Rating: Summary: Good Reading - But Ending Left Questions Review: I've been a Grisham fan since the beginning. This one is good, but not his best. I had trouble getting behind any one character. Story line lacked suspense and the ending was definitely a disappoint. Try again John!
Rating: Summary: The only thing missing was a slide show Review: This could have been written by anyone, about anyone. It didn't need to be written by Grisham, and didn't need to be about a lawyer. If he has discovered religion and environmentalism, fine. Give a magazine interview and be done with it. This book made me feel like I was reading a grade-school "What I did on my summer vacation" essay. The reason his previous books were popular was because he illustrated the inner workings of law-making and justice that most of us don't have access to. Television shows like Law&Order, Murder One, and The Practice are further evidence of this trend. To a lesser extent, quirky shows like Ally McBeal and Picket Fences also served this purpose. On top of everything else, when the stories may not have been as compelling as they could have been, the characters were. Up to this point, Mr. Grisham's books followed this same path. This book however, contained none of those elements. Mr. Grisham should either get back to basics, or make a clean break and not pretend to be writing about the law or lawyers.
Rating: Summary: dis-a-POINT-ed!!!! Review: Read all the others & enjoyed. This one did not have much suspense and very little of the legal details and thrills of his previous books. Characters were interesting, but then he didn't do much with them--the relationship between Nate and Rachel was so shortlived and flimsy that the rest that followed just wasn't believable. Early in the book, so much emphasis was placed on Troy's genius and his desire to outwit his despised relatives (even from the grave), that throughout the entire book I kept waiting for some surprise to be revealed in relation to the will/testament, for Troy to somehow win/outsmart them all. Not much substance, though as always, well written. I'm sure he'll get millions for the movie rights, but I sure won't be shelling out for a ticket to this one
Rating: Summary: A Totally New but Explosive Grisham Tale Review: This is coming from a major Grisham fan. I have read and own all of Grishams works in hardback. I was extremely intrigued by this book. It is totally different than his past works. I enjoyed traveling in Brazil with Nate O'Reilly and enduring Nate's problem with alcohol. But that is what I love about a good book is the twists it takes you through till the end. I always look forward to another Grisham book and can't wait until his next one!!!
Rating: Summary: A very good book Review: I really enjoyed this book because one of the main characters really changed his life around in a matter of a few weeks. This book was really hard to put down; suspense and the words "what will happen next?" seemed to run through my mind the most often. If you want a good read and you really don't want a horror or romance story then this book is for you. Although not one of John's greatest books, it is a good addition to all of those books that are lined, or shall I say: shoved in, those bookcases of yours!!!
Rating: Summary: HIS BEST YET! Review: The story is so different from his other works, I couldn't put it down! His descriptions of Brazil, the wildlife were accurate. The feeling and emotions of Nate, Troy and Rachel and the circumstances of how they were brought together was masterful. I thoroughly enjoyed this effort by John Grisham and recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Excellent - engaging - enthralling Review: I'm a Grisham fanatic - but can be unbiased. I really enjoyed this book. Hated to get out of the car! Took longer routes to destinations to keep listening. His characters are believable, well chronicled. His depiction of South America gripping. The soul-searching 'what is my life all about' Nate O'Reilly was not only touching but very realistic. Very truthful indeed. Another great example of his talents.
Rating: Summary: More the old Grisham, but where is he finding these lawyers? Review: I've read every thing he's written over the last ten years. He clearly knows how to spin a tale. However, the last two have been on the subject of a lawyer finding "truth" and giving up everything in pursuit of that truth. Where are these lawyers?
Rating: Summary: Boring...Boring...Boring Review: I am finally giving up Grisham for good. His first few books were great, fast-paced adventures and after that Grisham wrote books for the money. The only reason that I bought The Testament was because of the great review in USA Today. I was hoping to find the Grisham adventures that I once loved. Wrong! This book was the best sleeping pill since college Geography. If you feel you must read this book to see for yourself -- go to the library or wait for the paperback and save yourself some money.
Rating: Summary: The best yet! Review: This is by far the best book John has written. The sub-plots keep you just as interested as the main plot.
