Rating: Summary: The Summons Review: John Grisham has written some great books. This isn't one of them. I am sure if I had a day to write a book I could come up with a product to rival this one. I keep saying it but this time I mean it. This is the last Grisham book I will buy.
Rating: Summary: John is starting to lose reality touch - still not bad Review: Sorry John - But running around with money in your car. Passing bucks at casinos and finding the one case where it happened. The end has its surprises, of course with John, but the middle is dull and unreal. I realize he has to write them quick but the main character doesn't act consistently most of the time. I know John expects us to understand he is shaken, but it isn't quite there. Still I listen and enjoy especially the reader. Mike Beck is the man. Ok but you may see it coming, partially. Keep going John I still love you. Jon
Rating: Summary: One of his best! Review: John is back to his 'old self'. This book was great. Has all the good stuff in it.......big money! and who gets it. I love when he writes these!
Rating: Summary: The ending left a lot to be desired Review: First let me say that I love John Grisham. He is one of my all-time favorites and I guess that is why I was so disappointed with this book. If it had been any other author, I would have just let it slide. The book had an incredible build up and left me wondering what was going to happen next. Once I got to the ending I found it very hard to believe. I will not elaborate because that would mean giving away key points of the book but I felt like it was just a big runaround.
Rating: Summary: A light summer read--don't buy it if you are expecting more Review: John Grisham sure has a good gig. He pumps out books once a year or so, according to a loosely-followed formula, and rakes in millions. Okay, so great literature it's not, but the formula works enough to keep his readers entertained. And really, that's all I am asking when I pick up one of his books. This book has a single, uncomplicated plot line. Professor Ray Atlee responds to his dying father's summons to return home to discuss his will. When Ray arrives, his father is dead and there are millions of unaccountable dollars stashed away in his house. Ray decides to hide the money away, not alerting his ne'er do well, substance-addicted brother Forrest as to its existence because he fears Forrest would blow all the money and kill himself in the process. However, someone knows about the money and begins tormenting Ray to get it back. The plot twists were entertaining, and I liked how the loose ends were neatly wrapped up in the end. One of the most interesting parts of the book for me was the description of small-town legal life. As a former small-town attorney myself, I could relate to the nepotism and gossip. You could easily read this book in an afternoon. If you're looking a quick mystery, you won't be sorry you did.
Rating: Summary: Grisham's Usual Review: I will NEVER buy another Grisham story. His style of writing is to take the same sentance and write it about five differant ways saying the same thing. Does he get paid by the page? I found this to be true with all his writings. Enough already!
Rating: Summary: Not Grisham At His Best Review: As an avid John Grisham reader I must admist I was dissappointed in The Summons. While it seems to have all the general elements of a Grisham law novel, the characters aren't as fully developed as I expected. The conclusion is also less than climactic. The books ends leaving the reader wondering - Is there one more chapter to read or should I wait for part two? Good for reading a day at the beach but not much content.
Rating: Summary: Weak Review: I have enjoyed every Grisham novel to date, but not this one. I could not get past the unnatural dialogue, fake-sounding names, and lack of character development. I found myself not caring if the main character lived or died. I have a hard time believing John Grisham actually wrote this book. If you have any kind of standards at all, don't waste your time with this one.
Rating: Summary: Very ordinary Review: I have read all the Grishams to date, but this was in my mind the most mediocre yet. Yes, it has a legal-related theme, but this book is simply not a page-turner, only becoming interesting in the last 30 pages. Although I have been buying all the Grishams in hard back and reading them all, I'll have to reconsider this with the next one.
Rating: Summary: A good quick read Review: I have read most of the Grisham books and would put this one in the top 5. I enjoyed it's simplicity of story. Ray strikes me as a character who might act like I would in that situation. No amazingly heroic deeds, no gun play etc...I read it in 2 afternoons and was surprised by the ending.
