of really hurt anyone, and although the rest of the attorneys go back to their strenous trying-to-get-on-top schedule, the lawyer who was asked to tell the bum the statistics is deeply touched by this episode and wants to find out more. The lawyer's name is Michael Brock, and he becomes the main character of the story. Although he is a rising star at the Drake and Sweeney, the law firm, he gives up some of his billing hours to investigate this incident. This decision leads him to helping at a free clinic and donating his time at a homeless shelter. When he finds out what connection the firm has with the bum, he leaves it, and takes along with him a stolen file. From then on, he is a crook, and a street lawyer.

John Grisham speaks loudly and distinctly about social problems of the U.S. homeless citizens. You'll be touched by the characters and you'll feel for them.

Summary: A Feel Good Read at Best
Review: Grisham's novel has an important theme but it is too slow to develop. It's starts off great, but as you progress thorough the book, the plot slows down. It seem like the first chapter was the climax of the novel. I wouldn't call it riveting or engrossing, but if your a lawyer with a guilty conscience or you are just wanting to be informed (a little) about the poor and how terribly wronged they are in society well this may be for you.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Grisham books are not great books but good books that make a long trip seem shorter -- with the exception of The Street Lawyer. It's a simplistic book that, to a certain degree, insults the intelligence of the reader. Homelessness is not a simple issue and while the story premise is quite good, Grisham fails to deliver a credible story or give new insight to the problems of homelessness. Finally, you can predict ending just by reading the jacket cover.
