Summary: Will there be a sequel?
Review: Don't get me wrong, I love Grisham but this leaves so many characters to wonder about. It doesn't have to have a happy ending just an ending. I wonder about the Ricky, the Latchers, Pop and Gran. The only one that seems happy is Luke's mom. Luke is optimistic. The story is written very well. I like Grisham's style of writing but I need to know more about their futures.

Summary: A Painted House
Review: I read every one of Grisham's books the minute they are published. This one, told in the voice of a 7 year old, started out rather slow, but about midway through, I knew he'd done it again. Grisham proved to me that he can wander from his traditional, action lawyer tales to something very different, sensitive, and down to earth. Although I wasn't raised in Arkansas, living on a poor farm in Iowa with corn instead of cotton as the crop of life was very similar. Grisham hits the target with his gardening and hard work-no money stories. I'll be anxious to read his next book, which I understand will be back to basics; however, wouldn't have missed this one.

Summary: Just plain boring....
Review: I am a fan of John Grisham and have read most of his books. I respect him for trying something different but this was the most boring story I have ever read. I kept waiting for something to happen and the ending just left much to be desired. The narration of the story was from a child's view but he had thoughts more in keeping with a older teen or young adult. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is an avid Grisham reader.

Summary: Bible Belt mysteries revealed
Review: Grisham's latest Book THE PAINTED HOUSE is a window into American's most misunderstood segment - the Bible Belt. To begin to comprehend the combination of strong work ethic, stubborn pride and refusal to accept defeat, the acknowledging of the Bible as the infallible word of God but living your life outside of its precepts but still remaining a Christian - these mysteries and others are explored in a gentle, loving way. There seem to be only two ways to enjoy reading this book; forget who the author is and embrace it as a wonderful tale, or - just as we do with Faulkner and other beloved Southern writers - study and survey how his writing style is evolving. The several strong parallels with THE CLIENT were intriguing - such as the theme of a small boy witnessing a murder and that his brother's name is Ricky? Those are more than random coincidences.

Summary: Major Disappointment
Review: I am a huge Grisham fan. I have read all his books, and never complained about one. However, his latest book "A Painted House" was a huge disappointment. Before buying this book, I thought it was extremely clever of Grisham to try something new and different, and I couldn't wait to read it. On retrospect, he should stick to what he knows best. The book lacks any purpose, plot or substance. It was a simple story which lacked any real suspense. If you are looking for a book that is easy to read and which requires little thought, than this book is for you.

Summary: A pleasant change of pace
Review: I have been a John Grisham follower since the beginning and have loved all of his books, as well as other medical & legal thrillers out there. However, I must admit this book when in an entirely different direction than his norm. However, a direction I enjoyed. This book continually and thoroughly gave me a warm and comfortable feeling. Although I have already returned to the latest thrillers, The book "A painted House" was an intermission I highly recommend

Summary: Grisham loses the formula
Review: In this memoir written by the usually readable Grisham, an extremely precocious 7-year old is the narrator. No 7-year old I have ever met could think like this character. The reader waits the entire book for something to happen and nothing ever does. It was quite a disappointment, as Grisham's stories are usually so riveting, you can't put them down. This was a waste of time and money. It is much like the new Baldacci novel, both of which should be missed.

Summary: Absolutely spendid!!!
Review: This is simply one of the best books I have ever read! I was a little hesitant to read this book because I so love thrillers and mysteries, but from the beginning, this book kept me enthralled. It was quite a change from his previous books, but this man is a true artist, taking you back to 1952, a time that I will never know, but somehow became familiar with through this book.

Summary: Read only if you like a good story
Review: If your only favored reading is the usual Grisham grist, don't buy this one--you'll only be disappointed that it's not the good-boy-lawyer-saves-world-one-client-at-a-time style of story. Fact is, I do like most of Grisham's work, because there's nothing wrong with a good thriller. "A Painted House" is no thriller, but it is beautiful. You have to be interested in reading a story, though, not just be swept off your feet by action. You can see this by reading these reviews. The people who didn't like "A Painted House" are whining because it's not an action-packed adventure novel (though there IS, actually, plenty of action). My question to them: Did you read the dust jacket? Hey, readers, don't be fooled, this is an excellent story; this book is a memorable gem!
