Rating: Summary: Skip this one. Review: First I will say that I have read most of Mr. Grisham's books. The writing is just fine, not great but OK. There characters are well drawn and the descriptions of events nicely done. But, frequently Mr. Grisham has difficulty with plotting. He has characters, who are intended to be smart, doing things so stupid that it just defies belief and if you can't believe what is going on it is hard to enjoy the book. This is nowhere more the case than in the Summons. The plot just does not make sense and the main character makes one after another, ridiculous decision. The only reason the book doesn't end on page ninety is that his opposition is even more illogical in their behavior. Come on, how hard is it to make the action believable? Added to this is the author's propensity to take a very holier than thou position toward lawyers and corporations, both of who are seen by him as inherently corrupt. It is just tiresome but he can get away with it because of his established readership, of which, I am sorry to say, I am one.
Rating: Summary: THE SUMMONS Review: THIS BOOK IS A DISGRACE. I HAVE READ ALL OF GRISHAM'S BOOKS AND FIND THIS ONE TO BE AMATEURISH AT BEST. I FEAR THAT POPULAR AUTHORS HAVE A TENDENCY TO DEPEND ON THE QUALITY OF PAST WORKS TO GENERATE SALES. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE CASE IN "THE SUMMONS". [...].
Rating: Summary: Grisham is back in the game Review: Ok, I have to disagree...I loved it! I was frantically turning pages to get to the end. Tense, tight, taut, and brings back dear old Harry Rex from A Time To Kill. What's not to love? I guess the fact that I am a minor law professor (ok, a lawyer and a paralegal instructor!lol) from a gothic southern background myself might have influenced me somewhat, but I thought it was great!!
Rating: Summary: He should have to read it....... Review: J.G. should have to read this book and rate it. I cannot believe he would be able to give it any more than 2 stars. Very predictable, easy to read, seems to me he wrote this novel over a long period of time because the flow is poor and in a word SIMPLE. Don't mistake it for clean prose, could have been a college writing assignment. Maybe it was old school work he found in boxes that gave him the idea for the hidden $.
Rating: Summary: The Summons Review: In a word, lame. Obviously Mr. Grisham is under contract pressure to turn out books.
Rating: Summary: A poor effort Review: Written like a first book.Predictable and Boring
Rating: Summary: Don't respond to The Summons Review: When you read a book by a favorite author and chapter after chapter is flat, boring, and lifeless, you keep going. After all, this is the author of "The Firm" and "The Testament."I'd rather have a root canal than re-read this book. The characters are flat, predictable, and lifeless. The plot goes nowhere and doesn't hold your attention. The ending is the worst I've ever read. Read a retail store catalogue, the obituaries column, ANYTHING other than this book.
Rating: Summary: Grisham is back Review: Finally Grisham is back with a legal thriller. His last novels (Skipping Christmas & A Painted House) were disappointing. An interesting plot, once again set in the south. I liked reading it. A book all Grisham fans will enjoy.
Rating: Summary: The Summons by John Grisham Review: This book is weak: weak plot, weak characters, weak writing. I felt that the publisher would not have accepted this book had it been submitted by an unknown author, and that Mr. Grisham cranked it out in order to meet some contractual obligation. I love his earlier books, especially The Client, and some of his later books at least gave him a chance to make the reader aware of some issues he cares about, but this book is just blah.
Rating: Summary: The worst Grisham yet Review: This has to be the worst writing by Grisham to date. The first 250 pages could have been omitted. The ending was bad, the characters were bad, the plot was bad...I could go on and on. I am an avid fan of JG, but not so much after this tale. Give me more of Brad Meltzer! MJM
