Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down Review: I have read every John Grisham book that has been written and this one did not disappoint me. It was a short book (341 pages with large print) and I found it to be quite suspensful. More than anything, I kept wondering what I would do in the main character's shoes. It did not have a great deal of character development but was a great read.
Rating: Summary: The Summons is a disappointment Review: The Summons is the work of a man who has achieved success with his early books because of the commitment that he made to the reader to provide exciting and intellectual thrillers that you didn't want to quit reading. The Summons is the antithesis. It is the writing of a man that has other interests in life and is more concerned about the revenues from the book rather than the quality of the storyline. There was never a moment where I was excited about reading this book. Do not waste your time.
Rating: Summary: The Summons Review: It is a good thing we are allowed our own opinions! I have read all of Grisham's books and I thoroughtly enjoyed this one from the first word to the last. I found it very believable and relaxing. Perfect for a cold NE weekend just as Skipping Christmas was perfect for the holiday week.
Rating: Summary: 0 stars would be more appropriate Review: I read 2 to 3 mystery/thrillers a week, including John Grisham's, and I would definitely say that this book must have been written with $ signs all over it-a quick buck for the author!-extremely disappointing after looking forward to his new book for several months-although, with Grisham, it's either feast or famine, and this was definitely famine-I've read better stories from the 6th graders that I teach-and they're not getting paid!
Rating: Summary: Going home Review: Back to Clanton, MS and Harry Rex. If you were raised in a small county seat in a sparsely populated county where everyone knows everyone (and what each did the night before), it matters not whether you are from the deep south, the midwest, or wherever. You know these characters. I think Grisham has recaptured his touch. Wanting more action? It doesn't happen like that. In life it happens like it happens in Clanton. You can awaken to a surprise that shakes a quiet, not-quite-desperate life and it usually begins where it always hits the pit of your stomach hardest...at home. Grisham knows these little horrors that grow into sleepless memories.
Rating: Summary: Barf! Review: There must be a method for getting a refund (or at least a credit) on a book that is pretentious, immature, strung out, boring, repetitious -- in other words, a total waste of time and money. Grisham fill pages with flighty bits of superficial nonsense about gambling, flying, rehab houses, drug reactions, the UVa which do little to advance this essentially plotless story. I read it to the end because I had my 25 bucks invested, but I could baely wait til it ended. A 50 page short story might have been more appropriate. This is now 3 or more consecutive strikes on Grisham. He should quit and stop sucking hard-earned cash from hopeful readers. Give me back my money.
Rating: Summary: How finding 3 million dollars changes people's lives Review: What would you do if you suddenly found three million dollars? And what if that money came from a deceased parent's home? This is the dilemna at the heart of this book. If you're expecting another Grisham legal thriller, don't buy this one. This one is far less about legal battles than moral ones. Unfortunately, the plot just doesn't hold together all that well and even the moral struggles, as described here, aren't all that engaging. Grisham isn't in top form here. For one thing, Ray Atlee, the dead judge's son who finds the money, isn't even that riveting or likeable a guy. Secondly, there are plenty of plot holes and illogical moves. Ray, for instance, discloses the whereabouts of the money to people who are almost complete strangers. Why would he do this? Made no sense to me. Still, this book did make me wonder what I would do with a sudden windfall of three million plus change. But I've read a much better book about this, A Simple Plan, a book about three men who find a fortune in a crashed plane. A Simple Plan is wonderfully written, suspenseful and darkly realistic. But save your bucks and avoid The Summons.
Rating: Summary: from anniesrats.com Review: I love John Grisham, always have! The SUMMONS, was no exception, it was excitement and non stop thrills up until the end.Ray Atlee, the main character is a typical, easy going law professor, with usual comforts that go with the job and salary. ONCE Ray and his brother FOREST are summoned back home, the adventure begins. Although, the ending wasn't particularly in my best interest, it did leave it open for a whole new adventure. And who doesn't want another, GRISHAM adventure?? They are so breathtaking, tantalizing, get your heart pounding vivid in your face, adventures, that you have to keep on reading, until you finish.
Rating: Summary: more of the same, but worse Review: I like Grisham's formula for legal thrillers, and I enjoy his breezy style of writing. This one, however, is pretty tired and I felt betrayed by the time I reached the end-- why did I spend good money on a hardcover? I recently read that Grisham has a couple more legal thrillers left to go for his contract, but it seems a disservice to the public that he be forced to write more when his heart clearly isn't in it anymore. I wish he'd just take a break, and when he feels more inspired to start again.
Rating: Summary: To Share Or Not To Share That Is The Question! Review: 'The Summons' by multi-talented storyteller John Grisham is a thrilling tale about two brothers, Professor of Law Ray Atlee, and his reckless brother Forrest. The two brothers are summoned home by their ill father to discuss his will. But when Ray arrives his father is already dead, and the single page document dividing his estate between the two sons seem crystal clear until Ray discovers $3 million hidden inside his father's house. The question quickly becomes should he keep the $3 million find a secret from his reckless brother? 'The Summons' is an intriguing story that will entertain the reading audience for hours on end.
