Summary: MY NEW FAVORITE AUTHOR?
Review: Okay, maybe that's going a little far. But, WOW, what a great read. Patrick Kenzie is a cynic after my own heart, who actually has a heart(although he may hate to admit it!). And, boy, would I like to have Angie on my side during a war!

I'm on Amazon right at this minute for the sole purpose of ordering all of Lehane's other books. I can hardly wait for them to arrive!

Summary: This author has tapped into the soul of Boston
Review: This is the first readable author I have come across in years. Dennis Lehane writes about the gritty and grim side of Boston that is so real. Once I started the book I could not stop until I turned the last page. Dennis Lehane is a master of the dirty deal and the double-cross. Read this book.

Summary: Best 1st person voice since Mike Hammer or Archie Goodwin!
Review: This is a stunning novel. The characters are compelling, and the plotting is very well thought out. One might criticize, in this book and others a certain tendency to rely on deus ex machina in the form of indomitable supporting characters (prinicipally Bubba and the lawyer). But I don't really care, and this "flaw" is actually kind of fun.

The first person "voice" of the novel is reason enough for me to put Dennis Lehane on my very short list of authors whose work I will buy in hardcover as soon as I get my hands on it. The style is direct, intelligent, and witty; Dennis Lehane is absolutely efficient in his use of words yet his writing seems rich rather than threadbare. This, to me, is real writing. Like Rex Stout, he makes it look easy and seamless and makes you want to know the characters in real life. Like early Spillane, his writing is almost painfully direct, a great thing if you can pull it off. Highly recommended.

Summary: OK, so I'm biased. . .
Review: . . . because I live around Boston. But still, this is bar none some of the best detective fiction I've ever read. I was prompted to write after I just finished A Drink for the fifth or sixth time. Lehane's characters are gripping, his plots are interesting, and the issues they are forced to confront are never easy ones. Kenzie and Gennaro make a great team, and the chemistry between them is great, because it is, like the characters themselves, flawed by the world they live in. They are not "heroes" like Spenser, they don't always win in the way that heroes win. Boston should be proud to have produced an author as talented as Lehane, who gives us a taste of what Boston is really like, not the Robert Parker version, which though I enjoy, is not as stirring.

Summary: Great Read - and Laugh-out-loud one-liners.
Review: I really enjoyed this book, the mixture of sharp-edge and humor made it a winner. I can't wait to read his other books...

Summary: Lehane uses all the 1950's clichés of Private Eyes.
Review: It was boring from the start. Lehane uses all the 1950's clichés of Private Eyes. It was like reading a summary of the 1950 television TV shows. A PI who has a great looking secretary (he changed it to partner). The bad guys are obviously bad guys and the good guys are 'Gosh, we are fair, but powerful! (qoutes are mine). Everything in this was predictable. I gave it 2 stars because I laughed a couple of times.

Summary: Full of Suspense!
Review: This is the first novel I have read by Lehane, but it will definitely not be the last. I could not put this book down! The plot is great and so are the characters! One of the best mystery/suspene books that I have read in a long time and I would suggest it to anyone in the mood for a great novel that is full of suspense.

Summary: Excellent. Fantastic characters.
Review: Terrific dialogue, witty and well worth a very late night reading this story. Very sorry to see it end! I hope these characters return again and again.

Summary: Yawn.
Review: What's the hype about this book? It has a pretty thin plot, not especially interesting characters, and the writing style is fairly dull. If I weren't stuck on a transcontinental plane ride, I don't think I would have bothered to read it through.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Reminds me of early Mickey Spillane
Review: It is nice to see characters who have human failings and feelings along with their toughness and cynicism. Too many writers today fail to create believable heroes. Dennis Lehane is both believable and writes a helluva good story. It continues in his subsequent books. Read them all.
