Rating: Summary: The Painter House Review: Of all the books John Grisham I think this is the most boring and mundane book I have ever read. The only reason I finished it was because I actually thought it would imrove. I will not buy any more of his books untill someone else whose opinion I trust reads it first. I felt this was a waste of time and money! Do not recommend this book to anyone I know!
Rating: Summary: Refreshing Change Review: I have been hooked on John Grisham since I read "The Firm". I picked up "A Painted House" in an airport, once again late for another flight. Upon opening the book I was fully expecting another story filled with lawyers and court room drama. To my surprise I was introduced to Luke the 7 year old narrator living on his grandparents cotton farm in the early 1950s. I completely enjoyed the story and was quickly taken in with Luke and his family. This was a refreshing change for me as well I'm sure it was for Mr. Grisham.
Rating: Summary: Little House on the Prairie meets Grapes of Wrath Review: I didn't know John Grisham could write without lawyers. I was so impressed with this book, I could barely put it down. I wanted to see if he could keep my interest when the narrator was a 7-year old boy. Would it be like a second grade reader? Absolutely not. Grisham really brought home the plight of the poor cotton farmer in the 50's, but included the charm of love and compassion among the farmers, hand-shake agreements, living off the land, prayer, and true frustration with elements they have no control over. I hope Grisham will write this way again. It was wonderful!
Rating: Summary: A Painted House Review: This is one of those books that "you just can't put down". Although a day job gets in the way of reading, I did manage to start and finish the book in two nights. The pacing of the book was perfect. The story was simple, yet complex- but without long, boring descriptive sections that some many books lean on. If you enjoy reading books based in the southern United States, with a 50's timeframe, you'll like this one.
Rating: Summary: On par with The Grapes of Wrath Review: An excellent story, Well written. This story really gets you into the fields with the Chandlers as they fight to survive in rural Arkansas. And coming through the eyes of a 7 year old only makes it better. This should be required reading for all High School Kids.
Rating: Summary: snooze - zzzzzzzz! Review: I'm half way through this book...wake me up when it's over. zzzz
Rating: Summary: As fun to read as watching a painted house dry Review: Grisham should stick to his legal dramas. It started with a lot of promise. Sadly, the characters were underdeveloped to say the least. I never felt any kind of emotion for anyone in the book. If he had wrote a few more chapters that developed the characters it would have been a much better book.
Rating: Summary: The Painted House Review: This book starts out very slow. Keep reading as the heat of Arkansas draws you into the storyline. One of his best books.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful book Review: I own every book John Grisham has written and this one is by far his best. From the first chapter you are drawn into the life of Luke Chandler and his family. It is heartwrenching, touching and funny all rolled into one book. It is difficult to stop reading it, yet you dread finishing it. You wish it could go on and on. The characters are real people. You feel as if you either know someone like them or have probably encountered someone like them. I am unable to express the deep feelings this book brought out in me. It is one of the rare books that I look forward to rereading many times over. Thank you, John Grisham.
Rating: Summary: OK story, but lacking that Grisham suspense I expected. Review: The book totaly lacked suspense and at times was very slow. I have read every Grisham book, and all, with exception to Painted House where gripping legal stories with plot twist after twist. This book is simply a story about a kid growing up on a farm who wants to someday play baseball for the Cardinals. Outside of that, the rest of the 360 pages don't do much for you. Lucky I read it all in one night, or else I might not have picked it back up.
