Rating: Summary: A "can't take your eyes off of it" experience Review: "The Street Lawyer," by John Grisham is about a selfish lawyer who's life was turned around by a terrifying incident. A homeless man took a group of hot-shot lawyers hostage, and all recovered just fine, but one lawyer. He went in to it deeper and found the reason for the random hostage-taking. The information that he found turned his life completely around. This book was similar in a sense to John Grisham's other books. Although the plot was much different than any other of his books, it still contained his common "Law" theme. In this book, however, he looks onto the law from a completely different angle. This book made me think of the many aspects of like that most people avoid. It gave me a completely new outlook on homelessness and the many reasons for it. On the las page of the book, the quote, "I didn't dare think of the future; the past was still happening. This quote really summed up the whole book and for once, a book actually seemed like it was finished.
Rating: Summary: Not Just Another Legal Drama Review: This is one book you can "see." Grisham paints such a vivid picture with his words that you'll feel like you're right in the middle of the story. It's not meant to be one of those pull at your heart strings, make you turn into a volunteer for the Salvation Army books, though. It's a truly compelling novel that deserves to be read more than once.
Rating: Summary: Compare to His other earlier books.. this isn't that great! Review: Compared to some of his earlier books, this book is pale in comparision. Don't bother to be "wowed" like his earlier books
Rating: Summary: A Fascinating and Suspenseful Novel Review: John Grisham's, "The Street Lawyer", is a great novel that includes multiple topics ranging from suspense to poverty, to divorce, to homelessness, to lawsuits. It definitely deserves five stars for its originality and suspense. The protagonist Michael Brock, a young big firm lawyer in Washington D.C., has his life drastically altered at the beginning of the story by a homeless man. He becomes aware of the poverty in the District and begins to devote his time to being a street lawyer. Once this begins, the story begins to take shape and Michael Brock's life is seriously altered by his new role in society. He starts dealing with street people he never thought existed when he sat behind his beautiful leather chair at his previous firm. Grisham does a wonderful job in describing how hopeless Brock's life has become once he becomes a street lawyer. Michael then begins to form a lawsuit against his formal employer, Drake & Sweeny, over the wrongful deaths of five homeless people. With the help of Mordaci Brown, a partner at Michael's new firm/legal clinic, Brock takes up the case under much media scrutiny. You must read this story because of its outcome and its suspense. I thought that "The Street Lawyer" was one of the most well written books I have ever read. This book is certainly a masterpiece and I suggest that you go and get yourself a copy today.
Rating: Summary: john grisham at his best Review: i have read almost all of john grishams books and this was by far the best i did like the others a great deal but they in no way compared to the street lawyer it was magnificently written and mesmerizing. i did not take my eyes of it until i got from the front cover to the back cover. it was the best book i have read in a while
Rating: Summary: Changed my point of view Review: This book had quite an effect on how I look at homeless people. While the story was quite an interesting read, it had an underlying moral, that not all homeless people are in that spot because they are too lazy to find a job. I really enjoyed the book, and highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly Good Review: I read The Street Lawyer after a co-worker loaned it to me. My expectations were not high - I had read The Firm several years ago and, while I enjoyed it, it felt more like a rollercoaster than a novel. With The Street Lawyer, however, we find that Grisham has eased off the melodrama and developed a bit of a conscience. All the Grisham trademarks are here - fantastic opening scene, dynamite pacing, colorful characters - but he's given us some food for thought as well. I'm sure there are those that will accuse him of being didactic here, but if he makes a few more people aware of the plight of the disenfranchised in doing so, I don't really have a problem with that. If you're looking to dip into the legal thriller genre, you could do a lot worse than this.
Rating: Summary: Another Great Grisham Novel Review: I thought this was a very insightful and enjoyable novel. Mr. Grisham never fails to provide twists and turns in his novels and create stories that make me keep turning pages until the wee hours of the morning. This book looks deep into the lives of the homeless and points out many things about their existence that I never would have known. I had never heard of "street law" and was inspired by finding out that it exists and getting a glimpse of what these people do to help their fellow man. Unlike the other reviewer, I think this book could have been even longer. I would love to have seen the relationships at the end of the story develop and see where they headed. I congratulate Mr. Grisham on a job well done and for a great read! You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: THIS NOVEL CHANGED MY LIFE YET I FEEL THE SAME Review: I just finished reading John Grisham's The Street Lawyer. It tells of Michael Brock, a young rising star in the prestigious law firm Drake and Sweeny who, after being held hostage at gunpoint by a hobo, becomes interested in the plight of the homeless and becomes a street lawyer. I won't spoil the rest of it if you haven't read it, but it is a gut-wrenching novel on the injustices served upon the homeless. After reading it, I'm a changed teenager. Ok, maybe not. The novel is pretty sappy and self-righteous, the writing predictable and suspense lacking. It is a typical thriller type novel in that in the end the good guys win and the bad guys lose and everyone lives happily ever after except that it isn't thrilling in any way or sort. The used hardcover wasn't worth the 7 dollars that I paid for it. If it were a CD and I had a CD burner it wouldn't be worth the blank CD. It's not even worth borrowing from a local library because there is a risk you might lose it and have to buy the library a new one. I would have given the book something below a 1 star, but there isn't anything below a 1 star. Treat it as a negative 1 star.
Rating: Summary: Yuck Review: What a disappointment. I never finished this book and wish that I'd stopped long before I did. It doesn't get any better. I usually love Grisham's books, but this one is weak. Try The Testament or The Pelican Brief or The Firm if you want to read a good one.
