Rating: Summary: Not Grisham's Finest Review: This book features the usual Grisham trademarks--well developed characters, interesting Southern locales, and a hero whose life appears ready for a change. These features draw the reader into the book. But once there, the plot meanders into a series of dead ends before bringing us to a predictable and unsatisfying conclusion. This is particularly disappointing to the legion of Grisham fans, of which I am one. I know you're goping to buy the book anyway, and it is a good way to kill some time. But don't expect this to be the second coming of The Firm, The Partner or even Missing Christmas. It's just a lesser effort by this outstanding writer. My prediction---this book will never be made into a movie.
Rating: Summary: The True John Grisham Review: I have read all of Grisham's novels - even before he was famous. The last two Grisham novels I read were SKIPPING CHRISTMAS and A PAINTED HOUSE. These are not what one would expect from Grisham. Thus, when I purchased THE SUMMONS, I was a bit concerned that it was be in the same genre as the last two novels I read. I was relieved to find that THE SUMMONS is a traditional Grisham novel. It is going to be difficult to write about this novel without spoiling it. I will be careful. Grisham has a rare mastery of the English language. He employs his skill to craft a story of two brothers - polar opposites. One is a successful law professor who is held in high esteem within his academic community, while the other is a chronic addict with all the problems that substance abuse brings. The bothers converge to deal with the death of their father - a man dearly loved by his community and hatred by both sons. Like Grisham's novel THE TESTAMENT, this is a story that focuses on the mystery of a father's last will and testament. Grisham takes his readers on a ride that is filled with intrigue and conniving. I can't say more. Grisham leaves us with an important thought - the right to self-determination. If a legally competent person makes bad decisions, does a family member have the right to deny that person's destiny? In his own way, Grisham's answer this ethical question. As someone who teaches ethics, I will use this novel to illustrate the importance of this critical concept. Although, THE SUMMONS may not be Grisham's best novel, it is a very good story.
Rating: Summary: My last Grisham book Review: I've read all of Grisham's books, and this is my last! What a major disappointment. Given that his name alone garners millions of dollars in advances, I suppose he feels like he doesn't have to work as hard anymore. This book is pure lazy. It reads like it was written for an 8-year old. No complexity. No layers. Trivial grammar. Overly simplistic plot. It makes me sick that this man gets mega money for this type of work! Instead of Skipping Christmas, Grisham should have skipped The Summons!
Rating: Summary: A Dull Read Best Skipped Review: This was the worst of the Grisham books. I cannot believe that some people are writing good reviews of this book. Grisham's book was not only boring, dull, anti-climatic, shallow, but also inaccurate in estate tax law. Mr. Grisham, if you write law novels, at least be accurate about the law! Giving this book two stars is charity.
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: I thought this book was a return to his more thrilling books. It was not just a flat book about law, it had more adventure.
Rating: Summary: A Very Good Grisham Review: As usual, the Author has come up with another. Great Characters like Ray, Harry Rex, Forrest and the post humous Judge. The plot had me wondering until the very end. The suspense of the money and the side story of the woes of Forrest gave me alot to relate to. The tales of the honorable Judge were well put. The description of the settings were nice and made me able to feel them. A must for Grisham fans.
Rating: Summary: ZZZZ... Review: What a disappointment! I looked forward eagerly to Grisham's latest legal thriller, but he really let me down this time. Not only did I have a difficult time staying awake while trying to read this book, but I didn't care about any of the characters. Ray Atlee, the protagonist, is uninteresting and unlikeable. Last night I put it down with about 30 pages to go, and I'll have to force myself to finish. If you must read it for yourself, get it from the library and don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Grishamlicious Review: A real page turner. The best thriller I've read since Craig Furrnas' THE SHAPE, which is a MAJOR compliment.
Rating: Summary: Diane who? Review: If she is an author and gives The Summons 5 stars it's no wonder I have never heard of her. I'll be sure never to read her books.
Rating: Summary: REPENT ALL OF THY SINS! NOW! Review: All of you who have not favorably rated this book are HEATHENS! You will all ROT IN THAT PLACE OPPOSITE OF HEAVEN! HOW DARE YOU BLASPHEME THE WORDS OF GOD HIMSELF? Can't you see? This book is the BIBLE! RAT ATLEE = ABLE FORREST = CANE HARRY REX = MOSES ETC., ETC., ETC! REPENT THY SINS AND WITHDRAW THY COMMENTS! Seriously though, this isn't as bad as a book as almost everyone here makes it out to be. -_-;; (this is a joke btw...don't take it seriously ^^)
