Rating: Summary: Excellent! Just couldn't put it down! Review: Dont start this book....if you don't have time to finish it! It enthralls you from the first sentence. I started it at the hair salon and did nothing for the rest of the day and the next but read it! John Sandford and "Lucas Davenport" at their best. When's the next "Prey" book coming?!
Rating: Summary: As usual, a great "Prey" novel! Review: Certain Prey is a excellent book. This novel was a little different from Sanford's other "Prey" novels, but it held up on its own. This time, Sandford was able to change the tone and setting of this book by allowing the reader to see the killers first -- up close and personal.Thank you Mr. Sandford for the change. You allowed the characters to experience more reality of life. This change was a break from the usual format, i.e., who is killed, who is the killer, why he/she kills, main character is in love, yada, yada, yada. Overall, I love all the characters, but Sherrill needs a little make-over. In my opinion only, she seems to be too whorish. By this I mean, her male co-workers respects her as a fellow officer, but as a woman not at all. Clean her up. Once again great work.
Rating: Summary: Different Type of Prey Review: I have enjoyed all of the Sanford "Prey" novels, being caught right off the bat with the first one many years ago and this is my favorite. As opposed to many of the books out this summer this is not about a serial killer, but a contract killer and the character of Clara Rinker is wonderful - smart, a killer with a conscience. And to come at it from both sides, know the plot and the killer up front, but see how the police and FBI figure it out. You wonder in real life how much of crime solving is luck. Probably more than any of us would like to realize. I was also happy that Lucas seemed not to be in a depressed state. What a pleasant change. I realize that he doesn't have a woman in his life - but neither is he depressed or suicidal because he doesn't. Thank you - sometimes it is possible to be happy and productive alone. I do miss the character in this book of his friend the nun - but hopefully she will turn up in future books, she's wonderful. Sanford is very good at giving the minutae of an investigation but keeping the pace taut and the characters smart. Excellent reading as always.
Rating: Summary: Too Much Filthy language and gratuitous killing. Review: I have read all John Sandford's books, including the John Camp ones. I feel he is running out of plots and he certainly is running out of adjectives, nouns, and other parts of speech, since he has used F___ and S--- for practically every part of speech on every page, by every character. I personally feel there are some people who just don't use that language.
Rating: Summary: Never a disappointment all "Prey" novels excellent! Review: I have read all in the series and have never been let down. I was put off by the tv movie, only because I think Ron Moss "Ridge" from The Bold & Beautiful" would make a excellent Lucas Davenport.
Rating: Summary: Fun to cheer the hero and the villains! Review: Another excellent Prey book. I found the villains to be very likeable (though I don't think this was the intention) and crazy! I will look forward to future encounters with Rinker and Davenport. As always, Sandford's writing style flows smoothly, is a breeze to follow, and still maintains the humor I love the most. Lucas Davenport is still one of my favorite characters, even after all these years (even if he can't keep a woman)! Excellent book!
Rating: Summary: Another "Prey" hit! Review: After reading a ton of mediocre mysteries this summer, I picked up Certain Prey and found it to be the highlight of the summer.Letting us know who the killer is right from the start was certainly a different twist and a clever one at that. John Sanford"s characterizations are routinely good and as another reader has commented, we are quite willing to hate Carmel and find a little love for Clara. As for the gorgeously handsome Hale, a little sympathetic contempt. I would like to have seen a little more of him. I truly hope that Mr. Sanford plans for us and Lucas Davenport to meet Clara again very soon.
Rating: Summary: Exciting, thoughtful book Review: Another excellent book from Sandford. It's a little different from his rest, but variety is the key to keeping reader interest. I liked getting a peek into the mind of a professional killer. I also found the relationship between the two antagonists interesting; the way the professional killer turned out to have more of a conscience than her client.
Rating: Summary: The Glowing Reviews must have been written by relatives. Review: After forcing myself to finish this poor excuse for a novel - I have come to the conclusion that the glowing 5 star reviews written for this book must have been written by Mr. Sandford's relatives. This read like a reject script from a network tv crime show. Carmel Loan and Clara Rinker are not at all believable. Davenport's skills as a deputy are more a product of luck than skill. Amazing how everything turns up in no time at all. Just in time for the commercials. Whew! Since this is my first (and last) Sandford book - I can only speculate that he got the book deal based on his past journalistic accomplishments - not his literary skills. I will be a very cautious buyer next time I shop at Amazon and will not look to these reviews as a kind of guidence to buy the book. Can I get my money back?! djp@capgroup.com
Rating: Summary: Not the best, but still a good read Review: Again, I wait and I wait and at last it arrives. A whole year has to pass before the new Sanford is out. I get it and read it overnight because my friends are all waiting. This one is okay, and parts of it are excellent, but there is something missing. Perhaps as others have written it's the fact that Lucas ought to have an excellent sex life and be able to get and keep a woman, but that doesn't seem to be happening. Perhaps it is because I couldn't wait for the movie treatment to be released and it was definitely a disappointment. Eric LaSalle is no Lucas Davenport, although he is a fine actor. I will wait for the year it takes for the next Prey to be released and hope that whatever it is that is missing from this one is back in the next entry.
