Rating: Summary: Could not put the book down. Review: I read this book in one sitting,I just could not wait to see what would happen next. I hope this book does not truly portray the people in charge of airlines ,military and insurance companies, for I do not think it would be possible to have so many self-centered, morally bankrupt people incharge of anything. However , it does accurately depict our me first society. A great book with great heroes defeating a number of jerks.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Demille and Mr. Block do very good work. Review: I found this book to be a teeth-grinding, edge of your seat, can't wait to find out what happens books. I enjoyed it thoroughly. If you want to delve into a hair raiser this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Most Enjoyable Tale Review: I never have given a ten, so nine from me is tops. I read this book as an ex Navy officer, and private pilot, but not ex Navy pilot. The tale is very well written.I only picked up one piece of trivial inaccuracy, but one any Navy guy should see. The flag never flies from the stern when the ship is underway. The suicide scene plays up the flag, but it would not have been on the fantail of the carrier. It was also a comment on the fall in morale in the services in general, which is a bit out of date, but was accurate at the time of first writing. I hope that the moral fibre of the US Navy is better today than is portrayed in the book. But, asa warning, it is still valid. The same comment applies to corporate morality which is portrayed at an all time low. Probably still a valid comment. Great book, even for airport reading!
Rating: Summary: Fast-paced, surprising and suspenseful Review: Fast-action thriller. Anything that can go wrong does. So many obstacles to overcome. I must say that there was one scene that was moving. It was the saddest moment in all of the books I have read. Good job of keeping us on our toes.
Rating: Summary: Don't drive and listen to this one! Review: Several slow areas of lurking about generated the eight -- otherwise riveting areas not condusive to driving and listening to this story. Demille did a creditable and acurate story line. Great read/listen. Audio tape.
Rating: Summary: Fun read! Review: A very entertaining book that I could not put down. DeMille is one of my favorite novelist, and while this is not his best, it will keep you occupied.
Rating: Summary: DeMille's first novel is as good as his last! Review: The BEST prose of any writer in the suspense thriller genre alive today. If you haven't read BY THE RIVER BABYLON yet, do so because you are in for a treat. DeMille gets your heart rate up, lets it down slowly, gets it up again, lets it down again, and repeats all through the novel! WHAT A GREAT READ! Advice to frequent flyers: Don't read it!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! Review: I listened to the unabridged audio version of this book and even with the rather deadpan voice of the narrator, I still very much enjoyed this book. The book has action, plenty of suspense, thrills and chills. It grabs your attention from the beginning and doesn't let go until the end. The descriptions are vivid enough to allow you "see" what's going on. Some of the character's actions were totally unexpected--a fact that I liked. As a result, I was surprised (or shocked) a few times. I listened to the book on the way to work and was tempted to drive around my office building a few times--rather than go in the office-- just because I didn't want to stop listening. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Fantastic page turner. Review: I wish I could find more novels like this one. It would make a great movie. Kept you on the edge of your seat all the way through.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant. An astonishing read Review: 10+ Brilliant, explosive, an astonishing read. This is a masterful suspense- filled thriller. Little did I know after reading the first forty five pages I'd suddenly be hurled into a gut-wrenching, heart pounding brilliantly penned story of the downing of a civilian supersonic airplane, during a questionable military exercise, and the subsequent cover-up. A story of survival. With unrestrained clarity, the destiny of a handful of men and women is portrayed with horrifying lucidity. With my adenalin pumping well over 180/90, a dry throat, a thumping heart, a stomach tied up in knots churning faster than I could turn the pages, I was propelled into a world where saving one's skin became the name of the game.
This book is pure gold. Vintage Mr. Demille, though don't expect to crack-up laughing. Maybe a sudden nervous chuckle half way through the book, but that's it. No light relief in sight.
An incredibly accomplished work of fiction. Hmmm, it is fiction, right?
