Summary: A great twist on a familar theme!
Review: DeMille and Block have collaborated on a surprising fresh and tautly written airline disaster that takes the reader (literally) to new heights. Set on a "Concorde-like" supersonic transport that flies in subspace, the authors take us on a very scary ride with an amateur pilot, courageous "stew", and rather enlightened child.

As if our "heroes" didn't have enough problems with the plane, they're also up against a variety of organizations and/or individuals who are out to coverup the disaster and going to great lengths to do just that. Throw in 200 or so VERY uncooperative passengers and you've got the making of a great story! (Think "Dawn of the Dead" meets "Airport".)

But, I really don't want to give away much of the plot because this book is really worth your time! Guaranteed to make you think twice the next time you board a plane!

The only reason that this is a 4-star, instead of 5-star offering is due to the somewhat predictable (yet not altogether unsatisfying) ending. Far superior to most airline disaster novels, "Mayday" is a fine book and merits your attention.

Summary: Mayday Thrills and Chills!
Review: Knowing this book was co-authored I was a little skeptical about how good a read Mayday would be. I was pleasantly surprised. Mayday is a quick and easy read and while it may be a bit lacking in the character development area compared to other Demille novels, it is a page-turner nonetheless. Without giving anything away, the basic story is that a passenger with two others must overcome unthinkable odds and challenges to somehow land a badly damaged plane.

Block provides the realistic and detailed descriptions regarding the plane and the horrors of what can happen at high altitudes. Together they have crafted a story that will scare, excite and interest you all at the same time.

Summary: Mayday!
Review: I read the Thomas H. Block version and it wasn't all that good. I haven't read the updated version (please tell me if there is much of a difference other than technological) I read it on the plane for a laugh (the cover has a plane crashing on it) but the last laugh was on me.

Summary: Grips you from the start and won't let you go
Review: I love Nelson Demille's works, his ability to develop characters and his capacity to get me drawn into a story. When I saw this early novel I simply had to buy it and I was not disappointed. He and Thomas Block partnered to write a fast moving and interesting story about a supersonic transport over the Pacific - a military test gone awry and the consequences of radical decompression at high altitude (the descriptions of brain damaged passengers and crew are amazing).

It is a truly compelling story that will keep you turning the pages. The fact that the coauthors have known each other since elementary school simply makes this more interesting and makes me want to turn now to Thomas Block's works.

Summary: DeMille Hits The Target!
Review: Ever suspect some underhanded cover ups by our own military and government? Ever think that TWA 800 out of NY was part of some ghastly hush-hush job by higher ups?

DeMille urges us to believe anything is possible. He and co-author Tom Block are right on target in this updated and re-released disaster novel.

In "Mayday", we meet John Berry, a survior of an errant missle blasted Straton Flight 52. He is a private pilot and takes on the responsibilty of landing this flying coffin. The dead and brain damaged souls aboard are grahically depicted as decompression at 66,000 feet would dictate.

I am an avid DeMille fan and have been working my way through all of his books since "The Lions Game". DeMilles talent for drawing us in with smooth dialouge, taut as tight-rope riveting action, and dabs of comic or romantic relief with his well defined characters makes him one of my favorite authors.

I could go on and on about this laser paced read. However, I'll let you find your own copy. Simply put..."Mayday" is to the sky what "Jaws" is to the sea.

Thanks for your interest in my comments--CDS

Summary: Suspense and thrills at their best
Review: Mayday was a surprise for me! I could not believe how suspensful this novel was. I have had a hard time finding novels that WOW me anymore, that don't follow a formulaic and predictable plot. This book remewed my faith in fiction! This book made me feel like I was watching a movie. I often had that feeling of anxiety in the pit of my stomach! I felt all the emotions the authors wanted you to feel- I also felt that the plot twisted and turned like a roller coaster ride! These poor people surviving on this plane had so much against them. The main thought that sticks with me is that I hope I will never have to hear the gutteral groans described as coming from the brain-dead passengers. Simply chilling! A must read for suspense and thriller enthusiasts!

Summary: TENSE & EXCITING! MORE OF A 4 1/2 STARRER!
Review: When I came across the book in a garage sale, I just bought it coz DeMille's name was familiar. I'm glad I did! Of course, the ending was predictable..had to be a happy ender. But what keeps you at the edge of your seat is how the survivors managed throughout the flight & how they DID it!

Summary: Another Winner from Nelson DeMille
Review: At the start of this one I wondered how he could fill the 460 pages with enough plot twists to keep me interested. It did not take long to get hooked with this different take on "reluctant hero overcomes impossible perils". The pages flew by at at least 100 per sitting. Mr DeMille is a master at keeping you glued to his books and "Mayday" is great entertainment. It takes a minimum willing suspension of disbelief to get totally involved and root for the good guys. The bad guys are well drawn and it is easy to find them dispicable. Fun read.

Summary: Another great book from Nelson Demille
Review: I have read all of Nelson Demille's books and while some are better than others, I think this is one of his most captivating. I couldn't put it down! It's thrilling to read although not very thought provoking and maybe not the best choice for a plane ride! However, I highly recommend it.

Summary: DeMilles best
Review: From the first page to the last, the action carrys you in the cockpit with all the fear and excitement possible. As with all his books he does not leave much time for anything else until you are done and then want another. I have read all his books and only wait for his next to make my day.
