Rating: Summary: Well.......... Review: I read The Summons in one sitting, in an afternoon. It held my attention and was a thoroughly "easy-read." My disappointment in the book came in the fact that it didn't evoke a strong visceral emotion from me such that books like The Chamber and Walls did. I even liked The Bretheren more because, even though it didn't evoke the strong emotion, the plot was very creative. I'd recommend The Summons but would rather see Grisham return to the prison.
Rating: Summary: Lame! Review: Several people I talked to as well as other reviewers arrive at this essence of this book when they say "you just keep waiting for something to happen" Grisham has fallen off my purchase list with this one!
Rating: Summary: DO NOT OPERATE WHILE DRIVING AND TIRED Review: This is Grisham's worst book. Unbelievably monotonous and tedious. I listened to the audio CD version while driving across the country because audiobooks should keep you awake right? Ha! You'd have found me napping in Missouri somewhere with this lousy book thrown in the trash. Wait for it in paperback or get it used from Amazon or ... something when everyone else who made the mistake of buying this new realizes they got ripped off and want to recoup some of that wasted money. Any money Grisham makes from this "best seller" is absolutely wrong and unearned; he's really cheated his fans.
Rating: Summary: A Fire--Please! Review: What can I say about this book. I have read just about all of Grisham's books. He is good. There is no doubt about it. His main characters are usually interesting and wonderfully likable. I loved the "The Pelican Brief", enough to remain up all night to finish it.Well, this book is different... All I can say at this point is since I am down to the last few chapters of the book. I believe that for the good of all concerned the money should have been torched immediately after being discovered. Surely no well-meaning and sane person would have retained a desire to keep a quantity of cash that they did not want and could not safely protect for the period of time that the character did. Why did we have to endure this insane running around with unwanted money? Who cares where it came from--I did a slow sinking into despair, wishing that he would just set the car on fire and be done with it all!!! Yes, John, "The Painted House", was great. Please try again. Thank You.
Rating: Summary: What a disappointment! Review: ...I am an avid reader and I have enjoyed all of Grisham's books since he appeared on the scene with his first legal thriller. I looked forward to reading The Summons and finally got the opportunity. My thoughts after putting it down was that if he had throw in some trashy sex it would belong the genre of books published by third rate paperback writers and/or publishers and did not belong with the list of past Grisham stories. I hope he does better in the future!
Rating: Summary: Formulaic thriller Review: Read John Grisham's THE SUMMONS, his latest legal thriller . . . the problem: it wasn't much of a thriller . . . it is the story of two brothers who are summoned to their father's house to discuss the details of his estate . . . however, the meeting never takes place because the father dies too soon . . . there are some twists and turns, including the ending (perhaps the best thing in the book), yet methinks that I am getting tired of the formulaic approach that Grisham used here in putting this together . . . it is almost a paint-by-the numbers endeavor; i.e., it feels as if the author just went through the motions in putting this together . . . I'll give it faint praise by saying that it was at least better than his previous "book," SKIPPING CHRISTMAS . . . what a joke that was! . . . it was little more than a short story, somehow blown up to be sold as hardcover . . . whatever you do, miss that one!
Rating: Summary: This is ridiculous Review: John Grisham should know better... with the publishing of The Summons, he has really hit rock bottom. This book is so a to z formula that is should immediatly be a mass market paperback. I, as a Grisham fan, am sorry that I even read this ~350 page book. It is not a bestseller, it is not a good story, and until I hear otherwise, I will not read a John Grisham book again
Rating: Summary: The Summons-TaylorvilleLush Review: The book starts out when Ray receives a letter. Ray Atlee is a law professor and he receives a summons to see his father to read his will. He goes to his fathers house and he walks in and finds his father dead lying on the couch. And search though the house and finds 3 million dollars in 27 boxes in a dresser. The rest of the book is about how Ray tries to find out where the money is coming from and who is following him, Because someone else wants the money too. This book is a great suspence and I recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: The Summons Review: I have read all of his books some over and over again. This is a travesty....Mr. Grisham Pleas...Please...we deserve better than this. I am sorry to say I feel like I should get a refund.
Rating: Summary: Not at his best! Review: I couldn't wait to finally read another "law" book by Grisham. Well after reading this one, I guess the next wait won't seem as long! The character development is poor, you don't feel anything for the characters. The book is very drawn out, lacking any real excitement. I was also expecting a better ending, it was no surprize to me at all! Hopefully his next book isn't so quickly put together as this one seems.
