Rating: Summary: Eh.. could have been worse! Review: I thought John Grisham's "A PAINTED HOUSE" was ok. there are some parts of the book that are very slow, while there are others that pick up the pace. it is definitely not a "traditional" fast paced grisham book, so don't expect it. if you would like a nice story this is the book for you. I do believe that the ending was quite abrupt and it left a lot open. I don't know if this was intentional or not. I would have liked to seen a more definite conclusion to all of the story lines that were left open.
Rating: Summary: Grisham's books Review: Grisham's books are very good in my aspect. I have read a lot of his books, and most of them are good. But, The Brethen wasnt so good. I began to read it, then I guited about half way through. It wasn't so good as his other books. I have not read A Painted House yet and I hope to. (**I have not read this book, so I assume taht his new book will be good) Dr.Q
Rating: Summary: Luke's Story Review: Luke is a wonderfully mischevious seven year old boy growing up in rural Arkansas during the time of the Korean War. He lives with his mother and father and his father's parents in a small unpainted house on a farm. They are cotton farmers. When cotton picking time arrives, Luke's quota for the day is 50 pounds. This story is told through Luke's experiences of watching the adults worry about the weather, the price of cotton, hiring Mexicans and Hill People to help pick cotton and through his part in a struggling proud family who all live, work, and worry together. Any reader who has ever known a seven year old boy will love Luke as he narrates the hiring of the Mexicans and watches the hill people move in and camp in his front yard right over home plate. Luke's ambition is to grow up and become a baseball player for the Cardinals in St. Louis. As you read through the days of cotton picking and some difficult adult situations that Luke sees happen, you hope that all his dreams will come true and he will be able to get away from the hardships he has witnessed. Grisham does not need a courtroom and a chase scene to write a memorable book with characters that will come to mind again and again. I have enjoyed his legal thrillers, but A Painted House offers up a beautiful sensitivity that proves he can write just as well when he reaches out to a new format.
Rating: Summary: Something Different Review: Well, I must say, John Grisham certainly did a 180 in this book. I've been used to nothing but law dramas over the years from him, but this one really was different. It reminded me of 'To Kill A Mockingbird' in one way, but with Mexicans being the prejudiced enemy here. Also, it must be overwhelming to a seven year old, like the narrator here, to witnesses the events that occur and then not be able to share them. I won't give away the story to those who haven't read it, but it will excite you. I did just finish another interesting book: "A Tourist in the Yucatan" a rough little thriller but a lot of fun.
Rating: Summary: No more lawyers Review: This is one of Grishams best novels. Althought there isn't a lawyer in sight, the misadventiors of the main character, a seven year old boy named Luke, keeps you turning pages. The true to life details keep you wondering about the characters far after finishing the reading. This is a fine novel about growing up and shows that Mr. Grisham has more talent than just writing law novels.
Rating: Summary: A very well written book Review: No, this is not a typical John Grisham story, but so what? I found it to be a very well written and very interesting story. Reading through some of the reviews I am amazed. One person said that they would not read another book by Grisham without reading the reviews first. Now that is an open mind for you. Let someone else decide for you how good the book is. I personally never read the reviews until after I have read the book. Some complained of it being boring. Believe it or not good books can be written without non-stop action and unbelievable heroics. John Grisham showed that he is versitile enough to write a totaly different type of story than he normally writes. Good for him. This may not be the type of book you would read yourself, but it is a GOOD book.
Rating: Summary: Another winner for Grisham Review: This is one of Grisham's best efforts. The flow, anticipation and easy association with the characters were excellent. Mr. Grisham has a wonderful gift of understanding human nature and the ability to relate to the reader just how the character feels. He doesn't waste words but gives enough background to allow the reader to feel acquainted with each character. I hated to see this book come to an end and hope that Mr. Grisham continues on with this young boy's life. I for one can hardly wait to see what happens next in this young boy's world; where will he go from Arkansas? How did he and his family do in Michigan? Did they ever go back to the cotton fields??? These were real people living hard but honest lives; let's hear more on this family, Mr. Grisham! This is a five star effort! Please continue with your great legal thrillers but lets have more of A Painted House also. Thank you!
Rating: Summary: Waste of time Review: I truly believe if I had written this book, no one would have published it. Talk about resting on your laurels. My advice for John Grisham is to stick with what you do best.
Rating: Summary: A Painted House by John Grisham Review: A wonderful story beautifully told from a young boy's viewpoint. Growing cotton on rented land in rural Arkansas was not a profitable enterprise, but it was a way of life for 7-year-old Luke and his family. "A bale of cotton was worth a hundred and seventy-five dollars, give or take, depending on the markets. A good crop could produce a bale an acre. We rented eighty acres. Most farm kids could do the math. In fact, the math was so easy you wondered why anyone would want to be a farmer. My mother made sure I understood the numbers. . . . If our luck continued through the picking . . . then the Chandler farming operation would break even. That was our goal." This is a story unlike Grisham's previous thrillers, but it is just as captivating. You laugh, you cry, you become immersed in the few months of Luke's life that are harvest-time on the farm.
Rating: Summary: A lazy day of summer, sitting on the deck, good read Review: I just felt great after reading this book. A sequel better be forthcoming! I loved the way the story is told through the eyes of a seven year old boy. It is just a good book.
